Hernandez vs. Ross results & photos from Germany

Hernandez wins close decision over Ross to retain cruiser title
In boxing, close decisions often call for a rematch. Such could be the case following the fight between IBF Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez and Troy Ross, who clashed in front of 3,000 fans at the Stechert Arena in Bamberg, Germany on Saturday night. After 12 exciting rounds, Hernandez was ahead 114-113, 115-112 and 116-112 on the scorecards. Manager Wilfried Sauerland believes a rematch is possible.

“That was a very interesting and exciting fight and a lucky win for Pablo,” said the 72-year-old, who was on business in South Africa and therefore watched the fight on TV.
“A draw would have been more just. Ross, as the challenger, should have done more to win. He relied too much on countering. Pablo did not seem to be concentrated enough and he was not a...

Hernandez retains cruiserweight belt

Cuba's Yoan Pablo Hernandez successfully defended his IBF cruiserweight title, unanimously outpointing Canada's Troy Ross on Saturday night.

Hernandez received winning scores of 114-113, 115-112, 116-112 from the judges, drawing derisive whistles from the crowd.

Apart from the opening round, which Hernandez dominated, Ross appeared livelier throughout and clearly thought he had done enough to win.

''I pretty much pumped the floor with him today,'' Ross said. ''I know I won the fight because I put all my hard work into it. I'm too strong, too fast. I'm just a better boxer today ... it's a bad decision.''

Hernandez was in serious trouble during an explosive third round and received an eight count in the fifth before referee David Fields allowed the Cuban to continue.

Ross himself was wobbling in the ninth, when Hernandez caught the 37-year-old with a heavy left blow but appeared too exhausted to finish him off after a flurry of punches.

Take a look at some fighter quotes, photos and other notes from the final Hernandez vs. Ross presser.
At today's press conference promoter Kalle Sauerland promised that the bout will be fought out at the highest level. "It's one of the best match-ups this weight division has to offer!"

IBF-mandatory challenger Troy Ross agreed, stating, "Yoan Pablo Hernandez has some great boxing abilities and a powerful punch. He seems like a nice person but my all-around game is just better than his is. Boxing is similar chess. And after I checkmate Hernandez I will be the new IBF World Cruiserweight Champion!"

Yoan Pablo Hernandez (26-1, 13 KOs) is aiming to defend his IBF Cuiserweight Title for the second time in a row. His next opponent is Canada's Troy Ross (25-2, 16 KOs) who he will take on at the Stechert Arena in Bamberg, Germany on September 15. Ross, who is the mandatory challenger, has been part of the professional boxing scene for eleven years and fought in five different countries.
The IBF Title contender flew into Germany on September 1 and trying to get used to the six hours time difference between Germany and his hometown Toronto, Canada. Before the fight he took some time out for an Interview.

Yoan Pablo Hernandez (26-1, 13 KOs) cannot wait to compete again with the world's strongest cruiserweights. After suffering a hand injury during his last title defense, he returns to the squared circle on September 15 at Stechert Arena in Bamberg, Germany. His opponent of the night will be Troy Ross (25-2, 16 KOs). His mandatory challenger will spare no effort in order to bring the title to Canada. In this interview, Hernandez discloses his thoughts on his upcoming fight against Ross.
On September 15 you will be stepping back into the ring. Why did you have such a long break between fights?

Yoan Pablo Hernandez: Unfortunately, I suffered a metacarpal fracture on my left hand when I fought Steve Cunningham on February 4. After surgery, it took quite some time for it to heal. Then it took some extra time before I was able to get back into training due to the healing process. After that I had to make up for the lost time but now and I am ready to fight aga...

Hernandez ready for Ross; IBF Champion looking forward to Bamberg
Yoan Pablo Hernandez (26-1, 13 KOs) returns to the ring on September 15. The IBF Cruiserweight Champion will have to deal with Troy Ross (25-2, 16 KOs) from Canada. The excitement of Coach Ulli Wegner´s prodigy is huge. During his last title defense on February 4 at the Fraport Arena in Frankfurt (Main), Germany, the champion broke his left hand. “In round four I knocked down Cunningham on two occasions. That’s when it happened.”
Consequently the 27-year-old had to undergo surgery to repair the damage. Now the injury has healed up and he is finally able to get back into the ring. “It is all good now. I have regained full use of my left hand. I am really eager to get back inside the ring,” said Hernandez at Tuesdays press conference at the Konzert- und Kongresshalle Bamberg.

Second title bout in Bamberg: Britsch faces Santos in EU Championship rematch
IBF Cruiserweight World Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (26-1, 13 KOs) will defend his title against Troy Ross (25-2, 16 KOs) at the Stechert Arena of Bamberg, Germany on September 15. But there will be a second title bout in Upper Franconia. Middleweight Dominik Britsch (26-0-1, 9 KOs), currently ranked at number three by the IBF, will step into the ring in Bamberg. The 24-year-old will once again take on Roberto Santos (17-6-2, 9 KOs) from Spain to fight it out for the EU Championship. Their first meeting on February 25 in Stuttgart, Germany ended in a draw. The title stayed vacant. Now the rematch will prove who, out of the two of them, is the better fighter.

Yoan Pablo Hernandez (26-1, 13 KOs) will take on the challenge of his mandatory defense. The 27-year-old IBF Cruiserweight World Champion will face Troy Ross (25-2, 16 KOs) on September 15 at the Stechert Arena in Bamberg, Germany.
Hernandez won the interim WBA title back in February of last year in Muelheim (Ruhr) against Steve Herelius from France. He really shot to fame on October 1, 2011. In Neubrandenburg he dethroned the then IBF World Champion Steve Cunningham by a technical decision. The rematch against the American took place in Frankfurt (Main) in February. Hernandez sent Cunningham crashing to the floor twice during round four. But the former champion refused to give up and fought his way back into the fight. After twelve rounds the judges saw Hernandez in front of Cunningham and scored the bout with 116:110, 116:110 and 115:111 in favor of the Cuban. As a reward he did not only regain the IBF-Belt but was also awarded the belt of "The Ring" magazine.

Hernandez beats Cunningham in rematch

Yoan Pablo Hernandez of Cuba successfully defended his IBF cruiserweight title with a unanimous decision against Steve Cunningham in their rematch on Saturday.

The southpaw had Cunningham on the canvas in the fourth round but the American recovered to finish the bout. The judges awarded it 116-110, 116-110 and 115-111.

Hernandez was making his first defense of the title he won from Cunningham on a controversial split technical decision in October.

That bout was stopped after six rounds after Hernandez sustained two cuts from a clash of heads, and awarded to the Cuban on points.

Hernandez, based in Germany since 2005, improved his record to 26-1 (13 KOs), while Cunningham dropped to 24-4 (12 KOs).

Right here, you'll get a quick Q&A interview with the 27-year-old Cuban champ, as he discusses the way the first fight went down, facing USS Cunningham for a second time, and much more.
Official Wrap-Up & Photos from Germany: Cunningham-Hernandez, Sylvester-Proksa

Ulli Wegner believes that Yoan Pablo Hernandez's (25-1, 13 KOs) victory over IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham (24-3, 12 KOs) should have been a first round KO rather than a sixth-round technical decision. The hard-hitting Cuban knocked down his American opponent in the first round with a huge left hook.
“The referee saved Cunningham from a flash KO,” Wegner said of the count that lasted at least 14 seconds. “He gave Cunningham too much time to recover. And then his corner extended the recovery time between the first and the second round by staying in the ring after the bell sounded to start the second round. That helped Cunningham to get back into the fight. But nevertheless I am proud of Hernandez. He fought a great fight and he was clearly leading on points when the fight was stopped later.”
After the exciting opening round, Hernandez remained in control....
