Zou Shiming to fight 6-round bout in Macao July 27

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming will return to Macao on Saturday, July 27, to fight in his second professional bout where he will headline a card featuring two accompanying world championship fights.

Shiming's bout will be scheduled for six rounds, an increase from his recent four-round professional debut, and perhaps an indication that his handlers are looking to accelerate his development in order to get him in more high-profile fights.

"I was very pleased with how quickly Shiming learned what I was teaching during our first training camp and he is the hardest worker in the gym," said Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach. "This time our main focus will be on getting him to punch harder. Shiming will need to learn how to sit down on his punches to maximize their power. I cannot wait to start working with him again."

Zou (1-0), from Guizhou, China, won his April 6 debut via a dominant four-round unanimous decision over gritty Eleazar Valenzu...

Chapter two of the Zou Shiming era will begin when the two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time Amateur World Champion returns to the ring and headlines an exciting card featuring two world championship fights – WBO/WBA flyweight champion Juan Estrada vs. Milan Melindo and IBF featherweight champion Evgeny Gradovich vs. Mauricio Muñoz – Saturday, July 27, at The Venetian® Macao’s CotaiArena™.
"The exciting matches taking place at The Venetian Macao’s CotaiArena on July 27 highlight the fact that boxing is a major global sport," said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.
“Deciding to host Zou Shiming’s professional debut in April was a great move – for Sands China and for Macao,” said Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sands China Ltd. “We hosted a very successful event, and we remain committed to bringing the world’s best entertainment to Macao, helping to increase the diversity of attractions available.
Macau results & photos: Roman Martinez wins, Brian Viloria upset, Shiming Zou debuts successfully

The Fists of Gold card in Macau was reportedly seen by up to 200 million people in China. Here in the United States, fight fans could have checked out the card live on Saturday afternoon on HBO2. But if you missed it, then you can check out our recap of the event right here, including all three televised fights -- Roman Martinez defended his title, Brian Viloria suffered another let down, and Shiming Zou made a successful debut to the crowd's and his country's delight.

In the first televised fight of the evening, Roman Martinez took home a split decision over Diego Magdaleno. Magdaleno oddly received one widely divergent card in his favor - 116-111 - while Martinez took the others, 115-112 and 114-113.
It was a close bout, but Martinez seemed to do enough to earn the decision, punctuated by a 4th round knockdown on a stiff right hand. Magdaleno was a tough challenger, and displayed solid boxing skills, however he didn't have enough pop to do any damage or deter Mart...

Brian Viloria Upset By Juan Francisco Estrada, Zou Shiming Wins Pro Debut On Historic China Show

(Zou Shiming; photo credit: Chris Farina, Top Rank)

What might have been the biggest viewing audience for a live boxing match in human history got itself a good show Saturday, then it watched a win for its national hero.

From the standpoint of action in the ring, the most significant outcome on the Macau, China card that aired Saturday on HBO2 was flyweight Brian Viloria dropping a decision to hungry young Juan Francisco Estrada. It was a fan-friendly slugfest with an upset winner, given how Viloria has climbed into consensus pound-for-pound top-10 status in the past couple years.

The "event" was significant in a whole other way: As with most pro debuts, Chinese Olympian gold medalist Zou Shiming's pro debut had only ceremonial importance and was non-competitive. But that event was pure Top Rank genius. For years, Top Rank's Bob Arum has talked of bringing a card to Macau so frequently that it became a running joke, not because the idea was unsound but ...

China's Zou wins decision in pro boxing debut

Zou Shiming won a unanimous decision in his professional boxing debut, dominating all four rounds against Mexico's Eleazar Valenzuela in Macau on Saturday.

Zou's high-profile debut was the centerpiece of a show at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macau casino. The two-time Olympic gold medalist didn't disappoint the crowd, which waved flags and cheered for the most successful amateur boxer in Chinese history.

Zou won China's first Olympic boxing medal in 2004 and its first gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Games, adding a second gold last year in London. The 31-year-old flyweight then signed with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who teamed him with veteran trainer Freddie Roach.

Zou's pro debut was broadcast to nearly every home in China. He plans to fight for a world title within a year.

Zou isn't a product of the Western boxing world, but he's aiming to conquer it. The greatest amateur boxer in Chinese history is making his pro debut this weekend in Macau, and the 112-pound dynamo intends to fight for a world title in the next year.

Video: Zou Shiming gets his own theme song “Fists of Gold”

The Venetian® Macao-Resort-Hotel is pulling out all stops for world championship boxing's first-ever appearance in Macau by producing a special theme song and music video for Zou Shiming. Performed by Stephanie Cheng (郑融), The "Fists of Gold" Theme Song Music Video ("皇金拳賽"主題曲MV) made its world premiere today and already it's climbing up the charts from Beijing to Bar Harbor!
"Fists of Gold" Zou Shiming Theme Song & Music Video

I have no clue what the song is saying, so all things considering, it's pretty catchy. It's an appropriate name too, with Shiming's double Olympic gold medals, and multiple world amateur gold medals.
Although, it's actually for the entire event in Macau, also featuring Brian Viloria making a title defense, and a title fight between Rocky Martinez and Diego Magdaleno, and not solely for Zou Shiming.

China's Zou wins 2nd straight Olympic boxing gold

Light flyweight Zou Shiming of China won his second straight Olympic boxing gold medal on Saturday night, beating Thailand's Kaeo Pongprayoon 13-10.

Zou defended his gold medal from Beijing, the first light flyweight to accomplish the feat. He is a three-time Olympic medalist, also winning a bronze in Athens eight years ago.

Zou is the only boxing gold medalist in China's history.

Pongprayoon vehemently protested the result, flopping to the canvas in pain and anger. The Thai boxer was hit with a two-point penalty for an unclear offense with 9 seconds left in the bout, increasing Zou's margin of victory.
