No single person did more to build America’s high-performance reputation from the 1960s through the 21st century than Carroll Shelby, whose 50 years of super-fast vehicles will be celebrated with a display of three dozen automobiles during the Sept. 20-23 Food Lion AutoFair at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
To celebrate the many achievements of the automotive icon, who passed away May 10 of this year at the age of 89, a display will pay tribute to the special Cobras, Mustangs, Dodges and other cars he created or developed.

Reed Sorenson and Biagi-DenBeste Racing will unite two of American motorsports' most revered icons - Carroll Shelby and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - this weekend when the No. 98 Carroll Shelby Engine Company Ford Mustang makes its third start of the 2012 racing season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. This weekend marks the first occasion that the Nationwide Series competes at the heralded speedway, known worldwide as "The Brickyard." Although it will be the initial start at the 2.5-mile track for Biagi-DenBeste Racing, its driver is not lacking in experience. Sorenson captured a pole for the 2007 Brickyard 400, one of the premier events each year for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Sorenson earned a fifth-place finish that year and also has finishes of 13th and 17th in 2009 and 2008, respectively. "Every racecar driver wants to go to Indianapolis and compete for a win," said Sorenson. "I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to go this weekend with o...

Shelby's family in burial dispute

Celebrated auto designer and race car driver Carroll Shelby's family is fighting over custody of his body more than a month after his death.

Shelby died May 10 in a Dallas hospital. But his body remains in a Dallas County morgue as his wife and children fight in court about burial plans.

Shelby's children say in court documents filed in Texas that the 89-year-old Shelby gave his son Michael authority shortly before his death to have his remains cremated.

But Shelby's wife counters the document was forged. Cleo Shelby, who lives in California, says in a court filing that Shelby gave her power of attorney two years ago.

Another of Carroll Shelby's sons, Patrick, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he expects the dispute to take weeks to be resolved.

Auto designer Carroll Shelby was a chili king, too

Many thousands of words have been written since auto designer Carroll Shelby's recent death at the age of 89. Most of them documented his championship driving days, the Shelby Cobra he designed, his innovative run through the auto industry, his fundraising endeavors and his determination to keep going strong even after a heart transplant more than 20 years ago.

But to me, there was something missing from the resume. In a word, chili. I'll bet chili heads (as we like to be called) around the world have raised a bowl of red in his memory.

Many of them probably are asking: He built cars, too?

Ever walk through your grocer and notice a nifty-looking brown paper bag with the words: ''Carroll Shelby's Original Texas Brand Chili Kit?'' That's Shelby. And by the way, the kit is still around more than 50 years after it first showed up.

Shelby, simply put, was the Chili King.

This is the man who founded the International Chili Society in the 1960s, and the hundreds of competitions h

R.I.P. Carroll Shelby 1923-2012

(AP) Decades after a heart condition forced him to retire from racing, Carroll Shelby still loved to drive muscle cars. Well into his 80s, the legendary car designer spent hours testing his last Mustang Shelby GT500, which sets a new record for horsepower and hits a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour.(New York Daily News)A one-time chicken farmer, Shelby had more than a half-dozen successful careers during his long life: champion race car driver, racing team owner, automotive consultant and safari tour operator. His fabled Shelby Cobra sports car became an automotive and cultural icon, and he was later credited with injecting testosterone into Ford's Mustang and Chrysler's Viper. When Shelby died Thursday night in a Dallas hospital, he also was one of the nation's longest-living heart transplant recipients, having received a heart on June 7, 1990, from a 34-year-old man who died of an aneurysm.
Carroll Shelby, the legendary auto racer and car designer who built the fabled Shelby Cobra sports car and injected testosterone into Ford's Mustang and Chrysler's Viper, has died. He was 89.

Shelby's company, Carroll Shelby International, said Friday that Shelby died a day earlier at a Dallas hospital. He had received a heart transplant in 1990 and a kidney transplant in 1996.

He was one of the nation's longest-living heart transplant recipients, having received a heart on June 7, 1990, from a 34-year-old man who died of an aneurism. Shelby also received a kidney transplant in 1996 from his son, Michael.

The 1992 inductee into the Automobile Hall of Fame had homes in Los Angeles and his native east Texas.

The one-time chicken farmer had more than a half-dozen successful careers during his long life. Among them: champion race car driver, racing team owner, automobile manufacturer, automotive consultant, safari tour operator, raconteur, chili entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Ford Gets Le Mans Trophy Back 45 Years Later

All the way back in 1967 the Shelby-Ford racing team won its second (of ultimately four-straight) championship at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race. I too was shocked to learn that they had cars all the way back in such ancient historical times. The 1967 team stands out from the other Shelby-Ford winners because it was (and remains) the only all-American team to ever win the grueling endurance race, being driven by Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt, and with Carroll Shelby setting the car up himself.Following Ford's decision to pull out of Le Mans in 1970, the winning 1967 trophy remained with a private individual until now when it was been returned to Ford via Edsel Ford II (left) who sits on the car company's board. (On a side note, after his name became synonymous with one of the biggest disasters in auto making history—ahead even of this one—how in good conscience did Edsel Ford I give his SON the same name? That's some messed up parenting.)The trophy will join the Ford ...

Missing Ford Racing Trophy Won By A.J. Foyt Returned After 45-Years

DEARBORN, Mich. Feb. 9, 2012. – A trophy from one of Ford Motor Company’s greatest racing triumphs has just returned home in time to help celebrate the 45th anniversary of Ford Racing's 1967 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The victory that day was piloted by the All-American team of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt in a car prepared by Carroll Shelby and his Shelby-American race team. The trophy was recently returned to Edsel B. Ford II, a Ford Motor Company board member.
“It is a very important milestone for Ford to have this great and historic trophy returned to the Company,” said Ford. “The win in the No. 1 Ford Mark IV with Gurney and Foyt was memorable in so many ways and proved beyond doubt that our dominant victory at Le Mans in 1966 was not a one-time occurrence.”
The 1967 victory still remains the only time an American car, prepared by an American team with American drivers, has ever won the world’s greatest endurance sports car race. The Ford team took the lead 90 min...
