Vettel goes from fan favorite to villain

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By MICHAEL CASEY AP Sports Writer As Sebastian Vettel has established himself as the most dominant Formula One driver of his generation, racing fans have come to see him as the boyish, fun-loving face of the glamorous sport.

But after his victory in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday, a more complex image of the German has emerged - that of a ruthless, cunning driver who will do whatever it takes to win a race and possibly his fourth consecutive drivers' championship.

The 25-year-old German ignored team orders and overtook Red Bull teammate Mark Webber for the victory with just 10 laps remaining. The move left Webber fuming and raised questions about who is truly in charge at Red Bull.

''I think it blemished his reputation,'' three-time Formula One champion Jackie Stewart said.

''It was an unfortunate error of judgment by Sebastian and it will linger for some time,'' Stewart told The Associated Press. ''There will be an awareness from now

Watkins Glen International Adds Color to Chamber of Commerce

Stephen Oosterling answered The Glen’s call for a local artist late in 2012 to create a mural spanning a 10’ x 17’ wall and signify over 65 years of sports car racing history at Watkins Glen International. The Williamson, NY-based motorsports artist exceeded expectations with the final piece displayed at the Watkins Glen Chamber of Commerce on Franklin Street.
“Guests of Watkins Glen need to stop into the Chamber and see this outstanding piece of work,” Michael Printup, Watkins Glen International President expressed. “It is great to work with Steve on such a significant project and see the final product.”
Printup’s only request was to ensure the final piece represented everything that has raced at The Glen.
Oosterling did that, selecting five cars that embody the storied racing history of Watkins Glen International. The No. 99 Toyota Eagle MKIII IMSA GTP driven by Juan Manuel Fangio II, the No. 6 Elf Tyrrell 006 Cosworth Ford piloted by Francois Cevert, the No. 9 Target Dallara/Hond...

F1 title battle down to final race

On to Brazil.

Formula One takes its championship duel between Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso to the season-ending race in Sao Paolo this week after those two finished second and third Sunday at the U.S. Grand Prix won by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel could have wrapped up his third consecutive championship with a win and a poor performance by Alonso, but the German hasn't clinched anything yet. By finishing second, Vettel at least picked up three points on Alonso and now leads by 13 heading to South America with a chance to make history and do a little samba if he does.

If the 25-year-old Vettel wins another world championship, he'll join Michael Schumacher and Juan Manuel Fangio as the only drivers to win three in a row.

After Sunday's race, Vettel sounded comfortable with the lead and his chances of winning again.

''We've been very quick in Brazil the last couple of years, so plenty to look forward to,'' said Vettel, who won in B

Vettel returns to the desert with bigger F1 lead

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel is aiming to build on his late-season resurgence and extend his lead in the Formula One standings when he heads back to the desert for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend.

Abu Dhabi holds fond memories for Vettel, who clinched his first title there with a victory in 2010.

While he won't be lifting the drivers' trophy at the Yas Marina track this year, the two-time defending champion is the favorite for a third straight drivers' title after his victory Sunday at the Indian Grand Prix.

The Indian GP was the German driver's fourth straight win - completing a clean sweep of F1's Asian swing - and gave him a 13-point lead over championship rival Fernando Alonso of Ferrari with three races to go.

Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus is 67 points back in the standings in third spot, while Vettel's teammate, Mark Webber, is another six points back.

After his win last weekend, Vettel was careful to play down his chances of clinching the season title and joining greats

F1 leader Vettel wins Indian GP pole

Formula One championship leader Sebastian Vettel took pole position for the Indian Grand Prix on Saturday, edging out teammate Mark Webber by 0.04 seconds for Red Bull's third straight front-row sweep.

McLaren pair Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button qualified third and fourth at Buddh International Circuit, ahead of the Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. Alonso trails Vettel by six points in the drivers' championship.

Vettel is primed for a fourth consecutive win as he chases a third straight F1 title; something only previously achieved by Juan Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher. Vettel also completed the double of pole and race victory in last year's inaugural Indian GP.

''Fortunately, I got the lap together. I was very happy with the lap,'' Vettel said. ''It's been a great weekend so far, no problem with the car.''

Pole position, coupled with his recent dominant form, suggests Vettel will be very hard to stop in Sunday's race - but he did ad

Vettel takes points lead with GP win

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Korean Grand Prix on Sunday to move ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in the Formula One championship standings by six points with four races remaining.

Vettel started second on the grid behind Mark Webber but overtook his teammate on the first turn and never relinquished the lead, finishing 8.2 seconds ahead of Webber. Alonso was third, 13.9 seconds off the pace.

"The foundation was there with a good start," Vettel said. "I wasn't sure because I was starting on the dirty side of the grid but I was able to get some good grip and get inside at the first turn."

Vettel, who also won the previous races in Singapore and Japan, is moving within sight of a third straight championship title -- something only previously achieved by Juan-Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher.

Webber claimed his first second-place finish of the season but the Australian was disappointed with his start from pole.

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix from the pole on Sunday to close within four points of Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso, who crashed out of the race at the first turn.

Vettel, who also won the last race in Singapore, is now within sight of a third straight title - something only previously accomplished by Juan-Manuel Fangio and Michael Schumacher - with five races left.

''It was an important step today,'' Vettel said. ''There is still a long way to go. I don't know what happened behind me today but Alonso was very unlucky. We never know what is going to happen in the next race so it was important to take points today.''

Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa was second, 20.6 seconds behind Vettel for his first podium finish since Korea in 2010, a performance that should boost his chances of staying with the team.

Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi delighted the home fans by taking third place - holding off a late challenge from

The definitive list, not just who is in the fastest car, but the most influential, history-altering driver that has ever graced the most demanding of sports. Since Formula One's opening season in 1950 to the present decade an incredible array of talent has appeared, shone and even died in the hands of an F1 car. Sadly, since it is impossible to race Jeson Button against Schumacher (when he was good) or Senna againt Hamilton, this list is the best chance we have to ecide once and for all.
