Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Revenue Sharing, Bullington, Halladay, Mauer

On this date 18 years ago, Eddie Murray signed a two-year, $7.5MM deal with the Mets, the third of six teams he would play for in 21 seasons. In those two years, he would hit 43 home runs and post seasons of 115 and 111 OPS+. A week into this year's free agency, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere...

Jeff Salazar, Bryan Bullington Become Free Agents

Since we're at the point in the year where there's nothing to care about except little things, here's some news: a bunch of guys just became minor league free agents. The only Pirate on the list is Jeff Salazar, who went 1-for-23 for the Bucs this year. Salazar probably needed to hit better this season to have much of a shot at a real major-league career, which is too bad; he has an .826 career minor league OPS (albeit in some pretty hospitable hitting environments, like ...

Friday Night Failings

The Jays' affiliates had more rain-outs (2) than wins (1) on the night. Enough said.
Tacoma 8 Las Vegas 7Davis Romero received the start and was not overly sharp. He allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk over 5.1 innings of work. Bryan Bullington relieved him and allowed one run in 1.2 innings, but struck out four. Bill Murphy had a scoreless inning and struck out the side. Brian Wolfe, though, took the loss when he allowed three runs on two hits and two walks without getting ...

Wins... We Have Some Wins!

Everyone won (seriously, the affiliates actually had a collectively-solid night) except the young kids in the Gulf Coast League... and they lost in extra innings.
Las Vegas 4 Tacoma 1Marc Rzepczynski was in fine form during his triple-A debut. The left-hander allowed just two hits and three walks in 5.2 innings, while striking out nine batters. Bryan Bullington worked 1.1 scoreless innings, and Brian Wolfe worked a scoreless inning. Jonah Bayliss gave up Tacoma's only run in two-thirds of...

Will Stephen Strasburg be the next Bryan Bullington?

Stephen Strasburg, the first pick in yesterday's MLB Draft, and Bryan Bullington have four things in common:1. They are No. 1 overall picks2. They are pitchers3. They played collegiate ball for non-powerhouse schools (San Diego State and Ball State, respectively)4. They have bad baseball names. Stephen Strasburg sounds like an investment banker, Bryan Bullington is in pharmaceutical sales.Other than that, Strasburg hopes his career in no way parallels that of Bullington's, the top pic...

MLB No. 1 draft picks: Where are they now?

The Mariners logged their 100th loss last night. With four games remaining on the 2008 schedule, they have a shot at being tied with the 1978 Mariners for worst team in franchise history. Of course, we saw this coming as early as June. The comparison to the '78 club was striking even then.

So, were does this leave us? The M's aren't getting a trophy for their ineptness. But they could have the No. 1 draft pick if they finish with the worst record in the league. Only the Washing...

Awwwwwwwwwwww Don't Lose

Its sort of demoralizing to watch the Red Sox party at your expense two years in a row on their home field.

Grrrrrrrr

Then to have the comeback we did tonight only to be squandered by our best relief pitcher.

Crapppppy.....

Bullington was nails, that was pretty awesome to see, but I still can't see him lasting till next year.

Fausto's year ends with a bit of a rough patch, but he'll be back.. Healthy, feeling good and well rested.. No doubt Fausto is primed for a better year in 2009.

How about Josh Barfield these past few games? Huh huh whaddayasaytothat?! What did I say about that.. Shame it took a Marte injury and a Cabrera suspension for him to get some time.

Pronk roped a double tonight, he's not back fully but he no longer looks attrocious at the plate. Timing will come with regular start time, which he will get next year.

Kinda keeping it short but felt like I needed to post tonight. I was kinda peeved at Josh Beckett's comments about Ryan Garko.. Garko said enough, he was spot on with everything.. Beckett just was looking for someone to blame if you ask me.. Like Garko said, about half his team wears the same type of pads.

Anyway, wanted to pass along this link for all you minor league nuts, no pun intended.

The team is the South Georgia Peanuts and their collective goal is to get back into the MLB affiliated Minor Leagues. They are managed by Wally Backman and you can watch a documentary on their season here. John Fitzgerald, the man behind this project, this was kind enough to e-mail me about it and I think its definitely worth a look-see if your looking for something to to do. Check it out!

Anyway... Let's salvage this four game series with a tie, pleaase? I don't wanna finish the year below .500.. 80 wins would be nice, ya know? It looks a lot better than something in the 70's.

Kwame Brown Strikes Again

I would like to congratulate Kwame Brown for stealing money from yet another NBA franchise. This time his theft hits close to home because he signed with my home town Detroit Pistons. Kwame's insertion into the lineup will most likely signal the end of Amir Johnson's, Jason Maxiell's or maybe even Rasheed Wallace's stay in Detroit, but I really don't care about that. I am much more interested in figuring out whether Kwame is the worst #1 pick of all time. Let's do this scientifically and break it down by sport. We will only look at picks since 1980 to keep it semi-relevant for us 20 somethings. Here goes:

Basketball:

Kwame Brown - 2001 - Washington Wizards - The Pistons will be Kwame's fourth team in eight seasons. Apparently seven points and six rebounds from a #1 isn't enough to satisfy most teams.

The image "http://theassociation.blogs.com/the_association/images/2007/10/04/fullj.jpg" cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Michael Olowokandi - 1998 - LA Clippers - Despite a song by a similar name, it turns out, "The candy man cannot." Who would have thought that a guy who played against stiff Big West competition would struggle when faced with NBA bigs?

http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/michael_olowokandi.jpg

Pervis Ellison - 1989 - Sacramento - "Never Nervous," wasn't as bad as the above number #1's and most of the problems that he did have stemmed from injuries rather than lack of heart/lack of a lack of weed.

http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/1388220.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1939057D9939C83F106F1C1BD2896DA028B5A5397277B4DC33E

Football:

Tim Couch - Cleveland Browns - He didn't revive the Cleveland franchise like many hoped he would. However, he did drive it into the ground like many Steelers fans had hoped.

http://www.tireball.com/photos/albums/football-photos/couch_tim-01.jpg

David Carr - Houston Texans - 2002 - He was just the kind of QB that Houston needed to start their franchise with several losing seasons.

n

Courtney Brown - Cleveland Browns - 2000- This is the kind of dominant edge pash rusher that Carmen Policy and friends were looking for with the first pick. There is still time for him to realize his talent. He has been out of football for the last two years and I have to imagine that time has been spent doing nothing other than lifting weights.

http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/1486028.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1939057D9939C83F106140BBBAEFA4DD0915A5397277B4DC33E

Ki-Jana Carter - Cincinnati - 1995 - At least this Cincinnati draft pick isn't getting into fights, or driving drunk, or giving beer to 17 year olds. Instead, he chose to live a quiet life and just be awful on the football field.

http://bengals.enquirer.com/img/photos/1997/09/090197carter_371x450.jpg

Steve Emtman - Indianapolis - 1992 - I remember having nightmares about this guy dry humping my Michigan QBs up and down the field in the Rose Bowl. I'll take a lot of the blame off Steve for his lack of NFL success and place it firmly on the myriad injuries he suffered in his short career.

http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/355229.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF193B3EA2C03450C94860F20FE504FBC27E9284831B75F48EF45

Aundray Bruce - Atlanta - 1988 - You can't blame this guy's lack of success on injuries. Instead let's place the blame on a potential love affair with Steve Broussard.

http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/227923.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=17A4AD9FDB9CF1934A2752006EF5F0ED7BAF4E5217CB55CD284831B75F48EF45

Baseball

Matt Anderson - Detroit Tigers - 1997 -After sucking mightly at the Major League level, Matt did what any man who just wanted to give up might do, he blew out his arm in a octupus tossing competition.

http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/images/2004/03/25/6BbaDLIP.jpg

Bryan Bullington - Pittsburgh Pirates - 2002 - The Pirates finally pulled the plug on Bullington, designating him for assignment on July 3rd. The Cleveland Indians quickly dove on the Bullington grenade and signed him off waivers. Good luck Eric Wedge.

Brien Taylor - NewYork Yankees - 1991 -Yankees fans know Brien as a one of two #1 picks overall to never reach the major leagues. Brien, only Steve Chilcott feels your pain.

Hockey

Patrick Stefan - Atlanta - 1999 - Stefan was supposed to be the face of the new Thrashers franchise
