Rosberg takes pole for Spanish GP

Mercedes will start the Spanish Grand Prix from the front row after Nico Rosberg had the fastest qualifying time ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton on Saturday.

While Hamilton had the fastest times in the first two qualifying sessions, Rosberg edged him to win the pole position in 1 minute, 20.718 seconds.

Three-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel will start from third spot for Red Bull ahead of Kimi Raikkonen's Lotus.

Ferrari has yet to secure a pole position this season, and it proved to be another frustrating afternoon. After good practice times, Fernando Alonso will start fifth and Felipe Massa sixth.

Jenson Button failed to make the cut for the third session and the Briton starts in 14th place.

Hamilton takes Chinese GP pole

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for Formula One's Chinese Grand Prix.

Hamilton's best time Saturday at the Shanghai International Circuit was 1 minute, 34.484 seconds, qualifying a quarter of a second ahead of Lotus' Kimi Raikkonen. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso will start third in Sunday's race.

''It's an incredible feeling, so happy to have our first pole for some time,'' Hamilton said. ''I'm just ecstatic really, the lap was great.''

''I can't answer (critics) with one result but bit by bit, as we progress and improve, they will have to stand corrected. I am so grateful because it could have gone the other way. It was such a big choice for me and a big step for me but I made the right call.''

A cat-and-mouse qualifying session allowed all drivers to restrict their time on the track to preserve their tires for the race, with all of the top 10 having only one flying lap in the final stage of qualifying.

Hamilton fastest in F1 testing

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton clocked the fastest lap of the preseason in Formula One testing on Saturday.

Hamilton took advantage of the first blue skies and dry track this week at the Catalunya Circuit by putting in a lap of 1 minute, 20.558 seconds to record the session's best individual time.

Felipe Massa had the second best effort in his Ferrari, seven-tenths slower than Hamilton, followed by Adrian Sutil in his return to Force India.

After one more day of final adjustments in northeastern Spain, the season opens at the Australian Grand Prix in two weeks.

Hamilton crashes at Jerez testing

Lewis Hamilton was reduced to a spectator and his Mercedes team cut short its Formula One preseason trials after a brakes failure sent him crashing into the barrier in Jerez on Wednesday.

Hamilton's debut drive under competitive conditions for his new team came to a jarring halt after he'd set the second fastest lap of the day. The rear brakes failed at 250 kph (170 mph) due to a hydraulic fault and his Silver Arrow went straight on at the Dry Sack hairpin, careered across the gravel trap and slammed nose-first into a tire barrier.

Hamilton, unhurt, climbed out unaided from the cockpit and walked away in oil-spattered overalls, but his car's nose and front wing were damaged. "The front brakes enabled him to slow the car but, he couldn't avoid the barrier," Mercedes tweeted.

It has not been a good start for the team, as Nico Rosberg endured a spectacular car failure with flames erupting from his car's rear on Tuesday. Rosberg has been unable to resume testing. After a few warm-

Hamilton: No regrets leaving McLaren for Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton says he is very happy about his decision to leave the McLaren team for Formula One rival Mercedes after this season.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh recently said he believes Hamilton rushed into his decision after the Sept. 23 Singapore Grand Prix and will regret the decision to end his 14-year relationship with the team. Mercedes has won one race in three seasons.

Hamilton said Thursday at the U.S. Grand Prix he was surprised by Whitmarsh's comments. Hamilton says it was an emotional decision to leave but one that he's very happy with. Hamilton says he's still giving 100 percent to the McLaren team in the final two races of the season.

Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, signed a three-year contract with Mercedes.

McLaren chief: Hamilton regrets Mercedes move

The head of McLaren believes Lewis Hamilton rushed into a decision to leave the team and regrets moving to Formula One rival Mercedes.

Hamilton will end his 14-year association with McLaren at the end of this season after signing a three-year contract with Mercedes, where he will look to add to his world title from 2008.

The Briton made his career choice days after retiring from the Singapore Grand Prix on Sept. 23 with gearbox failure. McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh says ''it is always bad to make a decision in the aftermath of a bad race.''

Whitmarsh says Friday on F1's website that ''I think he has on occasions'' regretted the move to Mercedes, which has won one race in three seasons.

McLaren signs Perez, Hamilton set for Mercedes

Formula One team McLaren has signed Mexican driver Sergio Perez for next season, part of a shakeup that is expected to see Lewis Hamilton move to Mercedes.

Hamilton's switch to Mercedes is expected to be announced later Friday. He would replace seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, who has also been linked to a move to Sauber to replace Perez.

Hamilton has been at McLaren throughout his F1 career but the team had been unwilling to match a lucrative offer from Mercedes, where he will team up with Nico Rosberg.

Perez signed a ''multi-year deal'' with McLaren after an impressive 2012 campaign that had initially sparked interest from Ferrari.

Hamilton is still unsigned for 2013

The contract negotiations between Formula One team McLaren and Lewis Hamilton won't dampen the English driver's quest to win the title, according to team principal Martin Whitmarsh.

There's been speculation that Hamilton may switch to Mercedes next season, and his future remains in limbo while he pushes for a more lucrative McLaren offer.

''I am sure he will want more money and I am sure we will want to pay less - that is how the business normally works,'' Whitmarsh said Friday.

The McLaren head said both driver and team will not be distracted by the contract dispute over the remainder of the 2012 season as he and the team challenge for Formula One titles.

''His is very, very focused on doing the job,'' Whitmarsh said. ''He realizes this year we have a strong opportunity to win a world championship and we all realize the right thing to do is focus.

Hamilton wins Hungarian Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, prolonging McLaren's dominance on the slow and winding Hungaroring circuit.

Hamilton completed Sunday's race in 1 hour, 41 minutes, 5.503 seconds - more than a second ahead of Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen. Romain Grosjean, also of Lotus, was third. It was McLaren's sixth win here in eight years.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, who finished fifth, leads the championship with 164 points, followed by the Red Bull duo of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton is fourth.

The race was cut to 69 laps from 70, after an extra positioning lap was added when Michael Schumacher's Mercedes stalled on the starting grid.

The Hungaroring race is the last event before a month-long summer break, resuming with the Belgian Grand Prix on Sept. 2.

Lewis Hamilton loses Spanish GP pole

Lewis Hamilton lost pole position over a rules breach on Saturday, giving Pastor Maldonado first place on the starting grid for what is shaping up to be another unpredictable Spanish Grand Prix.

Hamilton left it to his final flying lap to edge his Williams rival by more than half a second for what appeared to be his third pole of the season and McLaren's 150th overall.

But McLaren ordered the British driver to stop his car after crossing the line because of a technical glitch, with the team subsequently claiming their driver had insufficient fuel to return to the pits.

Governing body FIA ruled that ''as the amount of the fuel put into its car is under complete control of (McLaren) the stewards cannot accept this'' and Hamilton was ''excluded'' from qualifying results, allowed to start from last place instead.

''We told him to stop because we knew there was a problem,'' said team principal Martin Whitmarsh, who claimed earlier that Hamilton had had enough

Hamilton wins pole for Spanish GP

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton was fastest in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday, racing past Pastor Maldonado to deny the Venezuelan a first Formula One pole position.

Hamilton used his final lap to edge the Williams driver for his third pole position of the season. The Briton is seeking his first victory at Catalunya Circuit, which would ensure a fifth different winner this season for the first time since 1983.

Fernando Alonso of Ferrari starts third in front of his home fans, with Lotus pair Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen completing the top five.

Overall leader and defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel will start eighth after opting to save his tires and failing to set a qualifying time.

Hamilton eyes 1st victory of season in Bahrain

Lewis Hamilton's impressive speed in qualifying hasn't translated into victories this season, but the McLaren driver is confident heading into the Bahrain Grand Prix.

After opening the Formula One season with three straight third-place finishes, Hamilton leads the drivers' championship and has displayed a consistency that his top rivals have failed to match.

While the Briton may have been frustrated after failing to convert two pole positions into victories, he said ''finishing on the podium for the first three races has been fantastic for us.''

Bahrain organizers hope to host the race this weekend despite protests and political unrest in the area. The event was canceled last year.

Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund owns 50 percent of McLaren.

Hamilton confident despite penalty at Chinese GP

Lewis Hamilton is hoping his McLaren will be quick enough to compete for victory at the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend despite receiving a five-place grid penalty for needing to change his gearbox.

Hamilton showed that his car has plenty of pace by winning back-to-back poles at the Australian and Malaysian GPs to start the Formula One season. However, the highest he can now start in Sunday's Chinese GP is sixth.

Hamilton said his team discovered the gearbox problem in the last couple of days.

McLaren's confidence is still high after securing three podium finishes in the first two races of the season, with Jenson Button capturing the Australian GP and Hamilton twice finishing in third.

McLaren's strong start suggests it has closed the gap with Red Bull, the dominant team last year.
