Constructors' championship Red Bull's

Red Bull lost the top spot at the drivers' podium on Sunday, but the team won its third consecutive Formula One constructors' championship behind Sebastian Vettel's second-place finish at the U.S. Grand Prix.

''I'm very, very happy for the team,'' Vettel said after Lewis Hamilton passed him on lap 42 to win and push him to second at the Circuit of the Americas. ''It's been a tough year so far and they have been pushing incredibly hard; they deserve to win, as we have been the best team.''

Red Bull has earned seven wins and eight pole positions this season with one race left to run next week in Brazil. Vettel started on the pole Sunday and teammate Mark Webber was in the No. 3 spot.

But Webber did not finish after retiring on the 17th lap with engine problems.

''Obviously Mark and I were pushing throughout the year. It was a shame for Mark not to finish today,'' Vettel said. ''Lewis beat us fair and square. We showed we had the pac

Safety dominates discussion as F1 heads to Monza

Safety discussions are dominating Formula One as the series heads to the Italian Grand Prix after a scary near-miss over the weekend.

Championship leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari nearly had his head clipped when Romain Grosjean's Lotus flew over him in a wild, multi-car accident at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix.

Grosjean went for a small gap and clipped Lewis Hamilton's McLaren. That sent both cars spinning and Grosjean's Lotus went airborne over Alonso's Ferrari, which then took out Sergio Perez's Sauber.

''The risk was large and seeing another car flying over one of ours, just a few centimeters from his helmet, made us feel like our hearts were in our throats for a few dozen seconds,'' Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali said.

Grosjean was banned for one race and will be replaced by Jerome D'Ambrosio at Lotus this weekend. Alonso said immediately afterward that he ''felt a train coming with a big, big hit,'' while Hamilton briefly con

Safety dominates F1 discussion

As Formula One prepares to race in Ferrari's home grand prix at Monza this weekend, safety still dominates discussion.

Championship leader and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso nearly had his head clipped when Romain Grosjean's Lotus flew over him in a wild multi-car accident at the start of last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

Ideas being debated run from some sort of cage around drivers' heads to adding rear-wheel bumpers to employing running starts. Others have called for a football-like system whereby if you get two warnings for reckless driving you miss the next race.

It's all talk for now in a climate which feels similar to the aftermath of Ayrton Senna's death in 1994.

However, Alonso is alive and well and the Italian GP represents a chance for him to bounce back and pad his 24-point lead over Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.

The crash sent Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez off the track at the first corner. Grosjean went for a small gap and clipped Hamilton's McLaren.

Alonso says Ferrari can't fix problems overnight

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso says his team realizes it can't fix its problems overnight.

Ferrari has struggled and failed to build on Fernando Alonso's surprise win at the Malaysian Grand Prix last month, with the Spaniard placing ninth at the Chinese GP on Sunday and teammate Felipe Massa finishing down in 13th.

''There's no point denying we are disappointed,'' team principal Stefano Domenicali said. ''We had the potential to get a better result than this, but we did not manage it.''

One of Ferrari's biggest problems so far this year is a lack of pace in both qualifying and races - an issue that can't be addressed until after next week's Bahrain GP, Alonso said.

''Obviously, this does not leave me very optimistic for Bahrain, on a track where traction and speed are vital, exactly the areas where we are weakest,'' he said after the race.

Earlier this week, Alonso said the team was working to improve the car's aerodynamics to im

Rain adds to uncertainty for F1 opener

The start of the Formula One season is getting an extra dose of uncertainty with wet weather being forecast for the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.

The forecast for Melbourne is for rain and possible thunderstorms from Friday through race day, which will render much of the best-laid preparations and preseason predictions irrelevant.

Throw in the always-slippery Melbourne street circuit, guessing games about the behavior of the new Pirelli tires, and uncertainty over how teams have adapted to the new rules, and this weekend's season opener is shaping up to be an unpredictable affair.

That's just what the racing series needs to start 2012.

Last year was short on drama, as German driver Sebastian Vettel set a record for the number of pole positions in a season and cruised to the title with four races to spare.

It would be a brave gamble to predict anything other than a Red Bull championship this season, as the team retains Vettel, able deputy Mark Webber, team principal Christian Horner and perhaps
