Marussia confirm merger talks with Caterham

The Formula One team Marussia has confirmed it has held merger talks with rival Caterham in the latest sign of the financial struggles faced by the smaller teams on the grid.

Graeme Lowdon, Marussia president and sporting director, said Friday that ''talks took place'' but were not ongoing.

Caterham also confirmed the Christmas 2012 discussion, but spokesman Tom Webb said no deal was reached because ''it was soon clear that a mutually beneficial solution could not be achieved,'' adding it had less to gain from the move, since it has several blue chip sponsors.

Marussia won no points in 2012 and continues to endure financial difficulties. It made headlines earlier this year when Timo Glock left in a cost-cutting move, replaced by a driver who could bring in sponsorship dollars.

De Villota returns home after crash

The Marussia Formula One team says test driver Maria de Villota has returned home to Spain after the accident in which she lost her right eye.

De Villota was hospitalized for more than two weeks and had two operations after suffering severe head and facial injuries when she crashed into a team truck during a test at an airfield in England on July 3.

Marussia said Saturday that the 32-year-old De Villota returned home Friday.

The Russian-owned team said she had made ''significant progress'' over the past two weeks and was well enough to go home. The team thanked the English hospital staff for the ''remarkable care and attention'' De Villota received.

Marussia race drivers Timo Glock and Charles Pic also wished De Villota well in her recovery.

2012 European Grand Prix Recap

This weekend marked what is generally considered to be the most boring race on the Formula 1 calendar.
On the F1 docket for five years, Valencia typically yields races in which the starting order is the finishing the order with little change of running order in between; not even DRS and KERS have been able to inject some excitement to the high speed Spanish circuit. People know Valencia as, “that track where Mark Webber went upside down,” and not much else.
As expected, the tires were still the main obstacle for the teams. It seems to be a matter of luck as to whether the teams get their setups adjusted to properly match the tires at a given circuit.
Ferrari was the team affected the most with both Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa not making it past Q2, qualifying 11 and 13 respectively, a poor showing marked by the chairman of Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, shaking his head in disappointment.
Qualifying was also disappointing for Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Marussia’s Timo Glock....

Marussia's Glock out of European GP with illness

Marussia says driver Timo Glock will not participate in Formula One's European Grand Prix on Sunday because of a stomach illness that also kept him out of qualifying.

The team, formerly known as Virgin Racing, says that Glock's ''symptoms suggest that he is suffering from an intestinal infection. He has been advised that it would be unwise for him to race given the severity of the complaint.''

Teammate Charles Pic posted the slowest time from Saturday's qualifying and will start last on the grid in Valencia.

Neither driver has earned a point so far this season through seven races.

2012 Canadian Grand Prix Recap

Montreal has proven to be a difficult adjustment for the teams in the wake of the previous, slower, grands prix. With the new low down-force aero packages proving to be difficult for the drivers – with many drivers fighting heavy over-steer through the tight chicanes and lock up in the heavy braking zone into Turn 10.
Williams’ Bruno Senna and Caterham’s Heikki Kovalainen had the most difficult time, both crashing out in the free practice sessions at the Champions Wall and Turn 9, respectively. The other Williams car, piloted by Spanish Grand Prix winner Pastor Maldonado, clipped the Wall of Champions on a flying lap during Q2, damaging its rear suspension.
Fresh off of their victory in Monaco, Red Bull Racing seemed poised to continue their quick pace at Montreal, despite the FIA ruling their floor illegal. Fast laps during the free practice sessions for Webber and Vettel culminated in a pole position for Vettel with a time 0.303 seconds faster than fellow front row sitter McLa...

Formula One: 2012 Monaco Grand Prix Team Recap

The 2012 Monaco Grand Prix was a record breaking event in many ways and provided a great result no doubt. However, the action on track was limited and there were very few position changes.
Red Bull-Renault
Mark Webber Qualified (Q) P2, Race (R) P1 Sebastian Vettel Q P10, R P4
The Red Bull team did not have the fastest car this weekend and yet they leave Monaco with a race win and leading the Constructors’ Championship.
Mark Webber seemed to be dialled into the circuit all weekend and was strong throughout qualifying and the race. Webber fought hard in all three qualifying session s and provided a real challenge to eventual qualifying winner Michael Schumacher.
Schumacher had a five place penalty after his shunt with Bruno Senna in Spain and so Webber effectively qualified first. There were question marks haning over the Red Bull man’s starts, but Webber pulled away from turn one and never looked back.
Sebastian Vettel was much quieter during qualifying and even looked as if he...

Formula 1: 2012 Spanish Grand Prix Team Analysis

The 2012 Spanish Grand Prix was not the best ever but it did give us some close racing and a brand new race winner.
Williams-Renault
Pastor Maldonado qualified (Q) 2, race result (R) 1 Bruno Senna Q P18, R DNF
Well, both Saturday and Sunday provided very different results for both Williams drivers.
The Williams Team went to the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix having made their best start to a Formula One season for years. After a very successful Mugello test the team looked like a serious contender for a strong qualifying performance.
Pastor Maldinado’s speed was evident from the start, but Bruno Senna never seemed to get started. Whilst his team mate sat comfortably in P1 at the end of the first qualifying session, Senna was languishing down in the elimination zone.
Senna pushed his car to the limit and made a small but costly mistake on his last lap. His Williams clipped the corner going into turn one. This unbalanced the car and sent Senna off into the gravel trap and out of Q1.

2012 Bahrain Grand Prix, Team Analysis

The 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix was arguably the most controversial race ever. I can probably count the number of times I’ve agreed with Bernie Ecclestone on one finger, and I certainly disagreed with everything he has said over the past few days.
Despite what Bernie et al stated, I don’t believe you can separate sports from politics in circumstances such as those in Bahrain. Whilst I agree that there are Formula One races in other countries with suspect human rights records, the sport has never before acted as an endorsement of safety within a state.
So, I didn’t think the race weekend should have gone ahead, but it did and it will contribute towards the final standings in the 2012 Formula One World Championship. For this reason, and this reason only, I will report on the results, but I will make no further comment on the off track news.
Red Bull Racing
Sebastian Vettel Qualified (Q) P1 Race Result (R) P1Mark Webber Q P4 R P4
It seems strange to imagine just how pleased Red B...

Formula One: How Did Your Team Fare in the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix?

The 2012 Chinese Grand Prix weekend was great from start to finish. Mercedes were able to score their first victory since 1955 and Nico Rosberg was able to score his first victory in seven years of Formula One racing.

It was a comfortable Merc victory in the end, but how did the other teams fare in a close fought race?

Mercedes GP

Nico Rosberg Qualifying (Q) P1, Race (R) P1
Michael Schumacher Q P3, R DNF

China’s qualifying provided Mercedes GP with their first pole position since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix and Nico Rosberg his first ever pole position.

The team that won the two 2009 World Championships as Brawn GP have struggled to make a significant impression since their re-birth as Mercedes GP the following year. However, they have always had raw speed and have been turning heads in practice and early qualifying sessions since the opening race in Australia.

Having said that, despite promising a lot, Mercedes didn’t really set qualifying on fire in the first...

Pic to drive for F1 team Marussia next year

Charles Pic will drive for Marussia in Formula One next year, replacing Belgian driver Jerome d'Ambrosio.

Virgin Racing will be known as Marussia Virgin Racing next season. It announced on its website that the 21-year-old Frenchman will drive alongside Timo Glock of Germany.

D'Ambrosio drove with Glock at last weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix in the final race of the season. Neither scored a point during the entire F1 season.

Pic impressed during the young drivers' test held during the Abu Dhabi GP. He spent the past two seasons competing in the GP2 Series.

Moscow-based sports car manufacturer Marussia Motoring became Virgin Racing's controlling stakeholder last February.
