Magic, Pelicans open to trading their lottery winnings

The top overall pick in the NBA Draft has been traded only once on Draft night in the Lottery era. the Magic, a year after selecting Shaquille O'Neal with the top overall pick and lucking into the top pick after a 41-41 season that saw them tied for the final Playoff spot in the East, shipped Chris Webber to Golden State for a point guard named Anfernee Hardaway (and three first round picks).

There have been other trades -- Philadelphia traded the top overall pick before the draft to Cleveland in 1986, allowing the Cavaliers to select Brad Daugherty -- however, trading the top pick in the Draft is extremely rare. This is supposed to be the ultimate prize. A reward for losing and a booster shot for franchises that need the most help.

These are where your franchise players are supposed to come from.

What to do in a weak draft then?

With hardly anyone showing any excitement for top Draft prospects like Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore and Victor Oladipo as a franchise game-change...

The Shot heard 'round world remains a major pain

Yeah, I remember where I was. I remember exactly what I threw at the television, too.

Twenty-four years ago yesterday, Michael Jordan forever changed NBA history.

The date was May 7, 1989. The event was a deciding Game 5 of a first-round playoff series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls. The series was tied at two games apiece, with the finale at the old Richfield Coliseum.

At the time, I was just a dumb kid who lived about 10 miles from the Coliseum. Naturally, the Cavs were my favorite team in my favorite league.

Actually, when it comes to the NBA, Ive always rooted for teams based on their personnel -- not their location or the color of their uniforms.

These Cavs offered the best of all worlds.

They featured the type of players I love, team-first guys such as Brad Daugherty, Larry Nance and Mark Price who could pass and shoot and always played hard.

They were good people, too. They were quality athletes who understood the game. They played an old-school style, as if their playbook ha

Best random jersey of the year so far – Chris Mills Cavs

Sometimes a random jersey gets sent our way that absolutely floors us. This weekend that happened as our friend Mark Stafford captured this Hoopster rocking a Chris Mills Cavaliers jersey in Brussels. Seeing someone wearing a Chris Mills jersey in Cleveland none the less anywhere in the United States would be impressive but to see it in Brussels takes this to a whole other stratosphere. As you can see by the looks on the faces of the guys at this bar they can’t believe what they are seeing either.
So what it is about seeing a Chris Mills jersey that makes it so dope? To start Mills was only on the Cavs for four seasons and while there he was decent but not great. He averaged double digit points in three of his four seasons, was average on the glass (about 5 boards per game), and didn’t do much with the rock (around 2 dimes per game). Those numbers say nice contributor but not “I need to go and buy his jersey ASAP and never take it off”. It would be like 15 years from now seeing some...

JTG Daugherty looks to add second NASCAR Cup team

It has been talked about for some time. It is gaining traction once again. JTG Daugherty would like to expand to a second team, the latest cycling of this story comes from Mike Bagley. Bagley spoke to team co-owner Brad Daugherty who said the organization would like to add a second team early in the 2013 season.
Currently JTG Daugherty fields one car, the No. 47 Toyota driven by Bobby Labonte. Labonte’s best finish of the 2012 season was a ninth place finish at Martinsville. The 2013 season will mark his third with the organization.
Adding a second team would be a building step for the team who has done a good job at keeping their existing sponsors while branching off to pick up a few additional ones.

Approaching the Indianapolis Motor Speedway race weekend, JTG Daugherty Racing announced today significant changes that include a new general manager and crew chief change for the No. 47 single-car NASCAR Sprint Cup Series operation. Bobby Hutchens joins the racing organization as general manager.“Bobby Hutchens is someone I have admired for a long time and the individual I’ve turned to many times for direction over my 18 years as a car owner,” said JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter. “In my opinion, he is the best in the business and we are fortunate to have someone of his caliber step in to help steer our team in the right direction during this important transition.”David Hyder will assume the role as interim crew chief for this weekend’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.“We have our eye on the crew chief that we want for the long term, but couldn’t get it all done in time for the next few races,” Geschickter said. “We would rather make the right decision for the lo...

NASCAR’s next safety fix? Less Confederate flags

The image Friday night was just too ironic to ignore.
Brad Daugherty, African American NASCAR commentator and car owner, working for ESPN prior to Nationwide action at Darlington — with a Confederate flag flying from an RV in the infield behind him.
A Confederate flag may fly from the South Carolina State House, but this isn’t a Palmetto State thing. I’ve consistently seen rebel flags at Pocono and Dover, and I’ll be shocked if I don’t see at least some at Watkins Glen and New Hampshire when I make my way to those tracks later in the year.
For Daugherty, a 7-footer with a press credential, there’s a combination of insulation/intimidation factor that likely keeps him from feeling too uncomfortable in what ostensibly would seem to be an unfriendly atmosphere.
But what about the average person of color who wants to enjoy America’s No. 1 spectator sport and feel safe and secure? For all of the talk of NASCAR’s prominence exploding in the past 30 years, you can’t help but wonder how much...

Joey Crawford talks about throwing Larry Nance and Brad Daugherty out for laughing

Joey Crawford is that old, bald, NBA referee who signals technical fouls with only his two index fingers. You already knew who I was talking about because you probably find him annoying, but I added his picture anyways just to make sure we're on the same page. Crawford's been blowing whistles and passing out tech's all over the League for the last 35 years, and he even tried to fight Tim Duncan once. In addition to all that, he also threw Cavalier Legends Brad Daugherty and Larry Nance out of a game in Cleveland way back in the day for laughing while they were sitting on the Cavs bench.Crawford opened up about his career in the NBA in a New York Times article that ran over the weekend, and below is where Joey Crawford talks about launching Nance and Daugherty for the crime of laughing:
I can honestly say, I have no idea who I gave my first technical to. I have no idea. I gave so many of them. I hate to say it, but when I first started, it was like giving candy.

JTG Daugherty Racing Continuing to Make Progress Entering Kansas Speedway with Labonte and Reese Towpower

JTG Daugherty Racing was formed in 1995 as a thriving NASCAR Nationwide Series operation winning their first race the very next season with driver Jeff Fuller. The team also dabbled in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but from the start co-owner Tad Geschickter’s vision was to compete on the NASCAR Sprint Series level. In 2009, the single-car operation ventured into unchartered waters with Australian driver Marcos Ambrose and Geschickter’s lifelong goal came to fruition. Today, 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion leads the team into race number eight of the 2012 season at Kansas Speedway for the STP 400 behind the wheel of the No. 47 Reese Towpower & Highland Toyota Camry. It’s been a long road with a lot of changes and sacrifices, but Geschickter feels good about the team’s journey. “I believe we are ahead of schedule this season,” said Geschickter, who owns the team along with Brad Daugherty and Jodi Geschickter. “There have been some hiccups on fuel mileage with t...

Kyrie Irving Wants To Make Cleveland A Free Agent Destination

The last time the Cleveland Cavaliers drafted a player with the first overall pick that guy never really was all that vocal about encouraging NBA free agents to come join him here. And no, I'm not talking about Brad Daugherty. I'm not trying to drum up any negative feelings about any ex-Cavalier players either, I only mention for added perspective. I swear. We're continuing to move forward here at Stepien Rules in what we've dubbed the 2011-12 Season Of Hope, and we are more than happy to do so. There's plenty of reasons to be encouraged if you think about. One of those reasons is Kyrie Irving. With this extended off-season allowing him ample time to heal whatever may have once ailed his famous toe, he appears ready to take on the NBA challenge that now awaits him.
