The Wrong Correction

In the top of the sixth in Minnesota, the White Sox’s Ramon Castro hits a ball to the baggie in rightfield that Michael Cuddyer catches. It hit in the middle of the glove, rolled up, but the replay clearly showed the ball stayed in the glove. It was called an out. The [...]

White Sox roll to season-high 5-game win streak, 2 games over .500
Hey, guys! Come look! Quick! I can see first place from up here!
Jose Contreras continued his surprising return with another strong 8-inning performance Wednesday night. He's gone 8 innings in all of his victories this season, all 3 of them. I kid.
The Sox are 3-2 in Contreras starts since his...

Rogers' MLB whispers: Flowers on track for Sox

The White Sox improved their catching situation with the addition of Ramon Castro, but they would go with Tyler Flowers if they lost A.J. Pierzynski to injury. Broadcaster Hawk Harrelson calls Flowers "one of the strongest men in baseball," and he's showing it by hitting .280 with seven homers and 25 RBIs at Double-A Birmingham. He scored 34 runs in his first 44 games, thanks in part to a nice batting eye. He drew nine more walks than he had strikeouts in May (27-18). The Sox ha...

White Sox - Acquired Castro

Chicago White Sox - Acquired C Ramon Castro and some cash for P Lance Broadway.

Excellent move by the White Sox here. It's not going to push the Sox to win the division, but when acquiring talent, when you can get a league-average player very cheaply, it's very hard to resist it.

This move also represents some very odd planning by the Mets. Omir Santos, the player who has made Castro "expendable" is a 28-year-old with a career .636 OPS in AAA ball who has had a couple of ...

Mets in trouble with MLB

Only a day into spring training and the New York Mets are already in trouble with the commissioner's office. So what did the Mets do? They violated MLB rules on how many "regular" players must attend road spring training games. They brought only 1 regular to their game vs the Detroit Tigers. What makes this violation worse is JUST the day before, MLB executive VP Jimmie Lee Solomon sent a memo out reminding all teams of the policy.

Lo Duca on the Shelf

Lo Duca is scheduled for an MRI today and if all is well he should be back behind the plate on August 27th, when the Mets open up a four game series at Citizens Bank Park against the Phillies. Ramon Castro exited yesterday's game in the third inning with pain in his lower back, so Lo Duca might be missed more than originally thought. Castro is listed as day-to-day and if he does miss any time, look for Mike DeFelice to take the starting catcher job until Castro is able to return.

Mets: Who's On 2nd? Mark Loretta?

According to the Daily News, the Mets have been looking at Astros 2nd baseman Mark Loretta.

Much like Paul Lo Duca, Loretta is a professional hitter and ideally suited for any lineup's No. 2 slot. Manager Willie Randolph has been searching for a No. 2 hitter seemingly all season, and particularly since Lo Duca was forced to vacate that spot in the wake of Moises Alou's injury. Once Alou returns to his regular No. 6 spot in the order, Lo Duca would presumably return to the 2-hole, though nothing is set in stone at this point.

With a bit more foot speed and a higher OBP, Loretta might represent an upgrade over Lo Duca in that spot. The fiery catcher has struggled this season, particularly as of late, as the career .288 hitter has seen his average dip to .265 and his OBP to just .310. Backup Ramon Castro has seen his playing time increase. Whether this trend continues remains to be seen, however if Loretta were to slot in as the team's No. 2 hitter, it would minimize the disruption of the lineup were Lo Duca and Castro to platoon.

Franco's Exit Spells More Time for Castro, Alomar

While most assumed that the promotion of Lastings Milledge would coincide with Sandy Alomar Jr.'s return to AAA New Orleans, the organization surprisingly has designated Julio Franco for assignment instead. According to MLB.com's Marty Noble, by retaining Alomar, the Mets will be able to find more pinch-hitting at-bats for Ramon Castro, whose status as the team's lone backup catcher restricted his availability as a pinch-hitter. Alomar, meanwhile, will be looked upon to replace the veteran leadership of the departing Franco. According to Noble, Franco is happy about the move.

Injuries Are Piling Up For Mets

Catcher Paul Lo Duca left yesterday's Mets/Yankees game in the 4th inning with a bruised tricep. He was struck by a pitch by Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang in the first inning. After feeling some stiffness in his elbow, Lo Duca was removed from the game. Lo Duca is currently listed as day-to-day, but add him to the growing list of injured Mets stars.

Carlos Beltran is another one of those stars. The All-Star centerfielder has been playing through a quad injury. Judging by his recent slump (3 for his last 26 at-bats with 1 RBI), you can see his game has been obviously affected. Right now, Beltran is in a much tougher spot then Lo Duca. If Lo Duca needs a couple days off the serviceable Ramon Castro can fill in. With Moises Alou and Endy Chavez on the DL, Beltran does not have that luxury and he knows it.
