UF's Riley Cooper Making Big Strides

University of Florida cornerback Joe Haden saw the long, lanky figure moving toward him. Not only did it keep getting bigger; it seemed to get faster with every step.

By the time Haden, one of Florida's fastest players, realized 6-foot-4, 220-pound Gators receiver Riley Cooper could match his speed, it was too late.

"His speed is deceptive," Haden said. "It doesn't really look like he's moving that fast. But if he gets one step ahead of you, he's going to open it up."

UF's Riley Cooper Blazing His Path

"That's a goal of mine," he said. "Coming in here, there weren't a lot of people really saying that one of my attributes is speed. They were saying I'm a physical player and probably a possession receiver. I wanted to prove that's not true. That's what I'm trying to do."

Cooper is quickly distancing himself from the perception. He's doing it with his blazing speed. Actually, stunning speed - because at 6-foot-3 and a muscular 216 pounds, no one sees it coming.

He stunned Western Kentucky's secondary last Saturday just like he stunned his new teammates when he first arrived at Florida a little more than a year ago. "I knew he'd be fast, but I didn't think he'd be as fast as he is," senior wide receiver Andre Caldwell said. "There aren't too many his size who can run like that. It was a shocker to me."

Shocking, stunning. You name it.

Caldwell and Cooper Live Up To Meyer's Hopes

Florida coach Urban Meyer predicted several times during the past few weeks that senior WR Andre Caldwell was ready to have a big season and that sophomore WR Riley Cooper would see more balls thrown his way. Meyer was correct on both counts; Caldwell and Cooper each finished with more than 100 receiving yards in Saturday's 49-3 win against Western Kentucky.

Caldwell, a Jefferson High graduate, hauled in the Gators' first completion of the season for a 48-yard gain on Florida's third play from scrimmage. For the day, Caldwell caught three passes for 103 yards.

UF's Riley Cooper Torches Hilltoppers

In his brief Florida career, Riley Cooper is already establishing a trend. Any team named Western, he dominates. Last year, Cooper rolled up career highs against Western Carolina. On Saturday, Cooper began his sophomore campaign by terrorizing Western Kentucky during a 49-3 Florida win.

The speedy sophomore caught four passes for 122 yards, including touchdown receptions of 59 and 42 yards. Afterward, Florida coach Urban Meyer said Cooper may be seeing more balls thrown his way as the season goes on. "He's definitely a deep threat," Meyer said. "He's big and he's extremely fast. He deserves a few more shots."
