What Worked, Didn’t Work, and Sort of Worked in ‘Skyfall’ – Part Two

‘Skyfall’ just secured the largest opening weekend for a James Bond film ever, hauling in right around $90 million, simultaneously upping its worldwide total to over half a billion dollars. Given how much time I invested in the lead-up to the film’s release, I wanted to take the necessary time and share my honest thoughts on the different elements seen in the movie. Part One of my reactions, which included takes on the relationship between Bond and Q, Silva as the villain, and the action sequences can be found here. Let’s dive into Part Two.
What Worked
Daniel Craig’s clothes
This kills me, because it’s just not fair to us normal people. Tom Ford is the designer behind Craig’s many suits (including the tuxedo) and other outfits seen in the movie. It all just fits so well. It’s all custom, which again, taunts us regular folk who still has to buy stuff off the rack. Craig’s a very handsome and overall good-looking person in general, but slap him in a suit that fits just right and the...

Shaken AND Stirred: The NBA and James Bond

Those who know me well know that my two favorite pastimes are the NBA and the James Bond film series. The latter involves a license to kill, while the former involves many with a license to thrill. This autumn marks the 50th
anniversary of 007′s debut on the silver screen, and this weekend, the release of the latest Bond film, Skyfall. With that in mind, I present, on a film-by-film basis, the NBA figure(s) who is/are the best match with a prominent feature of each film in the 007 series:[1]
1. Dr. No (released in 1962): Who else but Dikembe Mutumbo, the NBA’s all-time leader in blocked shots, who became famous/notorious for wagging his index finger at opponents whose shot he had just blocked, as if to say “No no no”.
2. From Russia With Love (1963): This one goes to Andrei Kirilenko, who is the best Russian-born NBA player to date, his decline over the past several years notwithstanding. Besides, with him, “From Russia with Love” takes on a whole new meaning when considering the a...

Mailbag: Knoxville attracts focus of nation

Jessica Chastain just killed someone, but that's not the story here.

Actually her name is Rachel Singer at the moment, star ofThe Debt, and she shot the man (he's evil, don't worry) from about 100 yards away with a post-World War II handgun. Roger Moore would be proud. It's quite riveting for a beginning. There's a flashback, a suicide by bus, the Scooby-Doo mobile and the type of upbeat, drum-driven music that makes writing a mailbag during a thriller difficult.

But it serves a purpose outside of mere distraction.

It transports its viewers to another place a film's greatest power and I'm along for the ride. It's symbolic, really, the type of weak metaphor fit for a mailbag's musings, for new environments are on the weekend menu for Fox on the Fifty. Knoxville, Tenn., and the confines of Neyland Stadium await for the first time, a College Gameday atmosphere no less.

No. 18 Florida will make the road trip, too, visiting the freshly-ranked Volunteers in what is perhaps

Daniel Craig to Play James Bond Two More Times

You could say I technically “grew up” with Pierce Brosnan playing James Bond (he held the role from 1995 to 2002 — I was born in 1989), but I never really appreciated the Bond films until Daniel Craig took over in 2006. To me, Daniel Craig is James Bond. I say that with all due respect to Sean Connery, and, yes, even the (at times) hokey Roger Moore, but I wasn’t even thought of yet while they were giving their takes on 007.
I want Craig to play James Bond forever. That won’t happen. But he will play Bond at least two more times following November’s ‘Skyfall,’ his third and the series’ 23rd entry. According to MI6, Craig has signed on to play 007 in the 24th and 25th installments, which is about all I can realistically ask for.
Playing the character two more times would up Craig’s total to five, just one shy of Connery and two shy of Moore. There was talk earlier this summer of Craig donning the tuxedo a total of eight times, but five more films following ‘Skyfall’ would put Craig in

Christmas on the Farm 2011

It’s that time of year that gets you in the mood to be jolly. The biggest of all holidays is loved by all, for many reasons. Phillies prospects are no different. I checked in recently with several minor leaguers to find out what stands out for them as reasons to get excited for Christmas.Highly ranked lefty pitching prospect and the Phils’ #1 draft choice last year, Jesse Biddle (pictured), took part….as did outfielders Brian Gump, Tyson Gillies and another former top draft selection Anthony Hewitt…right-handed hurler Tyler Knigge also offered his thoughts along with slugging first baseman Jim Murphy. What’s your favorite holiday movie?Jesse Biddle: My favorite movie is easily “Elf” with Will Ferrell because he plays a character perfect for my sense of humor. There is something about the innocent slapstick humor that I find hilarious.Brian Gump: Probably “Nightmare Before Christmas”, I think that counts as a Christmas movie right? It’s just a really imaginative movie and i...
