Hunter-Reay leads Friday practice at Long Beach

Fresh off a victory in the most recent race at Barber Motorsports Park, Ryan Hunter-Reay threw down the fastest lap in Friday's practice sessions for the Toyota Grand Prix at Long Beach (Sunday, 4 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network), a blitz of 1 minute, 9.4224 seconds around the 1.97-mile street circuit.

However, the top story from Friday was Mike Conway, who is racing this weekend on a one-off for Rahal Letterman Lanigan. Conway, the 2011 GPLB champion, was second-quickest in the No. 17 machine, posting a fast lap of 1 minute, 9.4603 seconds to serve notice that he may be a potential threat.

"We wanted to get through a few changes during that session," Conway said. "But the car feels good from the moment we stepped on the track. I'm just happy to be here. Trying to do a good job for these guys. [The car] feels good. Pretty happy with the balance. I think we have some areas to work on. But to still be running around the top two in the last two sessions is pr...

IN THE PITS: It's Hunter-Reay's time to shine

(Eds: Retransmitting for all needing. With AP Photos.) By JENNA FRYER AP Auto Racing Writer For many different reasons, Ryan Hunter-Reay didn't receive the proper accolades for winning last year's IndyCar championship.

The spotlight didn't shine nearly as bright as it should have on Hunter-Reay, who in overtaking Will Power down the stretch became the first American in six years to win the title. His accomplishment was overshadowed by the firing of CEO Randy Bernard, the politics of open-wheel racing and a leaderless series that sank into a long offseason slumber.

Was he lost in the shuffle and a little bit neglected? Without a doubt.

But with his run on Sunday, Hunter-Reay showed he's going to make it difficult for anyone to overlook him this season. He bounced back from a disappointing season-opening race at St. Pete to win at Barber Motorsports Park, one of his worst tracks.

He had to work for the victory, too.

Hunter-Reay set up his run to Victory Lane on Saturday with a last-gasp, po

Hunter-Reay to be honored in Fort Lauderdale

IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay will be honored in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale with a public celebration next Wednesday.

The three-hour street party will be highlighted with a proclamation from Mayor Jack Seiler.

It's part of a busy three days for Hunter-Reay, who will open next week with a visit to DHL headquarters in Plantation on Monday to celebrate his championship with employees and management. DHL has been co-primary sponsor for Hunter-Reay the last two seasons.

On Tuesday, he'll participate in a closed Firestone test at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It will be Hunter-Reay's first time driving the No. 28 Andretti Autosport Chevrolet since he won his first IndyCar championship in the Sept. 15 season finale.

Hunter-Reay became the first American since 2006 to win the title.

IndyCar title pushes Hunter-Reay to new level

Ryan Hunter-Reay opened the IndyCar season determined to take his career to another level.

He had a chance to race for the season-opening win at St. Pete, where a victory would have given him a nice little bump to start things. But when fuel became an issue, and his crew implored him to save gas over the closing laps, he backed off and settled for a third-place finish.

It's not easy to ask a driver, especially one who opened the season with all of three IndyCar victories, not to chase the checkered flag. Hunter-Reay willingly did it, though, because he'd changed his thinking and made the big picture - collecting every point possible - his focus.

It paid off Saturday night when Hunter-Reay capped a career year with his first championship at a major racing level. In finishing fourth, he beat Will Power by three points for the IndyCar title, the first for an American since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

IndyCar championship contender Ryan Hunter-Reay has agreed to a multiyear contract extension with Andretti Autosport.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press on Friday night that Hunter-Reay had reached an agreement to stay with the team.

Hunter-Reay goes into Saturday night's season finale at Auto Club Speedway trailing leader Will Power by 17 points in the standings. He's trying to become the first American since 2006 to win the IndyCar championship.

He was reportedly being courted by Powerhouse Penske Racing.

Hunter-Reay to discuss contract with Andretti

IndyCar championship contender Ryan Hunter-Reay says he expects to speak to team owner Michael Andretti on Thursday about his contract.

Hunter-Reay is in the final year of his contract with Andretti Autosport, where he's driven the last three seasons. It is his longest tenure with one team, and he has cited that continuity as a contributor to the career season he's had.

He is reportedly being courted by Penske Racing, which is considered to be the top team in IndyCar.

Hunter-Reay goes into Saturday night's season finale at Auto Club Speedway trailing series leader Will Power by 17 points. It's the first time the 31-year-old American has been in the championship hunt, and it's the first season he's won multiple races.

Hunter-Reay's four victories are an IndyCar best this year.

There might come a day when Ryan Hunter-Reay forgives Alex Tagliani for running into him at Sonoma.

It probably won't come before this weekend's race at Baltimore.

Hunter-Reay is still seething over an incident with Tagliani on Sunday at Sonoma that drastically hurt his chances to win his first IndyCar championship. The American was likely headed to a third-place finish when he was hit by Tagliani, who isn't involved in the title race.

''I know in years past, when I was racing with guys racing for the championship, you absolutely have to have that in mind,'' Hunter-Reay said Wednesday. ''You must be thinking to yourself, `I am not going to be a factor in this because I am not in the championship race.'''

''Unfortunately, Tagliani became a factor in this championship.''

There might come a day when Ryan Hunter-Reay forgives Alex Tagliani for running into him at Sonoma.

It probably won't be anytime soon. Hunter-Reay is too busy trying to salvage the IndyCar championship.

Contact with Tagliani ruined a podium finish for Hunter-Reay at Sonoma on Sunday, and it dramatically hurt his chances to chase down Will Power for the series title. The incident was a 23-point swing for Hunter-Reay, who is trails Power by 36 points with two races remaining.

Tagliani says he apologized to Hunter-Reay, and will continue to do so until it is accepted.

Hunter-Reay says he has to focus only on the race Sunday at Baltimore and what he needs to do to win the title.

Hunter-Reay's penalty proves costly

Ryan Hunter-Reay bounced back from a rough opening day at Edmonton by winning the pole in Saturday's qualifying.

But the IndyCar Series points leader will start 11th because he'll be penalized for an unapproved engine change. The penalty is 10 spots on the starting grid for Sunday's race.

Hunter-Reay has won the last three IndyCar races to move into the points lead. He's the first American since 2006 to lead the IndyCar standings, and he takes a 34-point lead over Will Power into Sunday's race.

The Andretti Autosport driver had a rough Friday at Edmonton, where he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for an incident in the first practice session. Then IndyCar said he'd be penalized for his engine change.

Dario Franchitti will start first because of Hunter-Reay's penalty.

Hunter-Reay makes it 3 in a row by winning Toronto

Coming off two wins on oval courses, Ryan Hunter-Reay showed he can also dominate a street course, winning the Honda Indy Toronto on Sunday.

In taking over the points series lead, Hunter-Reay led the final 28 laps of the 85-lap race. He is the first American-born driver to win three straight since AJ Allmendinger in 2006.

Hunter-Reay won under caution after numerous pileups followed a restart with three laps remaining. The trouble began when Sebastien Bourdais bumped and went into the wall on Turn 1. A few seconds later, Dario Franchitti, Ryan Briscoe and Simon Pagenaud and Ed Carpenter became entangled in Turn 3.

Hunter-Reay made it through, just beating Charlie Kimball to the corner and holding him off before the yellow flags. Kimball finished second, followed by Mike Conway.

Ryan Hunter-Reay was fastest on a wet track in the last practice before Sunday's Sao Paulo 300, which will likely be affected by rain for the third straight year.

Hunter-Reay set the pace in the morning warmup as drivers struggled to stay on track in wet conditions on the streets of South America's biggest city. Pole winner Will Power was third and Dario Franchitti, starting second, was 14th.

Rain has affected the Sao Paulo race every year since it joined the IndyCar calendar in 2010. It was postponed until Monday in the inaugural season, and last year it was delayed and eventually cut short.

It was expected to rain all day Sunday, but organizers expected that changes to improve the track's drainage system would work.
