Free agency looms. Will any of the Twins five free agents return?
It's been confirmed that the Twins have had opening talks with Carl Pavano's agent, but other than Ron Gardenhire saying he'd be interested in bringing back Orlando Cabrera as his second basemen there's been no news on the rest of Minnesota's remaining free agents.

Baseball Free Agency Starts Friday

It is amazing how dates like this can sneak up on you when your expectations are nil. The Indians were semi-active last season in free agency. They went out and signed Mark DeRosa, Carl Pavano, and Kerry Wood. This season? Not so much. At this point, it is tough for me to even sit here [...]

Why We Should Care About Pitching Independent of Fielding

When the 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner conceded during a press conference that he follows a lesser known three-letter acronym statistic (FIP) than the reigning mainstream accepted one (ERA), pundits took to the keyboards to either extol his virtues of being a forward-thinker or criticize his tomfoolery of shrouding himself in “new age” nonsense. Why hesitation exists to embrace FIP is beyond my comprehension. Yes, relinquishing what you are comfortable with is difficult, but...

Potential bargains, busts at each position

Free agency once was a yellow brick road to riches. Free agents could count on being wined and dined and enriched. Does anyone remember a recruiting tour of the country by Carl Pavano -- yes, Carl Pavano -- unofficially named Carlpalooza?

Carl Pavano Finally Helps Yanks (No, Not Really)

On Saturday I heard a radio talkshow host joke that, in his upcoming ALDS start, Carl Pavano might finally help the Yankees in their quest to win a championship. He was right!Well, not exactly. Carl Pavano pitched very well against his former team, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 9 over 7 innings. Pavano did his part. He was no help to the Yankees. The help came from his teammates with all of their blunder-producing brain cramps.Do the Twins have a third base coach? If they do, why ...

Once Mocked in New York, Pavano Now Valued in Minnesota

by Ed PriceFiled under: Twins, Yankees, MLB Playoffs, American League Division SeriesMINNEAPOLIS -- People in New York must think we're talking about some other guy named Carl Pavano. And maybe we are. The Carl Pavano who will start for the Twins on Sunday in Game 3 of their American League Division Series against the Yankees doesn't sound like the one who spent four years on the Yankees. Or, more precisely, their disabled list. He's married now, with one child and another on the ...

Carl Pavano, Now an Important Baseball Player

Well yesterday was enough to make any Yankee fan vomit. Carl Pavano pitching in the most important start of the 2009 regular season and throwing on three days rest picks up the victory. Granted he was helped mightily by incredible run support but still, the words Pavano, win, three days left, and playoffs uttered in the same sentence are baffling to myself and any other Yankee fan.Carl Pavano has been with the Twins for less than 2 months and he's already won more meaningful games than he...

There's some tired aphorism about baseball being "a marathon, not a sprint," right? So when you take a sizable lead in that marathon from about the fourth mile to the last thousand feet, then trip all over yourself at the end, you're the Detroit Tigers. That's not entirely fair to the Tigers, who, it should also be noted, did the baseball equivalent of a kick earlier this week, taking two straight against the Minnesota Twins in the middle of a four-game set and pushing th...

After last nights loss the Twins fell back to a deficit of 2 games with just 5 games to be played. Another loss today would move the Tigers magic number to 2 games with just 4 to play. It's imperative that the Twins win today and set themselves up for an opportunity to tie the Tigers tomorrow, rather than giving the Tigers the opportunity to clinch. And thus today there is no man more important to the the Twins than Carl Pavano. Yes that Carl Pavano.Who would have thought that after wrapp...
