Why You Shouldn’t Even Consider Starting Chad Gaudin over A.J. Burnett on Short Rest

Although the readers on this site are pretty much unanimous in agreeing with the Yankees starting A.J. Burnett in Game 5 on three days rest instead of Chad Gaudin on something like 20 days rest, in other places the sentiment is a little more mixed. So I figured I should try and quantify it and see if there's any merit to starting Gaudin tonight.

As I posted about in this entry, Gaudin averaged an RA of 5.55 over six innings against the Phillies, and the Yankees lost 60.2% of the time whe...

No rest for the $160 million man: Sabathia to start Game 4

PHILADELPHIA — No matter what happens in tonight's Game 3, the Yankees have a definite plan for Game 4 of the World Series. CC Sabathia(notes) will get the start on Sunday night and New York manager Joe Girardi said that it's "a possibility" A.J. Burnett(notes) and Andy Pettitte(notes) could go on short rest for Games 5 and 6. The move keeps Chad Gaudin(notes) as the Yankees' long-relief specialist and out of the fourth spot in the team's rotation. As I headed ...

Rosenthal: Starting Gaudin Isn't A Bad Idea

Ken Rosenthal had another interesting article this morning, this time about whether CC Sabathia or Chad Gaudin should start game 4. If the Yankees lose game 3 he says that CC starts, end of story. I agree. But if the Yankees win game 3 he argues that starting Gaudin wouldn't be a bad idea. He mentions that "since 1999, teams using a starter on three days' rest against a fully rested counterpart in the postseason are 8-27". Although he did also point out that Sabathia proved t...

FoxSports.com - Rosenthal: Pitching Gaudin could be right move for Yankees

"I've got no chance against lefties," the Yankees' CC Sabathia said Friday, talking about his hitting, not his pitching.

Well, the Phillies are starting right-hander Joe Blanton in Game 4 and lefty Cliff Lee in Game 5, making the decision easy for Yankees manager Joe Girardi, right?

Uh, not exactly.

Girardi needs to figure out how to deploy Sabathia in his World Series rotation, not his lineup.

Sabathia will be a lock to start Game 4 on three days' rest if the Ya...

Gaudin and Game 4.

Since coming over from San Diego, Chad Gaudin has been a mini blessing of some kind when it came to a back end of the rotation guy. Sergio Mitre didn’t fit the bill and we all know about C.M. Wang’s injury problems this season. In 11 games with the Yankees, 6 of which were starts, Chad posted some decent numbers, and he was 2-0 with a 3.43ERA. Chad also struck out 34 guys, gave up 41 hits and allowed 21 walks in his 42 innings of duty. All in all, the guy did well and made a strong impression....

Why It May Not Matter If CC Or Gaudin Go In Game 4

I know I may be getting a little ahead of myself, but I'd like to bring up the fact that all this controversy over using a 3-man rotation and weather to start Chad Gaudin or CC Sabathia in Game 4 may not mean anything come the day of Game 4. Here's why: First of all, the Yankees are playing the first two games at Yankee Stadium, and they have CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett going up against Jon Lackey and Joe Saunders. Both of those matchups seem in the Yanks favor, and if the Yanks coul...

Sherman: Gaudin Would Be 4th Starter in ALCS

From Joel Sherman (hat-tip to River Ave. Blues):Should the Yankees advance to the ALCS, they are leaning heavily toward using Chad Gaudin rather than Joba Chamberlain as the Game 4 starter, The Post has learned. The Yankees would not finalize plans unless they beat Minnesota. But in informal planning sessions there is a growing consensus to keep Chamberlain in the pen throughout the playoffs.Sherman also says that if the Yankees were to sweep the Twins, they could go with three starters in the...

The Quiet Excellence of Chad Gaudin

Let's try and think back to July 31st if we can. The day of the trade deadline and the hysteria that accompanies it. The Yankees had a lead over the Sox but not a big one and they were looking for a fifth starter. Nobody really had any faith in Sergio Mitre (which has turned out to be justified) and Boston swung a big deal for Victor Martinez. The trade deadline slipped by and all the Yankees had to show for it was Jerry Hairston Jr. Cashman was talking about deals to be had on the waiver...
