The Tweak's the Thing

In my previous post, we discussed some creative tweaking of the Mets roster.

Let's try to put away all the diatribe aimed at the Wilpons, Minaya and Manuel and analyze just some of the various items that must be considered when creating a balanced major league roster. This includes a thorough understanding the farm system, available talent via trades and free agency (including compensation picks), and keeping within some budget constraints. All of us who run or manage businesses (except ...

Mets one of eight interested in Saito...

First I like to thank Mike Silva for referencing me in his post on this subject at NYBD and acknowledge the excellent argument he makes in regard to this subject. I will say this I have been a fan of Saito's for a few years and completed this post on him last off season, but Saito is 40 y/o, has had a history of injuries and would be expensive...But what the Mets learned in 2008 was that you need a back-up plan at closer in case of an injury, with J.J. Putz gone the Mets once again have u...

Could Calero set-up

Of all the areas that the Mets need to address, the most stable is the pen, if the Mets are confident that one of Bobby Parnell, Brain Stokes and Sean Green can step up to be the set-up man, then they may only need a left handed specialist. However, if they look outside of the organization for a set-up man a player they've been interested in before who has served as a set-up man maybe available at less then what most set-up men would cost. In 2007 when the Mets were trying to put together ...

Putzing Around

FanGraphs looks at the very short J.J. Putz era in Queens.
From the Mets’ standpoint, they sunk 6 million dollars and 7 players into acquiring Putz, Jeremy Reed, and Sean Green. The trade has produced 0.1 WAR from Putz, -0.7 WAR Reed, and -.1 WAR from Green. Unless Reed and Green somehow become productive major leaguers, [...]

Don't expect J.J. back...

Adam Rubin takes a first look at the Mets free agents and possible non-tender candidates. Rubin clarifies just how much J.J. will get paid if the Mets pick-up his option and while I'd like to have an elite closer as my set-up man, that's just too much money. I was a huge supporter of the Putz trade but it might have been the biggest bust of Omar's era, he gave up seven players for Sean Green...J.J. Putz’s option is for $9.1 million, not $8.6 million as it’s been stated in some pla...

The Mets seemed set up for a great 2009 season. Not the least of their strengths would be their bullpen, which was overhauled during the off season. We signed K-Rod, and then made the big trade for JJ Putz, and even got Sean Green back in that deal which looked so good at the time. Returning would be Perpetual [...]

On the surface, Sean Green has not had a very good season. An ERA just south of 5, initially wearing the same number as Aaron Heilman and several high profile late game meltdowns will create such a perception. However, as Sam pointed out earlier, things are not what they seem. H...

On the Bubble: Sean Green

I'm not one of those "break-up the core" fans, I believe with the caliber of our five top players ( Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Rodriguez) when healthy depending upon the players you surround them with, you are an automatic contender. In fact, my contention is that Omar's biggest failure is his inability to provide his core with a solid surrounding cast. The team is filled with either elite players or huge risk/reward type guys, Omar has never provided those second tier...

Elias : Mets Reliever Stat

Two Mets relievers didn't record an out in New York's loss to Tampa on Sunday: Bobby Parnell faced four batters and allowed a hit to each and Sean Green faced three batters and gave up three hits.

Over the last 60 years only one other team has had two relievers face three or more batters in one game and give up hits to each batter. Brian Shackleford and Todd Coffey did it for the Reds against the Brewers in 2005.

Some Myths Surrounding These Mets

Sean Green is bad or "the new Heilman": Green's 4.33 tRA is basically the same as Stokes' or Takahashi's and is above average. He's getting 56.2% GB, which isn't his usual absurd number, but is still great. His strikeout and walk % are in line with his career norms. The difference? He gave up 3 homers, the same number he gave up in all of 80 innings last year. The homeruns, coupled with some early struggles with command, made a few bad outings look like a bre...

The Big Hits Prove Elusive

Game 4: Marlins 5 - Mets 4

Tough one tonight. I guess some will harp on the fact that Maine allowed those two solo home runs, but I came away from his 5-inning stint fairly satisfied.

Hopefully it's something he could build on. If Maine returns to his form from two seasons ago the starting rotation falls into place much better.

The story tonight was the lack of the big hit again. Jerry Manuel did the right thing by putting so much emphasis on situational hitting this spring, but some o...

Too much like last year....

The biggest and best news of the night was that John Maine had a very good night. Maine struggled for most of the spring as he tried to figure out his post surgery mechanics and shake off the rust from not pitching since August of 2008. After Ollie had a miserable performance in his first outing the Mets rotation truly needed Maine to solidify his position. Maine pitched five innings allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out five. His only flaw was the solo homerun....The pe...
