Dwight Howard to voice talking turkey in “Free Birds” movie

It’s not often that I get the opportunity to call Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard, a talking turkey, but he will be lending his voice to a talking turkey in an upcoming animated motion picture.
The movie is called “Free Birds” which will be produced by Relativity/Reel FX and D-12 will voice a time traveling bird:
Howard plays Cold Turkey, one of the Wild Turkeys that Jake (voiced by Woody Harrelson) and Reggie (voiced by Owen Wilson) meet when they travel back in time to try and get turkeys off the Thanksgiving Day menu. Amy Poehler, George Takei, Dan Fogler, Colm Meaney, Eddie ‘Piolin’ Sotelo, Danny Carey, Josh Lawson and Keith David also lend their voices to the film.
Clearly, this will either be the best movie ever or the worst

In Bizarro World, where the Cardinals are always good

It was late when I conjured up this post, but to put things into context, this is the episode of Star Trek where Kirk and friends get sucked into a mirror universe and evil Spock has a goatee. The picture is particularly funny because George Takei, who is really funny and whom I love because of his internet presence, is so incredibly gay that his flirting with Uhura makes no sense whatsoever. That’s not to say that the St. Louis Cardinals are gay or some other euphemism; their continued awesomeness and stature as the model of the National League (and possibly all of baseball) makes little sense until you look at their philosophy closely.
I actually looked this up–as of end of games on 5/11, the Cardinals, at 23-12, have the best record in the majors. They just had back-to-back dominations of the surprising Colorado Rockies, the first by 2009 first-round pick Shelby Miller (who is scary good so far) and the second by annoyingly-awesome Adam Wainwright. Wainwright wasn’t even tech...

I’m on Facebook. I’d bet just about everyone reading this article is on Facebook. You know what I hate about Facebook? How about that “Timeline” thing? Why did they have to change everything? Oh, and just like many of you, I’ve got that handful of friends who are always having a battle over Facebook with their girlfriend or spouse – just annoying. How about the one that posted today “Time to clean the dishes, then make some iced tea.” Really? And, if I never see another post about farm games, or who’s playing Words with Friends, I’d be very happy.

An interview with Cecilia Tan

In this space last week, I wrote a post on the lack of openly gay players in baseball. The post stirred some discussion, among it a debate that lasted for a couple of days in an email group for the Baseball Bloggers Alliance. One of the people who spoke up, Cecilia Tan, runs blog a called Why I Like Baseball, has some experience going in clubhouses as a writer, and said it’s well-known to media that gay players are already in the sport. This caught my attention, and I wanted to explore the idea more, so I sought Tan out for an interview.

The following are excerpts of our near hour-long conversation via Skype on Tuesday evening:
To your knowledge, without naming any names, are there currently any gay players in Major League Baseball?
I’m trying to think now, kind of going through in my head of the people who are talked about and whatnot. Most of them are retired now, because the time when I was spending the most time in major league clubhouses was seven-eight years ago. But I have n...

Lazlo's Clicker - The Walking Dead Returns! Smash, Karmin Wows SNL

HighlightsThe Walking Dead returned last Sunday for the much anticipated continuation of its second season. Season 2 had gotten some criticism for being a bit slow moving in its first half, but it appears that complaint will be a thing of the past for the upcoming group of episodes. Hit the title/read more to continue reading. . .image source

When we last saw our band of survivors, they had just exterminated the contents of Hershel’s barn, over his objections. That part of the story resolved this week, as Hershel (Scott Wilson) sadly acknowledged he’d been wrong to think he could ever “cure” the walkers of being dead. Hardest hit by Sophie’s death were, naturally, her mother Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus), who had made a substantial investment of his own self-worth in finding Sophie. Shane (Jon Bernthal) is now openly hostile to pretty much everyone - he’s a timebomb that’s ticking more loudly than ever.On the new storyline front, Maggie (Lau

Dear Diary is Getting Commits in Pairs Again

Between National Signing Day and the Superbowl, we are in the last little oasis of The Footballs before the other things take over again. Then comes the long months before little bits of spring trickle in. So let's with the footballs! The footballs last year! The footballs this year! The footballs in four years!
Maize_in_spartyland put a lot of time into using this year's success as a predictor for next year's strengths of schedule across the conference, including early 2012 projections for each team. Michigan's schedule is up there but Nebraska and Penn State seem to have the toughest roads ahead, not that you have any sympathy for either of them.
CRex continued (2002-2005) and then concluded his year-by-year study of Minimum Playoff Size, with 2006 through 2011. He's got a 5-team playoff for 2006 that doesn't include Michigan, which highlights the problem with doing this with hindsight (ie including the bowl results) instead of looking at the pre-bowl situation and saying "THIS

Celebrity Apprentice: Meet the Most Connected Cast Yet

Celebrity Apprentice host Donald Trump has been touting this season’s crop of contestants as “the best cast we’ve ever had.” We’re not sure about “best,” but the cast certainly has an unbeatable following on social media.
The celebrities’ social networks could help them in challenges that require their teams to raise the most money to win. One Facebook status update or Twitter missive from a contestant could rally followers — even fellow celebrity followers — to donate money during one of those challenges.
Trump and NBC producers likely monitor each contestants’ online sentiment — so fan comments on social sites and message boards also could sway who Trump fires when the season begins Feb. 12. Producers might want to keep contestants that incite significant online buzz, which may translate to better TV ratings.

Christmas wishes for the 2012 Mets

Yesterday on Facebook, I shared George Takei’s photo of Confucius which said:
Forget about the past, you can’t change it.
Forget about the future, you can’t predict it
Forget about the present, I didn’t get you one.
But I have specific presents that I wish I could give out to the 2012 Mets which would make next season better than the previous three. Here’s what I think these guys really need.
Manny Acosta – A bounceback in his ground ball rate. Here are his GB% in the majors, starting with 2007 – 59.6, 53.4, 44.1, 41.7 and 37.1 last year. He’s got a career 46.2 GB% and a return to that number would do wonders for his bottom line.
Jason Bay – Last year he had brief streaks where he hit the cover off the ball followed by extended stretches where he could not buy a hit. In 2012, let’s give Bay some consistency, preferably at a much higher level than he’s shown overall in his two seasons with the Mets.
Tim Byrdak – It’s hard to come up with a gift for the guy who had everything go

Star Friends: George Takei Brings Peace to Sci-Fi Geek Feud

Each day, Mashable highlights one noteworthy YouTube video. Check out all our viral video picks.

George Takei just wants some peace. The actor, famous for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, wants to put an end to the YouTube wars between fans of his franchise and fans of Star Wars.
The long-standing sci-fi battle caught fire back in September, when Captain Kirk himself (William Shatner) made the argument for Trek‘s superiority in a YouTube interview. Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) responded on her own YouTube channel, arguing that Star Wars is clearly the best and that The Shat doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Never one to back down, Shatner addressed Fisher directly via a video that amped up the insults.
In an attempt to snuff out this feud once and for all, Takei implores both sides to fight together to address the real enemy: Twilight.
What are the merits of the three franchises? Is Twilight really awful enough to unite sci-fi fans against it — and how long can the T...
