Video: Fondly Remembering (and Enjoying the Irony of) ‘Chicks Dig The Long Ball’

While editing the latest piece by Zach Gropper, which will be published soon, I came across the following line in reference to Melky Cabrera’s underwhelming power numbers when compared to other NL MVP candidates:
And let’s not forget…chicks dig the long ball.
And, of course, I could not help but think back to the great Nike commercial that coined the phrase, which immediately became embedded in the lexicon of baseball.

I was going to just link to the video, but then I watched it and remembered how awesome it was. So it gets its own post.

As it used to every time I watched it on TV, Greg Maddux’s nasally whine of “Hey, we’ve got Cy Young winners over here!” still makes me laugh.
But so much else about how I view the rest of the commercial now has changed. I think you’ll agree that so many parts of it, in hindsight, are just delicious with irony.
And it starts from the beginning.
Tom Glavine asks, “How long are they going to worship this guy?” The answer is until about 2005 Tom, wh...

Important News: Dancing With The Stars Season 14 Has Its Sports Guys

The cast for season 14 of ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ was unveiled this morning, and to answer the questions you may be having so far:
1. Celebrities and tangentially-related people from the world of sports are once again participating, following in the footsteps of former winners like Emmitt Smith, Hines Ward and Shawn Johnson, as well as former hilariously awful losers like Evander Holyfield, Kenny Mayne and Ron Artest.
2. No, I can’t believe ‘Dancing With The Stars’ has 14 seasons, either. It started in 2005, so you’d think it’d have what, maybe seven? But reality shows have seasons corresponding to literal seasons so we’re up to 14, and ‘Survivor’ is about to start season 470.
This year’s sports folk include:
Donald Driver - Green Bay Packers wide receiver and the football player whose name sounds the most like a wrestling finish. I’m calling at least one instance of him running and jumping into the crowd at the end of a dance.
Martina Navratilova - Tennis great and four-t

The World Was A Much Better Place With MTV’s Rock N Jock Sports

Over the weekend, my Uproxxian colleague Danger Guerrero sent me a link to an old MTV Rock N Jock Softball clip, and it basically turned my afternoon into a complete waste. I didn’t get pushed into the YouTube wormhole as much as I willingly belly-flopped into the extensive search results for all things Rock N Jock, and I spent a good 4 or 5 hours reliving one of the most important pop cultural influences of my teenage years. After all, which child of the 90s didn’t desperately want to take a 10-point shot or a swing at the gold ball?
According to MTV’s website, the Rock N Jock franchise is alive and well, but that’s a bit misleading. Currently airing on MTV 2 on Saturday mornings, the latest version of Rock N Jock is a series is hosted by Todd Richards and “Dirty” as they travel to various extreme sports events to talk to athletes like Shaun White and Ryan Sheckler, which basically sounds like every show that airs on Fuel TV. Clearly, it’s a far cry from the days of the Bricklaye...
