Is this the beginning of the end for the Phillies?

For the Philadelphia Phillies to compete in the NL East with the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves, the general presumption was that starting pitching would have to shoulder the burden. Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels — arguably the best starting top three in MLB — would have to pitch at their best for the Phillies to contend. That became an even greater responsibility when general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. failed to add an impact hitter to the team's everyday lineup. But now that Halladay is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury (please pardon that pun in the first paragraph), where does that leave the Phillies' chances this season? Halladay was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation. But the fear is that this could be a longer-term injury for the right-hander, who will turn 36 years old next week. As my colleague Jaymes Langrehr detailed in an earlier post, Halladay has been demonstrating signs of concern for at least the p...

Entertainment Roundup: Obsessed with Cults?

Do you watch a lot of gruesome TV? I know that I do. Most all of the hit shows and movies have a lot of gore. BUT something that does scare me, is murderous cults. Groups of people who ban together to kidnap and kill.
I have been really enjoying The Following and am surprised at how it’s evolved. I hadn’t given it much hope after the first episode; other than, it had Kevin Bacon in it. Cult TV shows are the ‘in’ thing right now with several new shows premiering, including the cleverly named ‘Cult’.
The Following is about a serial killer who builds a cult while in prison. Each character that’s introduced is given a very real back story and motivation. Their characters eventually grow intto have deep psychological issues. Even the good characters have large flaws. Kevin Bacon has never been better! He carries this show with his even-tempered demeanor.
Have a strong stomach? Consider following this show.

5 awesome pictures of bacon stuff

There is no better way to start your day off than with bacon. That’s why we wanted to give you five awesome pictures of bacon that we found on Twitter.

Vanity license plates are usually pretty douchey unless of course it involves bacon. In that case it is awesome. I would also like to think that this person picked the color of their car to resemble some sort of hue of bacon. (H/T to Jenn Bates)

If you were to wrap your remote in bacon you’d probably never lose it. Also, bacon wrapped pinecones sounds like something they’d sell at Whole Foods. (H/T to Alfredo)

Truth. (H/T to John Pinette)

A picture of Kevin Bacon made only out of bacon. God I love America. (H/T to Gamma_Monkey)

Don’t we all. (H/T to Nick K)

Kevin Bacon Stars in New Fox Series ‘The Following’, Because He Can

We can never get enough Kevin Bacon, right? And here he is again in the new Fox series ‘The Following’. After a few years with some minor roles in some alright movies, we get to finally see him kick some ass every week starting January 21st.
The storyline surrounds the new reassignment of Mr. Ryan Hardy (Bacon) after 8 years of retirement. Apparently his old nemesis escaped prison and is on the prowl as one of the most infamous serial killers in the country. As a functioning alcoholic Hardy agrees to track this psychopath down before he adds another young woman to his kill count. But it seems like this archrival is a little complicated than it seems, because Hardy banged this guy’s wife! In perfect Kevin Bacon style he takes what he wants and there’s nothing you can do about it because he’s Kevin Bacon.
It’s been a while since I last saw the bacon sizzle. In ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ he was the dickhead David Lindhagen who was banging Julianne Moore, in ‘X-Men: First Class’ he was the a...

The Key to Making the Finals is Defense

I have always said that defense is the key to winning a championship. One of my favorite lines ever from a movie is from The Air Up There where Kevin Bacon is a college coach recruiting over in Africa and is teaching the natives basketball. He tells them, "Defense is more important than breathing." Every coach should tell his team that. In the interview above, Leandro Barbosa comes to the same conclusion but in different words.

“What I learned, when you play defense, everything comes automatic. Especially, on this team we have so many weapons, I don’t think we don’t have to worry about offense. To go to the championship, we have to play better defense. That’s what we’re looking for and what we’re working for.”
Barbosa has always been known for his offense, but has been getting some praise from Doc for his defense this season. Playing in Brazil and then for Mike D'Antoni in Phoenix, he never had to make defense a priority. But in Boston, he is learning that def...

Rumors Swirl Around More ACC Defections: Could BC, GT or UVA Be Next?

Those damn winds of change. On the heels of Rutgers and Maryland bolting conferences for the riches of the Big 10, now the college football universe is a twitter with more moves: Boston College, Georgia Tech and/or Virginia to the B1G. Like Kevin Bacon in Animal House, Syracuse fans are screaming, “Remain calm! All is well!” as chaos breaks out around us.

At 14 schools, obviously the Big 10 couldn’t poach three new schools. The conference would have to choose just two of the above group. But if Jim Delaney does toss an offer at any of these programs, they’re likely going to jump. And if that happens, then what becomes of the ACC? Does is start breaking apart like Pangea before SU even calls it home?
The $50 million exit fee was supposed to render the ACC immovable. How could any school justify paying that much money to hop leagues? But once Maryland decided to push forward anyway (based on Big 10 Network projected revenue), all bets were off. Would the Eagles, Jackets or Cavs come ...

A lot of times while you are sitting around with your friends, you begin some sort of trivia. One of the best games to play, that never seems to get old, is the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. For those of you who do not know how the game works, you are given an actors name and you then have to link that actor to Kevin Bacon using 6 or less co-stars. For example, if someone said Christian Bale this is what you would say, ideally.Got it? Good.Google has just done to the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon what Shazam has dones to the Name That Tune trivia. Made it incredibly easy to cheat. Using an algorithm, if you go to Google and type in any actors name followed by "Bacon Number", the site gives you they're ties to Kevin Bacon immediately. It's pretty fun trying to get a high number, I was only able to get a connection of 2 when I tried different people.Go ahead and give it a shot!

Facebook Makes the World Smaller, Shrinks 6 Degrees of Separation to 4

A theory stemming from an experiment by social psychologist Stanley Milgram in the 1960s claims every living person is connected to any other through only six friends. According to a recent study, Facebook reduces the six degrees of separation to only four, meaning the world’s largest social network makes the world even smaller (figuratively).
The study, a joint effort by Facebook and Università degli Studi di Milano, shows that the number of “hops” separating any two persons on Facebook is in fact smaller than six. According to the study, “99.6% of all pairs of users are connected by paths with 5 degrees (6 hops), 92% are connected by only four degrees (5 hops),” with the average “distance” between users getting smaller over time.

In popular culture, the best known implementation of the “six degrees of separation” theory is the Kevin Bacon game, which requires you to connect a Hollywood actor to Kevin Bacon, with actors being connected if they’ve been in a movie together. Th...
