Durham Bulls celebrate 25 years of 'Bull Durham'

If baseball is a religion, then Bull Durham has become its Bible. Baseball was a religion for Annie Savoy (played by Susan Sarandon) in the 1988 movie, and her narration -- along with the inherently quotable dialogue, baseball truisms and performances from other Hollywood stars like Tim Robbins and Kevin Costner, have made it one of the best sports movies ever.It focused on a real Class A club in Durham, N.C. -- the Durham Bulls. And back then, minor league teams were far from the popular, family-friendly entities they are today. When the movie premiered on June 15, 1988, all of a sudden, the concept of minor league baseball became much more popular, and attendance shot up nationwide. The Bulls had come and gone in Durham, but they were brought back for good in 1980 by then-owner Miles Wolff and led the Carolina League in attendance. They would continue to do that until the movie came out, and the Durham Athletic Park (DAP) -- where the movie was filmed, was just too small to hold the increasingly overflowing

Bernie Kosar filming scenes for Draft Day movie with Kevin Costner

We don’t know if it is anything more than a cameo, but Bernie Kosar tweeted that he’s at Cleveland Browns stadium with Kevin Costner.
At Browns Stadium! Trying to pretend to be an actor with Kevin C! Of course I am in over my head
— Bernie Kosar (@BernieKosarQB) May 28, 2013

I know many fans are sitting on pins and needles hoping that the movie is a respectable sports movie at minimum so that it can do the city and team proud. Getting the essence of the Browns is a very big part of that, so it is at least encouraging that they’d somehow include one of the quintessential Cleveland Browns of the last 30 years.
The movie starring Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner and featuring Houston Texans running back Arian Foster as a member of the Browns continues to film in and around Cleveland. It has a release date for sometime in 2014 and involves the quest for the number one draft pick.

Arian Foster lands role in new Kevin Costner film

Arian Foster spun his NFL domination to a bit part in CBS' hit show "Hawaii 5-0" earlier this year.
Now he's taken it a step further -- to the silver screen.
KTRK-TV in Houston reports the Texans' Pro Bowl running back has landed a role in Kevin Costner's upcoming big-budget film, "Draft Day."
Foster will play the part of fictional NFL draft prospect Ray Jennings, with Costner starring as Browns general manager Sonny Weaver, who "has the opportunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick."
The film will begin shooting during Thursday's draft and features several other NFLers, including DeMario Davis, James Brewer, Ramses Barden, Zoltan Mesko, and Stephen Hill. Various ESPN and NFL Network personalities -- Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock, Deion Sanders, Rich Eisen, Mel Kiper and Chris Berman -- will also make appearances.
Like his preparation for game days, Foster is taking his part seriously, reportedl...

Semi-comprehensive list of indispensable plot points for Kevin Costner’s “Draft Day” film about the Cleveland Browns

Matt Borcas is a Mentor, Ohio native who recently emerged from a field of 4,000 competitors to land a job writing about the NFL for ESPN’s Grantland. Matt’s Browns-centric column on the NFL Draft will run regularly here all the way up to draft weekend and through its immediate aftermath. Enjoy!
—————
In these days of pre-Draft angst, it’s comforting to know that a perfect, if fictional, Cleveland Browns Draft lies on the horizon of 2014 theatrical releases. For the uninitiated, the movie is called Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner as the Browns GM, Dennis Leary as the head coach, and Jennifer Garner as the GM’s love interest.

Co-screenwriter Rajiv Joseph described it thusly to Plain Dealer film critic Clint O’Connor:
It’s a movie that takes place in one day. It’s about the general manager of the Cleveland Browns. His professional and personal lives collide on the day of the NFL draft. He has these draft picks and he’s trying to save his team, which is going down the drain. Not a big

Denis Leary cast to play Cleveland Browns coach in Kevin Costner film

Remember the movie where Kevin Costner is set to play Cleveland Browns’ GM? Well, Mr. Costner apparently has found a coach.
Deadline.com is reporting that none other than Denis Leary has signed on to play the Browns’ coach in the movie being produced by Lionsgate.
This is good news if you ask me. The man from Worcester Mass (pronounced Wooster, of course) has developed into a pretty good actor over the years. We never could have known back in the days when he took roles in The Sandlot or The Ref that Leary would eventually star and produce one of the better TV shows in the past decade in the critically acclaimed Rescue Me.
Deadline has more details…
Leary will play Vince Penn, the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, who finds himself at odds with the team’s GM (Costner). It adds extra pressure as the GM attempts to make the right picks to lift the franchise through the NFL draft. There was a ticking clock on this casting, because part of the film will be shot at the April 25 dra...

Cleveland Browns will cooperate with Kevin Costner movie about team

Everyone’s all abuzz about the Kevin Costner movie news that has him playing the GM of the Cleveland Browns. I don’t think I’m breaking any rules by telling you that it’s been one of the most popular posts on this site the last few days in terms of traffic.
Now, there’s word that the Browns will be cooperative with the production. Nate Ulrich interviewed Alec Scheiner today and among the revelations in that Q&A to be posted later, Scheiner says of the production that “it’s good for the NFL. It’s good for the Browns. It’s good for Cleveland.”
Alec Scheiner is the Cleveland Browns President which means he’ll be one of the most influential members of the Browns organization. Most can’t stop thinking about Joe Banner, and for good reason, but ultimately Scheiner might have more influence over Browns fans’ interactions with the team than any other person in Berea.
Scheiner is responsible for many things from the newly formed analytics department, to even more things related to the bus

Browns beat out(?) Bills for Costner comedy

For as long as I have written for this blog, I have chronicled the Battle of Lake Erie between Cleveland and Buffalo for the right to be called America’s most tortured sports city. It turns out I wasn’t the only one.
“Draft Day” is a soon-to-be filmed sports comedy starring Kevin Costner as the general manager of a woebegone NFL franchise looking to turn things around. The two cities visited by director Ivan Reitman? Buffalo and Cleveland.
Apparently Buffalo was the frontrunner. But according to the Buffalo News, Cleveland’s film commission was able to offer the production more incentives, and thus the movie will be about the Browns rather than the Bills. So Buffalo can’t even win for losing. (If you click on the Buffalo News link, please be sure to scroll down to see the reader comments for a new lesson in massive civic depression).

However, it’s somewhat unclear what this decision does regarding the status of both cities in the race for America’s most tortured sports town.
Let’s ...

Browns beat out Bills for Kevin Costner movie

Two of the more snakebit franchises in the NFL went head to head off the field recently. But for once it was the Cleveland Browns that came out on top.

The Browns reportedly beat out the Buffalo Bills for the right to be the franchise in the Kevin Costner movie, Draft Day.

The movie, which was to depict Kevin Costner as a fictitious Buffalo Bills general manager trying to restore his team to past glory, will instead be shot in Cleveland, with the actor portraying the Cleveland Browns GM.

Like most reasons for anything related to business decisions, it all came down to the money. Shooting in Cleveland was cheaper than shooting in Buffalo therefore the Browns will get the nod.

“At the end of the day, it was a money thing. I think Mr. [Ivan] Reitman really wanted to shoot here, but it just came down to the cost factor. What we were told is that the Cleveland incentives were better,” said Tim Clark who heads the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission .

A Movie About The Buffalo Bills Will Be Filmed In Cleveland

“This town must be hot. They don’t need a large ad or even correct spelling!” Kevin Costner used to only be in sappy movies about baseball and golf, but it appears the well of fresh material about boring sports has run dry, so Costner is going to try his hand at acting in a movie about the NFL. In the upcoming “Draft Day”, Costner will play the general manager of the Buffalo Bills. The character has designs on returning the franchise to its former glory, so clearly he is not based on Buddy Nix. For whatever reason, the filmmakers were eager to shoot their movie in Buffalo. Unfortunately, economic realities being what they are, that won’t be happening. Last month, Reitman, the film’s director, and a location scout toured Ralph Wilson Stadium, as well as other local sites, and seemed excited about filming the movie in Buffalo, Clark said. But Lionsgate, the film’s distributor, thought otherwise despite efforts by state officials to sweeten the pot and keep the movie here. Instead, the...

Kevin Costner to star as Browns GM in new movie shooting in Cleveland

A story this morning in the Buffalo News is exciting for the city of Cleveland, and Browns fans. It appears Cleveland was chosen over Buffalo as the location for a new movie called “Draft Day” which will star Kevin Costner and be directed by Ivan Reitman.
“A furious fourth-quarter rally mounted by New York State officials – including a top aide to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo – has fallen short in keeping the film “Draft Day” in Buffalo.
The movie, which was to depict Kevin Costner as a fictitious Buffalo Bills general manager trying to restore his team to past glory, will now be shot in Cleveland instead, with the actor portraying the Cleveland Browns GM.
The big reason, said Tim Clark, who heads the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission, was economics.

Kevin Costner Donates to Baseball Bunch

ChambersThe dreams go beyond this field

Kevin Costner’s love of baseball doesn’t stop at the Field of Dreams. The famed movie star is spreading his love across the youth fields of South Dakota. According to the Associated Press, Kevin Costner donated a 1995 15-passenger Chevy Blue Bird bus to the Lead-Deadwood Baseball Association. The bus will transport baseball kids of multiple ages including, Little Leaguers, high schoolers, and American Legion and VFW teams.
