Most Inspirational Sports Movie Speeches: #4 Coach Herb Brooks Addresses Team in ‘Miracle’

Of all the sports movies out there based on fact no movie depicts a more epic event in history of sports than ‘Miracle‘. For such a dramatic game it’s not wonder it started with one of the best speeches of all-time.
Love the delivery by Kurt Russell here. What we find about these speeches that makes them so good is that they are brutally honest. Love the speech.

Cool Movie Villains

In cinema, we usually celebrate when the hero triumphs and shacks with the girl. Sometimes, however, movies are made by the vile bad guys who are the antagonists. Below is a list of some awesome villains who make us realize that “evil will always conquer because good is dumb (Spaceballs, 1987).”
Curly Bill Brocius and Ike Clanton, Tombstone
From the opening scene of the movie, Curly Bill, Ike, and the rest of the Cowboys gang are raising hell throughout the southwest. Although Kurt Russell and his baby blues eventually clean out the crew, you have to appreciate the whiskey drunk outlaws picking fights with whoever wants a piece. In perhaps the greatest supporting actor role of all-time, Val Kilmer plays the TB-infested, liquor chugging Doc Holliday, who doesn’t let something as pesky as a bender get in the way of killing bad guys.
The Joker, The Dark Knight
Heath Ledger helped us forgive him for his role in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ when he absolutely killed it as a deranged Joker against Christian Bale

Spitballing a Sabres intro video

Something that has been a popular point of contention these past few seasons is the mausoleum-esque atmosphere inside the F’N Center.

I don’t fancy myself to be a game presentation guru, I like to leave that expertise to Eric at 3rd Man In as he has a much better grasp on what it takes to put together a successful game presentation approach. However, I do enjoy spitballing ideas and seeing if they make any sense (this is how I come up with all of my brilliant patent pending ideas.

One thing that I’ve maintained for some time is that the atmosphere in that building does not rest solely on the shoulders of the game presentation staff. While some things they do could certainly be improved, I strongly believe that the fans carry a great deal of the responsibility. Most of the time it seems like the fans are just waiting for something bad to happen so they can jump down Tyler Myers’ throat or boo the players off the ice. Perhaps it is because of their overflowing #hockeyIQ that...

The most unrealistic sports movie scenes, part 2

Last year I posted a list of sports scenes from movies that were so patently absurd I felt they needed to be ranked to determine which was indeed the most unrealistic of all.Little did I know, the article would go viral. It seems people really like watching terrible movie depictions of athletic contests. And it seems people like to get really mad when a movie they like is included on such a list. After revisiting the comments section of that article, I realized (with the help of you, the reader) that there are just too many great scenes that I left out. I still stand by my original 10, but I decided to make a second list – a sequel, if you will – to shed light on some more awful sports scenes. Sorry Tom, but a man of your diminutive size playing volleyball – and having any level of success doing so – is simply too unrealistic not to highlight here.Ground RulesBefore you get started on this list, there are two things I need you to do.First, read/watch my original post – The 10...

15 Must See (Non-Sports) Movies of the ’80s

Recently, our managing editor Jerod posted a question on Facebook (where only the most crucial discussions take place) that deserved much contemplation and generated considerable debate:
The innocuous question that provided the spark for this post.
The discussion quickly gathered steam, as various other ’80s movies were thrown into the conversation.
Naturally, we moved the discussion to our MSF writers’ forum and discussed our favorites. That brought about the idea of making an aggregate list of “must-see” ’80s movies, taking each writer’s opinions and choices into account.

Since there is an entire generation of adults who weren’t alive to see these movies (geez, just typing that makes me feel old), this could serve as a guide to helping America’s youth strike cinematic gold.
I’ve done quite a bit of movie ranking myself on this site – including ranking the most unrealistic scenes from sports movies, the best scenes from sports movies, and the best baseball movies.
This list was cr...

Dad inspires/embarrasses son with improvised speech from ‘Miracle’ to get him ready for job interview (Video)

YouTube – To our beloved Matt,
This is just our way of wishing you the best of luck tomorrow and on all of your future adventures.
We love you!!
Herb Brooks would be proud, I guess? The father you see above did his best impersonation of the 1980 US Olympic Hockey coach (first done by Kurt Russell in the movie “Miracle”) to help inspire his son to land a job, and I’m guessing to get his butt off their couch and move the hell out. There’s nothing like comparing arguably the greatest sporting contest in history — which not only transcended the game of hockey but also worldwide politics — to an entry level copywriting gig. But, hey, to each his own. Mike Eruzione and Don Draper (clutch name drop, Dad) had to start somewhere. If this helped get our beloved Matt the position, more power to him.

Video: Behind the Scenes w/ U-23s + Bonus Footage

Ahead of Olympic qualifying the US U-23 squad took the field with a purpose last Wednesday night against Mexico. In doing so they brought the game to their rivals and were constantly on the front foot. After a Juan Agudelo header and a Mix Diskerud deflection the Yanks were up by two goals and that was plenty on a night where the Americans dominated both sides of the pitch en route to their 2-0 victory. Check out the awesome behind-the-scenes footage of the match courtesy of US Soccer. Caleb Porter's pre-game speech was epic, which prompted me to automatically youtube Miracle to listen to the "Herb Brooks" masterpiece prior to the battle vs. the Soviets (see below). Enjoy!
Herb Brooks, aka Kurt Russell, time!
I'm sorry but I had to include Al Pacino's pre-game pump-up jam from Any Given Sunday....it's a game of inches!

Touchback FINALLY brings time travel to discontent middle aged men who miss high school ...

Al Bundy, Jack Dundee from The Best of Times, Uncle Rico, and probably hundreds of thousands of middle aged men across this country all share a common problem: They wish they could either relive glory days playing high school football or perhaps alter history on the gridiron where glory might have escaped them.
It's a tired old Hollywood back-story, one born out of truth that for many, high school football is as close to that elusive glory that seems so distant to mundane middle age and middle class life.
Enter Touchback and its new trailer that debuted this week and has me shaking my head a bit. There are some things to like here with Kurt Russell in another sports role, footage where the NCAA and Ohio State has signed off on their trademarks being utilized (quite a rarity in film), and a handful of Hollywood cliches that seem to have been welded together to make what at first looks to be a pretty screwy yet uncharted take at the sports movie genre.
Below is the trailer. Yo...

32 years ago today...

Yup, today is the 32nd anniversary of the "Miracle On Ice" when the 1980 US men's Olympic hockey team (aka a bunch of college kids) took down a heavily favored U.S.S.R. team, considered to be a powerhouse on ice, in maybe the greatest upset in the history of sports.

But really this game was viewed as more than just that. It happened during the Cold War and was seen as kind of a matchup of good (USA) versus evil (Soviets), democracy versus communism, David vs. Goliath, etc.

The United States had four Massachusetts natives on the roster (all of whom attended Boston University at the time), most notably captain Mike Eruzione, who scored the game-winning goal in the third period.

I'll leave you with the epic speech by USA coach Herb Brooks (portrayed by Kurt Russell) in the movie adaptation of the event, "Miracle."

Who's Got the Best Look in Baseball?

You may have noticed some interesting looks during the 2011 post season. Craig Sager wore suits I wouldn't wear to a Halloween party, Dennis Eckersley thinks it's 1971, and countless others have purchased their hair at Morie's Wigs.
We would like to honor those who think their hair is still in style. We would like to salute those who believe their hair looks real!
