Mike Piazza and the Sept. 11 Homer

“long fly ball, deep centerfield…this one has a chance….HOME RUN! MIKE PIAZZA! AND THE METS LEAD 3-2!” – howie rose, 9/21/01
— Brian Erni (@brianerni) January 9, 2013
Plain and simple — this was the most amazing game I have ever been to.
I hate to say Mike Piazza lifted the fan base on his shoulders with one swing of the bat, but he did. I get chills thinking about it, from performances by Liza Minnelli and Diana Ross to a huge “Rudy!” chant at New York City’s Mayor.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the place during “God Bless America” and, although I was only 14, it is a night I will truly never forget.
Just one of many moments that proves that Mike Piazza should enter the Hall of Fame wearing a Mets’ cap.
What is your favorite Mike Piazza moment? Tell us in the comments section below.

Former Cardinals: Where are they now? Gary Gaetti

Many St. Louis Cardinals fans may best remember Gary Gaetti from his almost-three seasons with the club late in his two decade-long MLB playing career. It was the first three of the Tony La Russa years, 1996-1998, during which Gaetti was proclaimed “the pride of Centralia, Illinois” by broadcaster Mike Shannon.
I, however, most vividly recall “The G-Man” from his 1980’s heyday with Minnesota. Third baseman Gaetti, along with Kent Hrbek, Tom Brunansky and Kirby Puckett, formed the offensive core of the strong Twins clubs expertly managed by Tom Kelly.
Living in the Twin Cities area at the time, I can still remember the fan who often sat in the upper deck of the Metrodome, far above the baggie in right. He tirelessly held a sign proclaiming himself a member of the “Liza Minnelli Fan Club,” apparently in honor of the resemblance between the singer and the third baseman, set off by their prominent schnozzes.
Gaetti’s most famous time in the Cardinals spotlight unfortunately occurr...

Walt Frazier To Be Immortalized on Front of New York City Bus in Gray Line Hall of Fame

Walt Frazier is known for snazzy cars, but next week he will be on a bus. The man known as "Clyde" will have his likeness stamped on the front of a double-decker bus as the latest honoree in the Gray Line New York City Ride of Fame campaign. The former Knicks point guard will join Liza Minnelli, Joe Namath, Bernadette Peters, Roger Maris and a host of other great New Yorkers in being immortalized in six-wheeled, two-story form. A dedication will be held Wednesday, where Gray Line will reveal Frazier's signature open-top red double-decker bus that millions of sightseers will...

September 11th, 2001: When Sports Became Something More

At approximately 10 a.m. on September 11th, 2011, myself and a friend of mine were headed for Gym class at Pocono Mountain Intermediate School-North. We were in eighth grade, an innocent, ignorant 13 years old at that time with nothing more than girls and crappy music on our minds.
A girl in our class went rushing by, tears in her eyes and panic in her step. A nearby student told us, “A plane hit the Twin Towers and her uncle works there.”
We shrugged our shoulders and laughed. How stupid could someone be to fly into such a large building? If only we had known. Our school chose not to inform us of what had happened that morning, and televisions were banned from being turned on.
The events of that tragic day became more real when I got home from school. There in the doorway waited my parents with the type of fear I have only seen one other time in my life. They wrapped me in their arms and hugged me tight. Everything still made little sense to me. Why would someone attack us? Being ...

Robert Griffin III did what on the “Tonight Show” with Jay Leno last night???

Well, if you’re good at something might as well show it off.
Redskins QB Robert Griffin III was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, but he wasn’t showing off his masturbatory skills as WTOP 103.5, Washington’s only all-news radio station, would have you believe with the above headline. No, RG3 flashed his winning smile, “Go Catch Your Dream” custom socks with cape, and impressive beatbox skills to Leno and his audience.
And yes, WTOP has changed the headline to read “RGIII shows off his socks and his beat on Leno,” which is a tad more appropriate, not too mention family friendly. Probably just an overtired, overworked editor on the night shift who didn’t realize what exactly was being implied with the original racy headline. Or someone who didn’t give a sh*t because it was their last day on the job. Either explanation is plausible.
Here’s RG3 on Leno (the beatboxing comes near the end of the clip)…

Wait, he’s not only a talented football and basketball player who ca

Honor Chipper Jones? How about with a gift certificate to Hooters?

Sorry, Mets fans, for jinxing your team. (Well, not really, but I have to be nice!) Squawker Jon is right -- I am the Citi Field jinx! But when it comes to making dopey moves, your team doesn't need any help. Like the reported notion for the Mets planning to somehow honor Chipper (Larry) Jones in his last season. Why would you give a moment's tribute to somebody who mocked your team by naming his child Shea, and who has kicked your team's fannies ten ways to Tuesday? When I wrote on my Facebook page that the Mets were going to do something to commemorate Chipper's career, even Yankee fans were outraged. More than one said that it would be like the Bombers honoring David Ortiz for his career! You guys have one retired player number in 50 years, and you're going to do something to honor Chipper? Really? If your team does so, I strongly suggest giving him a gift certificate to Hooters (Google Chipper Jones and Hooters for the details!), coupled with a showing of &quot...

SNL Recap: Jonah Hill and The Shins Episode of Saturday Night Live

Jonah Hill hosted SNL this week and has been on a hot streak of late.
He was nominated for a Academy Award for best supporting actor in Moneyball, and his new movie, 21 Jumpstreet, currently has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Granted, that it only has 19 reviews, but that still is a great start.

Jonah Hill hosted Saturday Night Live for the second time on Saturday, March 10th.
The Shins were tonight’s musical guest. If you haven’t heard of The Shins before, like myself, they are an indie rock band from Albuquerque. This season SNL has booked more such bands. Sometimes it was a success like with Bon Iver and other times it was a mistake like with Lana Del Ray.
I was pretty excited for tonight’s episode. I have been a fan of Jonah Hill ever since he was trying to get laid in Superbad. He is a good comedy actor and I thought he did a solid job the last time he hosted.

My Favorite Things, 1962-2002

In observance of today’s Mets kids’ holiday party at Citi Field (an on-the-scene report from which will be coming later), I thought I’d dig out of the archives a little ditty I penned on Christmas Day 2002 and first published on Faith and Fear just prior to Christmas 2005. Many of the contemporary 2002 references are as dated as a good Jung Bong joke, but the overall vibe feels appropriate here in 2011 given that nine years ago I was trying to convince myself how much I still liked the Mets despite the Mets in those dreary days doing so many things I didn’t like.
After a spell of writing, I noticed I was no longer convincing myself, but celebrating all the things — the good, the bad, the Huskey — that made the Mets the Mets in my eyes and, really, all our eyes. Plenty more verses could have been added since to reflect the follies and foibles of the intervening decade (and, boy, do they keep on comin’), but I think the point is made pretty well by having mined the first forty-one yea...
