Entertainment Roundup: Here comes the movies!

Star Trek Into Darkness
Growing up with a Trekkie has always made me partial to the Star Trek franchise. But the new Star Trek series has been great so far and I can’t WAIT to see this movie. Khan is a great advisory and Benedict plays him to a ‘T’, and Kirk is up to his old tricks. On a side note because it’s hard to tell from the trailers, I do hope Uhura has a larger role.
Monsters University
Monsters Inc was one of Pixar’s best movies. It was completely original, and was cast really well. Sully is my favorite, and it looks like he is up to a lot of college antics. It’s been several years since the first Monsters came out, but I think the original movie’s audience will be back in full force.
World War Z
I have not read this book, but have heard it’s great. I always love me a good Brad Pitt movie and have been enjoying the Zombie craze; I think this movie will shine as a great apocalyptic story. The only concerning sign is the multiple reshoots that this movie has been through.

Westboro Baptist Church Set To Put On Its Best Picketing Sundress

The Westboro Baptist Church, of picketing everything fame, has decided that Ole Miss deserves a picketing for something related to a football idol and the movie "The Blind Side". It's unclear exactly why they're targeting Ole Miss because the person who updates the schedule on their website writes as though they've been trapped in the purple reading comprehension group since the first grade (only 12 more stars until orange!).

	Per their official schedule:

"Another idol of Doomed USA is Ole Miss, your football idol, featured in movie, “The Blind Side.”

So, as I understand it, Ole Miss is another idol, but THE football idol of Doomed USA (sounds like a scary place!). ABOUT TIME WE WERE NUMBER ONE IN SOMETHING.

However, to Westboro's credit, they are correct in that Ole Miss was featured in "The Blind Side" in the form of an Ed Orgeron recruiting pitch and Tim McGraw and Sandra Bullock occasionally saying "Ole Miss." ...

Monday Random Questions with Mark Strotman and Senator Giggity

Random questions is back. I don't have a good name for the series outside of random questions. If you have an idea, please let me know and I'll put it to good use. If you aren't aware, this series is me asking people a handful of random questions that I think of at the time. That's pretty much it. Some are sports related. Most are not.

This week I'm joined by Mark Strotman from the Marquette blog Paint Touches and Comcast SportsNet and the one and only Senator Giggity. That is actually his real name. He doesn't write anywhere, but he is one of the funnier people on twitter. He should write someone.

I asked these men about a wide number of topics such as tattoos, Jason Collins coverage, how much Napoleon Dynamite sucked, the playoffs and being drunk. Good times were had by all. Questions are in bold. Senator Giggity is SG, Mark is PT and my answers are BB. Enjoy.

The big news in the sports world was Jason Collins coming out. Since we all probab...

Michael Oher is tired of answering questions about The Blind Side

With all the storylines heading into Super Bowl XLVII, it's incredible to consider the subject of perhaps the most notable story in popular culture in this game is an afterthought. Ravens tackle Michael Oher's life story was told in the critically acclaimed film The Blind Side. Sandra Bullock won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Oher's adopted mother Leigh Anne Tuohy. The movie collected over $300 million dollars at the box office. And yet, the film's central protagonist Michael Oher remains distant from the movie about his life. At Super Bowl Media Day, Oher spoke out about his weariness of being attached to The Blind Side to the Baltimore Sun...

"I'm tired of the movie," Oher said. "I'm here to play football. Football is what got me here and the movie, it wasn’t me. I always knew how to play football growing up. It was different personalities, stuff like that. Playing football is what got me to this point.

Ravens Tackle Michael Oher ‘Tired’ of Being Asked About ‘The Blind Side’

On Super Bowl media day, players are often pestered to answer nearly identical questions by the throngs of reporters on hand, many of whom hail from places around the world and no not regularly cover the teams. This was especially frustrating for Ravens tackle Michael Oher, because he has been fielding the same questions for six years. Oher was the star of Michael Lewis‘ best-selling book The Blind Side, which chronicles Oher’s life and football career through high school, culminating in him being offered a scholarship by the University of Mississippi. The book was later adapted into a movie starring Sandra Bullock – an adaptation that Oher has repeatedly denounced as an unrealistic portrayal of his athletic ability. The lineman was asked about the film on Tuesday, and he made it clear that it is not a topic he wishes to discuss. “I’m tired of the movie,” Oher told reporters. “I’m here to play football. Football is what got me here and the movie, it wasn’t me.
Trying to Avoid the Obvious Joke

Look at those innocent eyes that have never seen the other side of the 50 yard line…PAAAAAWWWWLLL
If I was a complete and total hack* I would make some reference to this product smelling exactly like a corn dog or similar corn dog-like by-products…but, if you read this site on the regular, you know that I’d never do that because only the most high-brow, intelligently mined nuggets of comedy gold show up around here. That being the case, I’ve decided to go with a slight “Love Potion No. 9″ reference instead (you know, the movie with pre- nose job Sandra Bullock) and propose that wearing this cologne, which smells like Les Miles natural aroma and fresh grass clippings, will make you irresistible to top blue chip 5 star recruits, multiple conference and national championships, and hoardes of ravenous LSU co-eds…and, given that last group, herpes, probably lots of herpes.
See, wasn’t that better.

Nebraska LT Tyler Moore Leaves Team

Sophomore LT Tyler Moore has left the Husker’s team for personal reasons. Moore started four games in 2011 for Nebraska and played in nine total. The 6′ 6″ 305 pound tackle was the front runner for the starting left tackle position.
After Nebraska’s Saturday practice coach Bo Pelini said, “I’m not exactly sure if that’s going to be permanent, or not permanent.” Pelini said, Moore was “working through some things personally”. He added Moore is welcome to rejoin the Huskers.
You don’t have to be Sandra Bullock to know that losing your starting left tackle less than a month before the season begins is not a good thing. Who will be covering Taylor Martinez’ blind side? We may not know until the Huskers take the field against Southern Miss on September 1.

The Blind Side

Before he was the head coach at Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze was most famous for being the high school coach of Michael Oher in the major motion picture "The Blind Side". Not many of us can say we were once portrayed in a movie starring Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw, but Freeze can, and the coach admits that he uses the movie connection in recruiting. Unfortunately, and I'm quite confident this was done for "story" purposes by the film writers, in the movie Leigh Anne Tuohy appears to know more about coaching than Freeze. The best Freeze scene I remember from the movie is where she interrupts practice to tell Oher how to protect the quarterback. But whatever. At least Freeze will always have this moment with Houston Nutt:

Ed Cunningham, ESPN analyst and former Washington Huskies center, wins Oscar for best documentary

Football players and the Academy Awards aren't exactly foreign to each other these days, especially considering how The Blind Side earned a Best Picture nomination in 2009 (and saw Sandra Bullock take home the Oscar for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role), but it's more unusual to see a real gridiron veteran recognized for work behind the scenes. That's the case with former Washington Huskies center and current ESPN/ABC analyst Ed Cunningham. Cunningham served as a producer on the high school football documentary Undefeated, which picked up the Oscar for best documentary Sunday night. It's just the latest accolade for Cunningham's documentary work (he's served as a producer on such documentaries as King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, New York Doll and Make Believe), and it's fitting considering that Undefeated saw him make a rare return to gridiron subjects. As Cunningham told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, he normally tries to avoid foo...

Cause You Win Some and Lose Some (Contests), Sandra Bullock: A Few Thank Yous.

Some thank yous are in order. First up, Derek from Tomahawk Chopping - Cardboard & More! held a contest, and I was one of a number of winners. Many thanks Derek (and many more to follow)!Next, Brian from 30-Year-Old Cardboard held a contest, and the randomizer spit my name out. My prize is the below relic. Thanks for the great contests and the awesome prize Brian!Next up, my third contest success from the great Andrew over at Sports Card Info. He holds at least a contest a week, and I was fortunate enough to pick up this sweet on-card auto of Flyers' defenseman Erik Gustafsson.
