20 Things I Wish I’d Known When I Was 30 By Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

When Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was thirty, he was living the American dream. Leading scorer in the NBA, leading rebounder, leading blocker, Most Valuable Player, All-Star. But success can be as blinding as Bill Walton’s finger in the eye when battling for a rebound. He made mistakes. Plenty of them. In fact, sometimes he wishes he could climb into a time machine and go back to shake some sense into that thirty-year-old version of himself. This is the he would give him, if it was possible.
1. Be more outgoing. My shyness and introversion from those days still haunt me. Fans felt offended, reporters insulted. That was never my intention. When you’re on the public stage every day of your life, people think that you crave attention. For me, it was the opposite. I loved to play basketball, and was tremendously gratified that so many fans appreciated my game. But when I was off the court, I felt uncomfortable with attention. I rarely partied or attended celebrity bashes. On the flights to games...

Dan Gilbert and the Community

Here’s another gem from the ninth circle of Hell aka the Horseshoe Casino marketing department, who wants the folks around E105th and St. Clair — in a neighborhood where 47% of the households have an annual income under $19K — to know that it only takes one roll to WIN BIG. So have another. And another. And why not just one more small gamble, because it only takes one.

In other Dan Gilbert news, he tweeted out a link this week to a post at a Detroit advertising agency’s blog. “I loved this column,” Gilbert said.

Naturally, this column is about how all of Michigan’s problems would be solved if only low level employees of large landowners would do more work than what they’re paid for. That’s called “awesomeness,” according to the blog post, which is (for real) titled, ”Right To Work? How About ‘Right To Awesomeness’?”
Gilbert is also upset with actor Sean Penn this week, apparently because Penn used Detroit’s poverty problem as a reference point with respect to the devastatio

2013 Movie Preview: Part 1

2012 gave us some stellar cinematic experiences, from blockbusters like ‘The Avengers,’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ to kid-friendly successes like ‘Brave,’ and ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ to heartwarming and hilarious dramedies like ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’
With 2013 just on the horizon (Mayans be damned!), it’s time to look ahead and preview some of the movies we’re most looking forward to.

Gangster Squad — January 11

‘Gangster Squad’ was supposed to drop at the tail end of the summer, but a controversial scene dealing with a movie theater shooting called for re-shoots and re-edits in the wake of the Colorado theater massacre, which pushed this promising crime flick to January. You’ve got Ryan Gosling teaming up with Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, and a handful of other fine actors as cops who go off the books to take on a power-hungry Sean Penn, playing the ruthless gangster Mickey Cohen in 1940s LA. Oh, and it’s got Emma Stone. Need I say more?

The story of LA mobster Mickey Cohen comes to life in “Gangster Squad”

Coming to theaters on January 11, 2013, “Gangster Squad” entails a chronicle of how mobster Mickey Cohen brought his East coast street crime to the city of angels. The movie is under the direction of Ruben Fleischer ( Fantasy Factory, Rob & Big) and will include a cast of Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, and Nick Nolte.
Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) was born in 1913 in Brooklyn, New York into a jewish family who emigrated from Kiev, Ukraine. Starting off as a young boy selling newspapers, Cohen soon became involved in illegally delivering alcohol to local customers from his older brother’s gin mill. He eventually got arrested but luckily avoided charges due to his family connections. He later moved on to illegal prize fighting and eventually turned pro where he began training in the west coast. Bouncing around dealing with illegal gambling and sports booking in Chicago, Cleveland, and Vegas he made a name for himself as an outgoing trigger happy 5′ 5” ticking time b...

Trailer: ‘Gangster Squad’

Ruben Fleischer, director of Zombieland, is bringing you what looks like a badass mafia flick this fall with his new film, ‘Gangster Squad.’ With an awesome cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, and Giovanni Ribisi, this movie will come with some pretty high expectations.
The film is based on the true story of the LAPD’s fight to keep East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s, with Gosling, Brolin, Nolte, and Ribisi part of the police department’s “Gangster Squad” assigned to take out a top level organized crime leader (Penn)…and do it “off the books.”
Based off the trailer, the film looks pretty badass. If it lives up to expectations, it could propel Fleischer, who also produced MTV’s ‘Rob & Big’ and ‘Fantasy Factory,’ and his directing career to another level.

15 Must See (Non-Sports) Movies of the ’80s

Recently, our managing editor Jerod posted a question on Facebook (where only the most crucial discussions take place) that deserved much contemplation and generated considerable debate:
The innocuous question that provided the spark for this post.
The discussion quickly gathered steam, as various other ’80s movies were thrown into the conversation.
Naturally, we moved the discussion to our MSF writers’ forum and discussed our favorites. That brought about the idea of making an aggregate list of “must-see” ’80s movies, taking each writer’s opinions and choices into account.

Since there is an entire generation of adults who weren’t alive to see these movies (geez, just typing that makes me feel old), this could serve as a guide to helping America’s youth strike cinematic gold.
I’ve done quite a bit of movie ranking myself on this site – including ranking the most unrealistic scenes from sports movies, the best scenes from sports movies, and the best baseball movies.
This list was cr...

Sean Payton’s appeal shows his immaturity

Dead Man Walking. The 1995 drama film starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon tried its best to garner sympathy for death row inmates. Of course, in many ways it worked backwards since a good two thirds of the film is Sarandon, a nun, trying her best to gain an appeal for a convicted killer.
Suddenly the New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton comes to mind when watching reruns of this misguided tear-jerker. While the stakes may not be as high as murder and lethal injection, the appeals filed show that Payton will not own up to his crimes and will try to pull a fast one to get paid. Yes, Payton is losing out on a small fortune with his unpaid suspension, but this is the closest an on field array of incidents has come to violent crime in the history of football. This is so much bigger than Spygate. Spygate used video cameras to gain an upper-hand, the New Orleans Saints used weapons.
Weapons? You ask? Anyone that has ever donned a helmet and pads knows very well the type of d...

What’s The Fuss About Tim Thomas’ Political Statement?

Athletes always seem to cause a stir when they make a political statement. Hollywood can freely express their views and people will nary say a word. Open statements criticizing the Iraqi war didn’t prevent Sean Penn from winning Academy Awards for his roles in “Mystic River” and “Milk.” Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas, however, has quickly become the object of scorn because of his snub of his team’s visit to the White House. The media has gone out of their way since the incident to paint Thomas in the worst light. Some also believe it very well may cost him his position with the team. I find it hypocritical, considering the media often criticizes athletes for living a sheltered life. Why would they criticize Thomas for his views when it’s quite innocuous in the scheme of things?
Is the outcry because Thomas expressed his beliefs or the political leaning of said beliefs? Thomas publically blasted the Federal Government and he has openly admitted he and his wife would love to have dinner...

The 17th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards are set to air this Thursday, January 12, on VH1 and multiple world champion boxer, Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero has been invited. Guerrero will join the red carpet walk with mega-movies stars like Leonardo Dicaprio, George Clooney and Brad Pitt to name a few. Founded in 1995, the BFCA presents its Critics' Choice Movie Awards each year to honor the finest achievements in filmmaking. A portion of the proceeds from the awards presentation ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel is donated to Sean Penn's J/P HRO Haitian Relief Organization.
"It's going to be fantastic attending the CCRA because this is one of the biggest events in Hollywood and a predictor to the Oscars. The movie stars that attend this event are the people that bring joy to our lives through movies that we watch with our families. I'm pleased that a portion of the proceeds will go to the J/P HRO Haitian Relief Organization, a charity that Sean

T.A.H. On Sabbatical

(http://pastorcarrieinhaiti2012.blogspot.com)Yeah, we know we just got back from a holiday vacation, but this is a little different. T.A.H.’s editor and publisher are headed off to Haiti on a mission trip with the local Rotary Club and the Presbyterian Church. (The link under the photo takes you to Pastor Carrie's blog about the trip.)We are going to Terrier Rouge, Haiti to help a school and an orphanage there.Evidently, Sean Penn can’t do it all himself and really does take a village. Why not join the village? So we have gotten all our vaccinations, taken our malaria pills and packed according to the instructions of former missionaries....What could possibly go wrong?Terrier Rouge is in northeast Haiti and a good poke from the earthquake devastated areas around Port Au Prince, but it still remains one of the poorest regions in the world. Unemployment is at a staggering 85% and simple things like utilities, while available in some places, are still hard to come by...Don't stand around waiting
