30 Rock’s 20 greatest sports moments

In a few months, I’m going to sink into depression. It won’t be because the Miami Dolphins will be 0 and whatever and it won’t have anything to do with the Orlando Magic embarking on a 4-win season. My misery will stem from 30 Rock airing its final episode and NBC turning its back on one of the greatest comedies in TV history in favor of low hanging fruit like Guys with Kids. But that’s what happens when only a few million people tune in. The Two and a Half Mens of this world win.
One of the many – many, many, many – reasons that I love 30 Rock and consider it in the same category as Seinfeld and Cheers is because of the writing and the lines that most people don’t even hear. With 30 Rock, there’s always a main joke, but beneath that first layer is another layer and another layer, which makes each episode as re-watchable as the next. And within those jokes and layers are some of the smartest and funniest sports jokes that have ever been written for a sitcom.
I actually starte...

Transfer Deadline Day Will Be As Exciting As Ever

Transfer Deadline Day Will Be As Exciting As Ever - originally posted on Soccerlens.comIf there’s anything that reflects what’s good and bad about modern football, on and off the pitch, it’s the last day of the transfer window.
Twice a year, on the last day of August and January, we see many of the worst things in football today. Clubs neglecting good sense to at the last minute buy average players at inflated prices. The 24/7 football media going even by it standards into a state of overdrive.
Fans and pundits making split second judgments on players they’ve barely seen. Fake ‘ITK’ Twitter accounts trying to out-**** each other. Jim White doing the late shift on Sky Sports News with his eyes on stalks. In terms of action and possible amphetamine use Jim White’s presenting stint on deadline day is the broadcasting equivalent of an early Jesus and Mary Chain gig.
The entire spectacle is in many ways an exhibition in stupidity. Clubs who’ve had the entire summer to decide what player...

Viewer’s guide to reading about watching the Olympics

I must make a confession. (Yes, I understand I do not have my lawyer or rabbi present.) I enjoy watching the Olympics, even though events are tape-delayed by eight hours and I have to be subjected to hokey montages hell-bent on inspiring good, old-fashioned jingoism. In fact, to coincide with the spirit of the Olympic games’ broadcast, this column, which probably should have come about a week-and-a-half ago, is tape delayed. Though, I’m sure my loyal readership — all three of you — probably doesn’t mind too much.
While my own personal Olympic ambitions were dashed at some point shortly after my conception, I can honestly say I am an unabashed fan of the Games. Everything from rooting on the poor schlub representing a tiny enclave once unsuccessfully invaded by the United States — take your pick — or getting by daily dose of patter from the NBC, the Network of Bob Costas. By the way, speaking of Costas, the man looks as if he never ages, leading me to believe he is some otherworldly ...

No Ordinary Joe II:

From the NECBL and Don Leypoldt
It’s time to set the record straight. Arizona State junior infielder Joey DeMichele came from Arcadia High School in Phoenix, about 10 minutes from the Sun Devils’ ballpark.

So he did not come from “out of nowhere.”

Former Keene Swamp Bat DeMichele was the Pac-10’s breakout star in 2011. The freshman who had just nine at bats in 2010 ledhis conference in batting average (.368), slugging percentage (.663), triples (7) and total bases (128). His nine homers led Arizona State; he also averaged an RBI per game.

Nine at bats in 2010.

First Team ABCA All-American in 2011.

A breakout like Susan Boyle in the game of Denny Doyle.

“It was more about getting opportunities in my sophomore year. During my freshman year, I didn’t have much of an opportunity at all and then I got some chances,” explained DeMichele. “I didn’t even start on Opening Day 2011 so I had to force my way into the lineup anyway I could. Once I di...

iTunes Store and Newsletter Features... (Toronto Mike)

I realize there's been a lot of Humble and Fred Radio podcast content lately, but this project is only only a couple of weeks old and has already been one hulluva ride.
If you got your iTunes newsletter this month, you saw our little podcast featured alongside Susan Boyle and Deadwood. (insert joke here) Here's a screen cap.

And, the Humble and Fred Radio podcast is also featured on the main podcast page for iTunes. Here's how that looks. Click to embiggen.

Meanwhile, the boys have been all over the msm, appearing on Canada AM this morning and the new Global morning show last week. Not to mention Prime Time Sports and the Toronto Star... like I said, it's been a fun ride.
And if you actually want to read more about this project, as well as other Humble and Fred stuff from the past, visit http://www.torontomike.com/humble_howard/.
