But in recent years, “Lights Out” hasn’t been very exciting. Yesterday, Merriman acknowledged this fact and announced that he would be turning the lights out on his career. San Diego drafted Merriman with the 12th overall pick in the 2005 draft. Merriman started off his career with three great years but then fell off. The linebacker’s best year in the league was in 2006 when in just 12 games he totaled 17 sacks, 1 interception, 4 forced fumbles, and 49 tackles. In 2007, Merriman had another good season when he totaled 12.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 54 tackles in 15 games. But after 2007, “Lights Out” didn’t really play at all. Over the last five years, Merriman has played in 32 games and totaled 6 sacks, zero forced fumbles, and only 55 tackles. Sure, it’s another one of those “why now? why not five years ago?” type of deals, but for how fleeting Merriman’s time of being productive in the NFL was, he was indeed a memorable figure. Be it his signature “Lights Out” sack dance, the alleged fights and lawsuits with Tila Tequila, the time he got a Powerade logo shaved into the side of his head, or just the fact that Merriman once swore that he would destroy the elderly and the mentally challenged if that’s what it took to win, Gigantosaur had his moments. The outside linebacker who burst onto the NFL scene with the Chargers in his first three seasons announced his retirement on Tuesday at the age of 28, ending his career far short of the Canton-bound trajectory with which it took off. Merriman was the 2005 Rookie of the Year with 10 sacks, then finished with 17 in 2006 despite getting dinged four games by the NFL for steroid use. Radar Online reports that 495 Productions, which created the popular MTV show “Jersey Shore,” is giving a reality show to ex-Bengals cheerleader Sarah Jones. Jones admitted to having sex with her then-underage student while she was a high school teacher. She pleaded guilty to lesser charges on Oct. 8 and avoided jail time as part of a plea deal. The shooting occurred sometime before 10 a.m. PT this morning at his Oceanside CA home.  The local emergency dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call about 10 a.m. from Seau’s housekeeper reporting the shooting. Seau, who was one of the greatest linebackers to ever play the game and a surefire Pro Football Hall of Fame member, has battled suicide demons in his past.  Once he retired his life seemed to change drastically without football in it, as he appeared several times in tabloid news stories in print and on TV.  Nearly two years ago he was accused of assault by Reality TV entertainer Tila Tequila and then he drove his car off of a cliff just hours after being arrested on those charges.
