Athletes back campaign vs. hunger

A group of Olympic athletes from around the world on Sunday urged international leaders to tackle child malnutrition rates in poor countries.

Olympians including Ethiopian runner Tirunesh Dibaba and British long jumper Greg Rutherford, both gold medal winners at the London Games, were among athletes who wrote an open letter to Prime Minister David Cameron ahead of a so-called ''hunger summit'' at the leader's residence in No. 10 Downing Street.

The letter urged Cameron to prioritize a push against malnutrition when Britain takes the presidency of the G8 next year.

Cameron later told the summit that he is ''determined'' that Britain help change malnutrition rates.

''While people around the planet have been enjoying and competing in these Games, there's another world where children don't have enough to eat and never get the start in life they deserve,'' he said. ''We've a responsibility to tackle this.''

Haile Gebrselassie forced to rethink farewell

Haile Gebrselassie was hoping for a farewell race and one last shot at an Olympic gold medal in the marathon.

The 39-year-old distance running great and former world record-holder won't get the chance after failing to make Ethiopia's team, denying him a swan song at the London Games.

Gebrselassie says he is unlikely to run the marathon at next year's world championships and this Olympics was the plan for his goodbye. He says he'll have to rethink how and when he bows out.

Gebrselassie broke his own marathon world record in 2008 at 35 and won two Olympic titles in the 10,000 meters.

He also failed to qualify for the 10,000 in London. He joked Friday that he was still hoping to be a late addition to Sunday's marathon field.

Gebrselassie fails to qualify for 10,000 in London

Haile Gebrselassie failed to qualify for the 10,000 meters at the London Games on Sunday, finishing outside the top two of the Ethiopian qualifiers at the FBK Games.

Gebrselassie had already failed to make it among the marathon qualifiers and had a fleeting hope he could go through in the 10,000, where he won gold in 1996 and 2000.

Tariku Bekele won Sunday's race. Brother Kenenisa Bekele, the 2004 and `08 Olympic champion, will likely get the Ethiopian wild card for London.

In the 400, 18-year-old Santos Luguelin of the Dominican Republic set the second-best time of the season, with 44.45 seconds, trailing only American LaShawn Merritt. On Sunday, he beat Martyn Rooney of Britain.

Kellie Wells won the 100 hurdles in 12.81 seconds, edging U.S. compatriot Lolo Jones.

Gebrselassie beats Radcliffe in half-marathon race

Haile Gebrselassie won a special half-marathon event ahead of the Vienna City Marathon Sunday after chasing Paula Radcliffe, who started the race 7 minutes, 52 seconds earlier.

The Ethiopian great overtook Radcliffe after 9.5 miles and finished in an unofficial time of 1 hour, 52 seconds.

Radcliffe, who timed 1:12:03, planned to use the exhibition event as preparation for the Olympics in London in August. Her training was interrupted by bronchitis over the past two weeks.

Radcliffe's head start of 7:52 equaled the difference between her and Gebrselassie's personal bests over the 13.1-mile distance.

Radcliffe chased by Gebrselassie at half marathon

Paula Radcliffe will get a head start of 7 minutes, 52 seconds on the Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie at a special half-marathon event in Vienna on Sunday.

Radcliffe's advantage equals the difference between their personal bests over the 13.1-mile distance. It's her first race of the year, four months before the London Olympic marathon.

''I hope to be able to produce a good solid run and I would be happy with a time of sub 70 minutes,'' Radcliffe said Friday. ''I hope it does not come to a sprint in the final 100 meters - in this case I know on who my money would be.''

Radcliffe has not raced since qualifying for the Olympics, coming third in the Berlin marathon in September.

The 38-year-old Briton said, who is seeking her first Olympic medal in London, said her training has been interrupted by an illness.

''I had a difficult past two weeks because of a bronchitis,'' Radcliffe said. ''There were times when I thought I would not be able to

Column: Should Gebrselassie say goodbye?

For two decades, Haile Gebrselassie enchanted fans of running with his mastery of the art.

Because he is such a rare athlete, because of his infectious joie de vivre and because he is an all-around admirable guy, it's now somewhat stressful to see him age. The wear and tear of a life that started on a poor, Ethiopian farm are making the double Olympic champion and four-time world champion in the 10,000 meters look increasingly mortal.

The world records in the marathon, 5,000 and 10,000 that once were his belong now to others. With his 39th birthday looming in April, Gebrselassie will never get them back. His ambition of competing at a fifth Olympic Games, in London this July, appears to be fading. His most recent marathon wasn't close to good enough to warrant a place on Ethiopia's Olympic team.

Which all begs the question: Should Gebrselassie retire? It's not that ''The Emperor'' of long-distance running suddenly has no clothes. But could he undermine his reputation by comp
