Falcons Draft Picks Choose Their Numbers

Jay Adams over at AtlantaFalcons.com just updated the site with all eight of the new draft picks new jersey numbers.

You probably already know that number one draft pick Desmond Trufant made the bold decision to go with #21. I guess he's not nervous of trying to step into the shoes of one Chris Owens. Oh, what's that? That was also Deion Sanders number? Hmmmm...Well hopefully Trufant doesn't have a few great years with the organization and then fly the coop.

Anyway...here are the rest of the numbers and some recent or notable players that have worn their jersey (let me know who else wore there jerseys if I missed somebody important)....

CB Robert Alford- #23 (Dunta Robinson)

DE Malliciah Goodman- #93 (Ray Edwards)

TE Levine Toilolo- #80 (Andre Rison, Kerry Meier)

DE Stansly Maponga- #99 (Vance Walker)

DB Kemal Ishmael- #36 (Lawyer Milloy)

DB/LB Zeke Motta- #41 (Eugene Robinson)

QB Sean Renfree- #12 (Chris Candler, Chris Miller)

Interview with Scott Radinsky: MLB Player/Coach, Punk Rock frontman, Entrepreneur

Scott Radinsky played Major League Baseball for 11 years spending the majority of his career with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. He finished the final three years with the St. Louis Cardinals and Cleveland Indians.
Like most relief pitchers, they rarely if ever get the fame and glory that is deserved unless you’re named Mariano Rivera. Without those guys to bridge the gap from the sixth inning on, Rivera and his counterparts never get that chance.
Radinsky put up unbelievable numbers his senior year in high school, Stephen Strasburg numbers you might say;
14-1, 0.72 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 100⅓ innings.
He was drafted in the third round of the 1986 draft by the Chicago White Sox, and played four years in the minors until making his debut for the Sox in 1990, deservedly so. In nearly 200 minor league innings he gave up only 64 earned runs, struck out 186 and posted an ERA of 3.07.
And so the story goes on as you might say.
11 years in the Show, 557 app...

Falcons WR Roddy White Held Out of Practice

Falcons WR Roddy White didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice due to a knee injury, according to Jay Adams.
The likelihood is that White will suit up Sunday despite the setback, considering the Falcons have given no one any reason to believe that the wide receiver won’t play.
Should White sit out, QB Matt Ryan will have to look to his other playmakers like Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez to carry the load against a solid Giants secondary on Sunday.

The Atlanta Falcons decided to limit wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones’ reps during Wednesday’s practice in order to give them some rest after Monday night’s win over the Broncos.
Antone Smith and Chris Owens didn’t practice today. Roddy, Nicholas and Julio were limited for rest purposes. #atlsd12

The good news is that each player isn’t injured and they should be good to go this week.

The Falcons started their three day mini-camp today with two practices. There was a walk-thru this morning that was closed to the public and a practice this afternoon that was open to the public. We were not able to attend but here are some tweets around the Falcons twitter-sphere...

First pass of Minicamp was a screen. Second was a 15-yard dart to Julio. #atlminicamp

#Falcons WR Julio Jones made a nice catch over the middle with Asante Samuel in coverage.

#Falcons DE John Abraham and undrafted rookie TE Adam Nissley got into a little minicamp scuffle.

1-on-1 drills just ended. Julio brutalized Chris Owens once and Roddy had his way with Grimes a few times too #Falcons

Falcons Rookie Camp Darkhorse: Aron White

This weekend 46 players will head to Flowery Branch to take part in the Atlanta Falcons rookie camp. Jay Adams has the full list for you here. I touched on the "drafted" rookies previously and we also sought outside perspectives on Peter Konz, Bradie Ewing and Travian Robertson. Make sure you check out the piece Zach wrote earlier this week about a few undrafted free agents that he thought had the best chance to make the team. Falcons beat writer D Orlando Ledbetter recently updated his depth chart and the tight end position really stands out as a position that lacks depth.
Does he have the moves to make the squad?

We have Tony Gonzalez as the starter. He's a no-brainer future Hall of Famer. Number two on the depth chart is Michael Palmer. In two years, Palmer has just 15 receptions and 2 touchdowns. I like Palmer but he's doesn't exactly have the position locked down. After Palmer, the fight for the third tight end spot (provided the team holds onto thre...

Mailbag: The most under publicized captain

Long time fan of the blog Andy sent me an email this morning with a link to an article put together by Jay Adams of Cave Magazine. The article looks at Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, and how he could be the most under appreciated and under publicized captain in New York sports today:
Knicks captain Carmelo Anthony had a reality show on VH1. Giants captain Eli Manning has been on the cover of every major newspaper twice in the last five years. Jets captain Mark Sanchez was a GQ cover story. And Yankees captain Derek Jeter? Well, we know more about his ex-girlfriends than we do about the entire Yankees outfield.
To be fair, this is true for a reason. Adams points out that Cally is under publicized, but hockey as a sport is under publicized. Is it all that surprising to see that the blue collar captain, the heart and soul of the Rangers, isn’t well known in New York?
Considering his stats this year, which are better than most really give him credit for, it is a bit surprising that main...
