Week Four: Weekend Forecast

Charlotte (1-2) at Hamilton (2-0)/Friday, May 17th, 11:00 AM EST-Charlotte is one of the toughest teams in the league to figure out. Is it ready to make that playoff push? A win against Hamilton would do a lot to improve it's outlook. On the other side, the Nationals are undefeated, but still need to keep it going to really convince people what it can be. On a side note, a win Friday would be the best start in history for the Nats.

	Prediction: Hamilton 14 Charlotte 9

Chesapeake (3-0) at Boston (0-3)/Saturday, May 18th, 7:00 PM EST-Not a good sign for the Cannons. The last thing they need is to have a team like the Bayhawks come into town. With how litle support the guys like Paul Rabil and Ari Sussman are getting offensively, Kip Turner and company have to be licking their chops. The 'Hawks goalie is allowing a league low four goals-per-game.

	Prediction: Chesapeake 12 Boston 5

New York (1-2) at Ohio (0-2)/Saturday, May 18th, 8:00 PM EST-Talk about two teams t...

Who's Hot/Who's Not

We're two weeks into the MLL season and that means it's the perfect time to look at who's shining and who...well isn't.

	WHO'S HOT

Ben Rubeor-Use whatever adjective comes to mind: fantastic, amazing, incredible, whatever. This guy was awesome against New York last weekend. He tallied seven goals in a game that only featured 12 total. The performance earned him player of the week honors and I can't say I would disagree.

Peet Poillon-It looks like Charlotte has at least to guys that can score at will when you team Poillon up with Matt Danowski. The UMBC product managed seven points (five goals, two assists) in the Hounds' first win of the season of the season. Performances like this certainly move the team in the right direction.

Greg Gurenlian-Even though New York lost, Gurenlian turned in his second straight dominating performance at the faceoff X. The FOGO went 10-16 against Chesapeake and is now 31-44 on the season. The Lizards can score,...

Three Take Away's From the Weekend

Here's the first of our weekly installment of take away's during the MLL season. I'll let you know what suprise me from this past weekend of play.

	3. Hamilton's Impressive Opening Win

How about this one. In Dave Huntley's first game back as head coach the Nats go into Harvard Stadium and beat Boston 15-8. Huntley's said over and over again that one of the biggest keys to Hamilton's season is Brodie Merrill and, boy, did he show it last weekend. The defenseman tallied seven groundballs and was the leader the Nats need on D. It might be too early to make any sweeping statements, but Hamilton should sure enjoy this one.

	2. Ben Rubeor Score's Seven Goals

How about this. Ben Rubeor earns MLL Player of the Week honors with a seven goal performance against New York. To put that into perspective, Chesapeake scored nine total goals and there were only 12 scores in the game. Hat's off to you Ben Rubeor on a fantastic performance.

Week 2 Preview: Hamilton at Boston

The Ryan Boyle countdown is on. The Attackman has a chance to break Casey Powell's MLL point record with a strong performance for Boston. On the other side, it's back to the future for Hamilton with Dave Huntley starting his first game as head coach. Here's how it should go down.

Boyle inched within two points of the record with two last weekend in his team's lost to New York. Powell's mark stands at 399 and if history is any indication, he should get it Saturday. When these two team's met last year at Harvard Stadium, Boyle had five points (three goals, two assists). Of course, he's going to need help from the rest of his team which was a problem last week. Outside of Boyle, Paul Rabil, Ari Sussman and Mike Stone, the rest of the team combined for four points. That's not going to cut it.

As for the Nats, they're starting fresh with Huntley...kind of. The head man spent two years with the squad from 2009 to 2010 and had success with the cl...

MLL Weekend Round-Up

Great start to the MLL weekend. We saw Denver and Chesapeake maintain the status quo, while New York sent a message with a big win.

	Denver 21 - Rochester 16

What an offensive explosion from the Outlaws. Chris Bocklet led the charge with five goals, while Will Mangan, Jeremy Sieverts and Terry Kimener each had a hat trick. A big reason why they could score so much? Anthony Kelly dominated at the faceoff X. The FOGO went 19-29 and even added a score.

On the Charlotte side, Matt Danowski was the star. He tallied seven points for the Hounds (5 G, 2 A). Still, though, the rest of his team couldn't pick him up. Mark Manos struggled in net. He managed to save on 15 of the 35 shots on net.

	Chesapeake 17 - Rochester 14

The champs got off on the right foot and they did it with defense down the stretch. After Rochester scored four straight at the end of the third quarter, Chesapeake came back to shut the Rattlers out in the fourth.

On the other side, the four goal...

Bandits Win Another Close Game Against Philadelphia

(Courtesy: Buffalo Bandits)
The Buffalo Bandits came out of Rochester last Saturday night with a win after a Tracey Kelusky shot with eleven seconds left on the game clock. So, it would be fitting for the Bandits to setup the same type of scenario again the next week.
With 1:47, Paul Rabil took am illegal body checking penalty against Mark Steenhuis. With the Wings down 13-12, it seemed that Buffalo could cruise away with a victory by just keeping control of the ball with the man advantage. 1:04 into the power play, Brodie Merrill got the ball and streaked down the floor and took a shot on Anthony Cosmo. Cosmo made the save, but gave up a rebound which Drew Westervelt cleaned up to tie the game at 13 all. It was the third shorthanded goal the Bandits have allowed this season.
With the game tied and one minute left on the clock, the Bandits still had the upper hand as they would still be on the man advantage for the rest of the game. Luke Wiles explains the play that happened next. “...

Bandits React To Blockbuster NLL Deal

The indoor lacrosse world was shaken up on Friday when one of the biggest trades in recent years happened involving two East Division rivals.
The deal between the Rochester Knighthawks and the Philadelphia Wings sent waves around the National Lacrosse League that Rochester was set on repeating their 2012 performance that saw them win their for Champion’s Cup in franchise history.
The full deal is as follows:
Rochester Gets:

Forward Dan Dawson
Defender Paul Dawson
2016 first-round draft pick

Philadelphia Gets:

Paul Rabil
Jordan Hall
Joel White
Robbie Campbell
2014 second-round draft pick

At first look, this deal looks like an absolute steal for the Knighthawks. They get two offensive powerhouses in the Dawson brothers to go with the returning Casey Powell, and now become, in many eyes, the clear favorites in 2013.
Of course, every other team in the NLL knows about this trade which leads to people giving their thoughts on the deal. Including members of the Buffalo Bandits.

Best Lacrosse Players of 2012

Major League Lacrosse is filled with players that are highly skilled and effective on the field, but a handful have risen to the top of the heap over the course of this season. Here are the top five players in the popular and fast-paced league as of the midway point in the 2012 campaign:
Paul Rabil
The great Paul Rabil belongs at the top of any list involving lacrosse, and the 27-year-old is having another stellar season in 2012. Through only eight games the Boston Cannons star has racked up 46 points, which is enough to lead the league by a whopping 13 points. Defenders are generally unable to stay in front of Rabil, who uses his large 6’3″ frame muscle through traffic and his breakaway speed to find wide open spaces to operate. It is very likely that Rabil will stay on the top of this list for many years to come.

Jeremy Sieverts
Sieverts is an all-round player with a knack for coming through in the clutch. Also lanky and athletic, Sieverts fills up stat sheets on a regular bas...

Though I certainly find lacrosse's Native American origins fascinating, I didn't love my first lacrosse game (BU-Notre Dame). I figured I needed to give the game another shot, and the Boston Cannons' season opener Saturday at Harvard Stadium provided just such an opportunity. Simultaneously, I figured it would make a great 52 Games for DigBoston.

The second time around, I had a lot more fun. And I added a new press pass to my collection!

The Rabil Cold War Ends

412 LaxThe Rabil Cold War Ends
Last night, the final chapter in our blood feud with Paul Rabil was written.
I’ve disliked Paul Rabil pretty much since the moment he got to Hopkins because he was in some shape or form responsible for defeating Duke in the 2005 and 2007 title games. Then I disliked him growing his hair to caveman like lengths, dodging with his tongue out, and telling people he shot the ball 23509293 times before and after practice. Not going to mention his Polamalu comments from this fall. More recently, we’ve been furious with his weight room and/or Chipotle inspired tweets.
Yesterday, I tweeted that even I enjoyed the highlights below.

Looks like he’s dodging against 3rd graders.
Then this happened.

I don’t even care if that was his manager. (Maybe it was and maybe it wasn’t.)
We’re done.
That will do pig.
He is a Warrior guy now after all.

Why College Is Better Than Pro (Mostly)

Lacrosse All StarsWhy College Is Better Than Pro (Mostly)Denver vs. Denver. College vs. Pro.
On an even playing field, pro lacrosse players would be better than their college counterparts, pro lacrosse teams would be better than college teams, and the pros would represent another step in the evolution of the game. But in our existing lacrosse reality, this even set of circumstances rarely presents itself, and because of the current set-up, elite college teams are often better than their pro counterparts.
It’s hard to define the concept of “better” simply, or by a single measurable metric, without focusing on wins and losses. But since the MLL and NCAA teams don’t play any “real” games, the wins and losses argument has to be thrown out. One can always look at scrimmage scores and use those as a basis for comparison, but we all know scrimmages aren’t games, and teams prep for them a little differently. The point is that we can’t take a lot away from the results of a college vs pro...

Full Avicii highlights later today.
