Vacation Rays Notes, Iwamura is good, Crawford is bad

I'm down in Tampa on Vacation this week & I have some notes on Iwamura, Young, Upton, Crawford & more. Some are standard fair (Iwamura = good), and some will raise some eyebrows (Crawford is a terrible fielder, Young & Upton aren't 100% MLB ready) & more.

Casey Janssen used in relief today

During today's Toronto/KC game (still in progress) Janssen was used for 2/3 IP in relief. I guess his arm was still fresh after being pulled on Wednesday after 3 1/3 IP (5 ERs). Looks like Janssen is going to loose his spot in the rotation if the Jays can find another pitcher.

Its been a shame to watch. Janssen started out strong but teams are getting more familiar with him. His performance quickly became erratic and then consistently terrible. In four of his last five games he has given up at least 5 earned runs and only lasted 3 innings in 3 of those games.

The Jays will look for another arm but payroll concerns may make it difficult for them to land anything of quality.

Casey Janssen isn't from the Netherlands

A couple weeks back, I decided to add Casey Janssen to the mix of my ever evolving fantasy rotation. I'm embarrassed to say that, even with MLB Extra Innings, I have not yet seen this guy pitch. That's what makes me all the more confused about his 3.26 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and -- get this -- 3.99 K/9.

I'd like to chalk this all up to some cosmic windfall, but the dude has a .203 BAA. And what's more, he's young (24) and got some pedigree (a former 4th round pick). Unlike the John Koronka's of the world, I'm not willing to label the Janssen experience a house of cards. I'm encouraged by his 2.75 K/BB and his impressive outings against the White Sox and Angels. He may not be Dutch, but Janssen has got a special tulip in my heart.
