Summer Olympics Day 9: Determining The Worlds Fastest Jamaican

After Canada’s Donovan Bailey won the 100 Meter Dash in the 1996 Atlanta Games, the United States responded with a decade long run of dominance in the event. They won seven of eight major championships after that, including gold medals in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics by Maurice Greene and Justin Gatlin. But that stretch seems like ancient history these days. The Yanks have been without a major title in this event since 2007 as they, along with the rest of the world, have ceded this race to the Jamaicans. A lot of that capitulation has to do with the insane talent that is Usain Bolt. But when Bolt was tossed out of last summer’s world championships after a false start, it was Yohan Blake, another freaskishly talented prodigy from the island nation, who flew right by everybody for the title.
The world’s fastest men (and women too, really) are from Jamaica, and I doubt anything will happen during this track meet to change those opinions. The United States has won gold in this event 17 times in the O

Blake wins 100 meters in 9.84 seconds

World 100-meter champion Yohan Blake ran the year's second-fastest time Wednesday night, winning the Cayman Invitational in 9.84 seconds in an early tuneup for the London Olympics.

Only Usain Bolt - Blake's training partner in their home country of Jamaica - has run faster this year. Bolt won a meet in Kingston in 9.82 on Saturday night.

Blake won last year's 100 at world championships after Bolt was disqualified for a false start. The two aren't expected to square off in the 100 until Jamaica's Olympic trials at the end of June, and barring something unexpected, they should be the favorites in London.

Blake had run a 9.90 earlier this season.

''I'm very pleased with my time,'' he said. ''In fact, it has put me ahead in my preparations for London. I'm looking forward to my next race.''

His next race is June 9 in New York. Bolt, meanwhile, will race May 31 at a Diamond League meet in Rome.

Finishing second Wednesday was another Jamaican, Michael
