• In 45 games and 181 at bats, 19-year-old outfielder Eury Perez hit for a .381 AVG with a .443 OBP, .503 SLG, 3 doubles, 5 triples, 3 HR's, 24 RBI's, 15 walks, 16 stolen bases and 20 K's, earning himself recognition as the 2009 Gulf Coast League Hitter of the Year in his third season in the Washington Nationals' system. In two Dominican Summer League campaigns, Perez posted similarly notable numbers, with a combined .293 AVG in 112 games and 376 AB's, in which he collected 14 doubles, 3 triples, 4 HR's, 58 RBI's, 43 stolen bases and 79 walks while striking out 96 times. The Hardball Times recognized Perez's accomplishments by ranking the 6'0'', 180 lb, right-handed hitting outfielder the 7th best prospect in the Nationals' organization with the author of the list, Hardball Times' writer Matt Hagen, writing that, "Perez has flashed his potential at every stop he has made. His bat seems very advanced for his age, his speed will be a weapon, and he has even shown some unexpected power."

• The Hardball Times' Matt Hagen wrote about Eury Perez in an early September '09 article entitled, "Awards Season: GCL and Arizona League Honors", commenting on how the potential-future-Nationals'-outfielder had, "...cemented his position as one of Washington's more exciting young prospects by finishing the year with a 27-game hitting streak on his way to winning the GCL batting title."
• Baseball America.com's Prospect Hot Sheet from August '09 had Eury Perez listed as one of two outfielders under a subtitle, "Helium Watch" along with NY Yankees' outfielder Melky Mesa, and described Perez as being a, "potential hidden gem" in the Nationals' system, with the Baseball America staff recognizing Perez's "...feel for hitting and the strike zone," (which would account for his gaudy K/BB totals), and noting the 19-year-old's "above-average speed" as, "...a weapon in center field and on the bases."
• The Nationals Farm Authority's Brian Oliver had Eury Perez ranked 9th overall amongst the hitters in the Nationals' system in his late December list of the "NFA Top Prospects", where Mr. Oliver writes that Perez might be, "Possibly the first international free agent to develop for the Nationals."
Up Next In Prospect Watch: The Other Name That Surprised Me On The Hardball Times' List...
Hint: This pitcher is one of four undrafted free agents signed by the Nationals in January 2007...

Your Saturday News Round-Up

I won't be calling this "Around the Yankee Universe" like Ed does, mainly because I can't afford to have the Yankees sue me, like they're doing to the guys over atThe Yankee Universe.
Good for those guys to keep writing, and they've got a good piece up on Cashman's interview with Mike Francesa.

I think I’d like to add if I could. It’s just that the prices on some of these (free agents) are prohibitive, and it’s a very limited list as well, the list that we would have an interest in.

Erik Manning of Fangraphs thinks that Kanekoa Teixeira is good enough to stick with Seattle (he was taken in the Rule 5 draft). I won't second guess the players Cash added to the 40-man. It's been decades since the Yanks had enough quality minor leaguers to lose any. To lose multiple players in consecutive years speaks to how highly the rest of the league thinks of the Yanks' minor league system.

Will Carrol talked to MLB.com about some injury concerns for you fantasy players.

NoMaas is opposed to signing Mark DeRosa and so am I. A NL team will offer DeRosa and Hairston Jr. more than the Yanks should. We lost pitchers in the Rule 5 draft because we've got Reegie Corona, Eduardo Nunez, Ramiro Pena and Kevin Russo on the 40-man roster. One of them will be able to be our supersub. If we didn't have some faith in our prospects, we'd have never known Cervelli.

Scouting the Sally has a scouting report up on Single-A prospect Melky Mesa, which Dylan Sharek built off to underscore the primary difficulty of scouting: how do you know the guy you see on the day you're there is the guy who will show up day in and day out.

================We are lucky enough to have a SWB report from BigGuy tonight. He won't be doing these all the time by when he does I willpost them. Thanks BG for the great contributions.(Triple-A) Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (71-56) lost to Buffalo (52-77) 4-0: Box Score - RecapThe SWB Yanks continue to struggle offensively, being shutout by the Buffalo Bisons (Mets) 4-0. It was the 8th time the Yanks have been shutout this season. They've played under .500 ball since May 9th, but still own a 3 game lead, pending the outcome of the Syracuse game.PITCHING: Ivan Nova got the start for the Yankees. Nova got into trouble in the 1st when he gave up singles to his first 2 hitters. He recovered very nicely retiring his next 14 batters until a 2-out single and walk in the 5th. Nova gave up a leadoff single in the 6th, but wiped it out with a doubleplay. Buffalo took a 1-0 lead off Nova in the 7th on 2 singles and a RBI groundout. He left trailing 1-0 and took the loss (1-3). Nova's line: 7.0 IP, 1 run, 6 hits, 5 K--1 walk, 91 pitches--63 strikes, 8 groundouts---8 flyouts.Mark Melancon came on to pitch a scoreless 8th inning giving up a double. Buffalo got to Melancon for 3 runs in the 9th on 3 doubles and a single to take a 4-0 lead. Melancon's line: 3.0 IP, 3 runs, 5 hits, 5 K's--0 walks.OFFENSE: The Yanks threatened in the early innings off Buffalo starter Chris Mason, but could not break through. In the 1st, Austin Jackson and Shelly Duncan picked up 2-out singles. Francisco Cervelli came off the DL and doubled in the 2nd inning but was stranded. SWB threatened again in the 3rd when Kevin Russo and Ramiro Pena started the inning with singles, but once again were stranded. The Yanks had another threat the 8th when Cervelli reached on an error and Reegie Corona walked. The Yanks did not get a hit after the Pena's infield single in the 3rd inning. They've scored only 10 runs over their last 6 games.NOTES: Kevin Russo came into the game 2nd in the league in batting at .336. ... Brian Petersen put on DL to make room for Francisco Cervelli. ... Juan Miranda still nursing a sore ankle. ... The Yankees are sending pitcher Ian Kennedy, catcher Austin Romine, infielder Brandon Laird, and outfielder Colin Curtis to the Arizona Fall League. They will send 3 more pitchers. This year they'll play for the Surprise Rafters. ... Ramiro Pena played centerfield in this game.
