Phillies Sign Third Baseman Josh Fields

The Phillies have made a signing, and it's a third baseman. However, he is not likely the solution. Today the Phillies signed third baseman Josh Fields to a minor league contract. Once a top prospect, Fields will likely go into Spring Training along the lines of the many minor league infielders the Phillies have signed over the years. Hopefully they will get lucky.
Fields, not to be confused with relief pitcher Joshua Fields, turns 30 years old next month. He was twice listed on Baseball America's Top 100 prospects, and even spent some time in Japan. In his rookie season with the Chicago White Sox in 2007 he hit 23 home runs and drove in 67 runs in just 100 games. However, despite the promise Fields would never be the same.
Fields last played in the majors with the Kansas City Royals in 2010 and hit .320 in 15 games. Fields spent 2011 in Japan and 2012 in Spring Training with the Dodgers. He hit .322 with 13 home runs and 71 RBI playing for the AAA Alberquequ...

Why I still believe in the Mariners Justin Smoak

Don’t Give Up!
As the offseason rumors rage on, it is no surprise that the Mariners are being talked about in nearly every offensive trade transaction out there.
When looking where to place a power bat, it is only natural to be looking at first base. This makes sense as the position is the easiest to man defensively so the big, slow and strong guys like can still play ball.
Prince Fielder, listed with an official weight of 275, is the epitome of this phenomena.
I personally doubt Prince has been anywhere near 275 in the past 5 years. Trying to imagine Prince shagging fly balls or diving for a ball past second base is quite a humorous exercise.
I personally really enjoy any time Prince tries to do his impression of “running” on the base-paths. But man that guy can hit the ball.
Prince at 275? Cmon.
Power Needed
In the M’s case they have not had a true power bat at first since Richie Sexson, who was crazy, and did not mix with Seattle well.
In 2010 The Mariners reeling from one of the worst years

Mets Minors: 2008 Draft time capsule (Ike Davis & Reese Havens)

The 2008 draft was an okay year for the Mets but expectations were high, given that they had 3 picks in the first 33 overall. I go over the full draft below but the snap-shot is that the Mets addressed the revolving door at first base that had gone from John Olerud to Todd Zeile to Mo Vaughn to Jason Phillips to Mike Piazza (and Todd Zeile) to Doug Mientkiewicz to Carlos Delgado. Ike Davis was the first pick for the Mets in the draft and it proved to be a solid pick considering it was 18th overall.
Winners:
•	Ike Davis (Starting MLB 1B)
•	Kirk Nieuwenhuis (MLB 4th OF)
•	Josh Satin (MLB Bench Bat)
•	Eric Campbell (Future Utility Super-Sub)
•	Collin McHugh (Back-end Rotation Candidate)
•	Chris Schwinden (Emergency Starter)
Losers:
•	Reese Havens (Longshot for starting 2B of the future)
•	Brad Holt
•	Javier Rodriguez
•	Sean Ratliff
•	Dock Doyle
•	Michael Hebert
It wasn’t too long ago that this draft looked even better, back when people still had higher hopes for Reese Hav

Champ South Carolina back in CWS

South Carolina coach Ray Tanner gathered his players around him on the infield soon after clinching a spot in the College World Series.

''We didn't start out exactly like we wanted,'' Tanner told them.

But the two-time defending national champions always seem to end up where they want to be: in Omaha playing for a title.

South Carolina (45-17) wrapped up the NCAA super regional series with a 5-1 victory over Oklahoma on Monday, extending the Gamecocks' record with their 21st straight tournament victory. It's their third consecutive trip to the eight-team finals, 11th overall and sixth in Tanner's 16 seasons in charge.

''He's a magic man,'' ace lefty Michael Roth said.

Tanner's team has a chance to create a little more magic, too -- it could join the powerhouse program of Southern Cal as the only schools with more than two consecutive CWS crowns.

And the Gamecocks did it with plenty of new faces. There were five players in Monday's lineup that w
