Diamondbacks 1, Marlins 0

Brandon McCarthy pitched a three-hitter for his first win since being struck in the head by a line drive last season, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Saturday night.

Gerardo Parra led off the game with a home run for Arizona, which has won four in a row while dealing the Marlins a season-long seven-game losing streak.

McCarthy (1-3) struck out five and walked two while throwing 68 of 99 pitches for strikes in his third career shutout, first since Sept. 3, 2011, against Seattle.

McCarthy was hit in the head by an Erick Aybar line drive on Sept 5. 2012, against the Angels while with Oakland. He suffered a skull fracture and underwent surgery to end his season.

He signed a two-year deal with Arizona in December and went without a win in his first eight starts with his new club.

Last Sunday, McCarthy was pulled after eight scoreless innings and 88 pitches, and Arizona's relievers blew a late lead during a 4-2 loss in 10 innings to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Leake Stifles Marlins

The Miami Marlins put together eleven hits on Wednesday but couldn’t score one run as they were shut out 4-0 by Mike Leake and the Cincinnati Reds. With a run coming in the first inning, Miami trailed all game to fall to 11-29 on the year. The Marlins continue to stay on a pace that could come close to the worst record in MLB history.
Alex Sanabia looked like he may not make it past the fourth inning early on but the youngster battled for six innings of work on a night the Marlins needed innings from their starter. Sanabia allowed four runs on nine hits during his time on the mound which also featured three walks and three strikeouts. Tagged with the loss, Sanabia is now 2-6 this year with an E.R.A at an even 5.00. Ryan Webb, Chad Qualls, and Mike Dunn also saw time on the mound in the game.
Except for Derek Dietrich’s second double of the year, the Marlins hit a bunch of singles. As a team, they were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left twelve on base. The op...

Sanabia Loses Homecoming Game

Alex Sanabia pitched for the first time in San Diego as a Major Leaguer and fell to 2-5 in the process. The San Diego native was the pitcher of record in the Miami Marlins’ 5-1 loss to the Padres. Miami has now scored only 1 run combined in two games after putting up a season high 14 in Philadelphia. The Padres who also have a losing record have outscored the Marlins 10-1.
Sanabia allowed nine hits and four runs with all of those coming in the first two innings. The young right-hander saw his E.R.A rise to 4.85 but is currently not in danger of losing his rotation spot. Ryan Webb relieved Sanabia and had one of his better appearances of the year striking out three in one and two third perfect innings. A.J. Ramos rounded out the relief corps with two innings of one run ball. Ramos struck out three batters of his own and now has a 3.32 E.R.A.
With a lefty on the mound, Matt Diaz received a start and tallied an extra base hit for Miami. Diaz doubled for the first time this...

Fish Drop Third Straight

The Miami Marlins lost their third consecutive game on Friday as the Philadelphia Phillies came away 4-1 winners. The loss was the fourth in five games vs Philadelphia on the year and moved Miami to 8-22 on the year. Also getting worse was their road record which is now at 3-11. At the current pace, Miami will come close to challenging the 1962 New York Mets for worst record in MLB history.
Ricky Nolasco started the game and allowed four runs on eight hits in his six innings of work. The Marlins’ ace was tagged with his third loss of the year to fall to 2-3 but was better than the box score may say. Three of the runs came on solo home runs where Nolasco made mistakes or hung off-speed pitches. For many of his pitches, he was in command as shown but his four strikeouts and one walk. Ryan Webb worked the final two innings of the game for Miami an contributed those innings in scoreless fashion.

Comeback Extends Win Streak To Three

The Miami Marlins didn’t lead on Tuesday until the end of the game but that was good enough for the 2-1 victory over the New York Mets which was their third straight win. Kevin Slowey pitched a masterful eight innings but was a victim once again of low run support. The third consecutive win gives Miami it’s longest winning streak of the year and improves their record to 8-19.
Slowey struck out eight in his eight innings on the mound and allowed only one run on four hits. It was the longest outing for a Marlins’ starter this year which the team needed after a 15 inning game a day earlier. Slowey remained 0-2 on the year as the Marlins were unable to score until after he exited but he did lower his E.R.A to a sparkling 2.15. Ryan Webb was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless ninth to keep the deficit at one. Webb is now 1-1 on the season with a great 2.35 E.R.A of his own.
Things were quiet for the Marlins’ offense until the bottom of the ninth with two of the tea...

Stanton Homers, Fish Fall Again

The Miami Marlins lost their third straight game to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday by a final tally of 3-2. It wasn’t all bad news for Miami however as Giancarlo Stanton hit his first home run of the season. The 472 foot blast cleared the scoreboard in left field in what was one of the longest home runs hit so far at Marlins Park. With the loss, Miami is now 5-19 on the year.
Alex Sanabia pitched well but took the loss to fall to 2-3. The young righty gave up three runs in six and two third innings with that third run coming off the bull pen. Sanabia struck out four to go along with two walks and six hits. Mike Dunn who allowed the inherited run to score finished off the seventh. Ryan Webb and Chad Qualls rounded out the pitching side for Miami with scoreless appearances.
In addition to Stanton’s blast which came in the first, Miguel Olivo hit his second home run of the year in the second inning. The two home runs were two of a total of five hits in the game for Miami. ...

Twinbill Split

The Miami Marlins split a doubleheader on Tuesday in Minnesota with the Twins taking game one 4-3 before the fish took the second game 8-5. The split moves Miami to 5-16 on the season. The doubleheader was needed after Monday’s game was snowed out in what was the Marlins’ first interleague series of the season.
Jose Fernandez started game one and allowed four runs in his five innings of work to fall to 0-2. The rookie walked two and struck out only two which paled in comparison to earlier outings by him. Ryan Webb worked the next three innings to save the bullpen for the second game and did so while allowing no runs on one hit. Webb’s effort kept Miami in the game until the end. In game two, Ricky Nolasco started and also only lasted five innings. For Nolasco, the day went a bit better though as he allowed only two earned runs on six hits to earn his first win of 2013. The Marlins’ ace is now 1-2 on the year with a very respectable 3.81 E.R.A. A.J.
Miami Drops Another Series

The Miami Marlins will have to wait at least one more series to pick up their first series win of 2013 after they dropped Wednesday’s game to the Washington Nationals by a final score of 6-1. Washington has now taken five out of the six meetings against Miami and won both series played. A day after scoring eight runs, Miami’s offense returned to their normal form only plating one.
Ricky Nolasco started the game and took the loss by allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of work. As is typical for Nolasco, he showed great control striking out six while walking none. Nolasco fell to 0-2 on the year despite holding a respectable 3.86 E.R.A. Ryan Webb, Chad Qualls and Steve Cishek all saw work in the game with Webb allowing one additional run in the seventh frame. Cishek also allowed a run in the ninth but it was unearned.

Big Fifth Puts Fish Away

Wednesday’s 8-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves moved the Miami Marlins to 1-8 on the year. Most of the runs came in a six run fifth inning for Atlanta where they hit two home runs off of Miami starter, Alex Sanabia. This was the third time that the Marlins have been shut out in only nine games and the first time that a starter was ineffective. The Marlins currently hold the worst record in Major League Baseball.
Sanabia was cruising until the fifth, maintaining his 0.00 E.R.A for the year but then it all came unraveled in that inning. In all, Atlanta had eight hits and six runs off of Sanabia. The young righty also walked three while striking out two. Ryan Webb and John Maine each allowed a run in an inning of relief while Mike Dunn pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Sanabia who was charged with the loss fell to 1-1 but remains the only pitcher on the Marlins’ staff with a win next to his name.

Scoreless Streak Continues

Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to the Washington Nationals gave the Marlins their second consecutive shutout loss to begin the 2013 season. Another wasted performance by a starting pitcher took place as Kevin Slowey gave Miami five and a third solid innings of work. This is now the longest it has taken the Marlins to score a run to begin a season in franchise history.
In Slowey’s first Major League start since 2011, the right-hander looked poised and flashed some good stuff. Slowey even struck Bryce Harper out which is quite an accomplishment right now for a Marlins’ pitcher. The young phenom doubled later in the game off the bullpen and has almost as many hits this year himself as the entire Marlins’ team does. Slowey, Ryan Webb and A.J. Ramos each allowed a run with Webb’s being of the unearned variety. Slowey struck out four and walked three which ran his pitch count up to 85. Mike Redmond made the decision to go to Webb in a first and third situation in the sixth which Webb qui...

The Miami Marlins played to a 2-2 tie on Sunday in Viera after tying the Washington Nationals in the ninth inning. As is customary in the Spring, the two teams agreed to play one extra inning before calling it a day. With the exception of Ryan Webb, every Miami pitcher to take the mound did a fine job including two electric innings from Evan Reed. The major league relief hopeful struck out three in two scoreless innings of work.
The majority of the Marlins’ lineup was comprised of guys expected to be sent to minor-league camp in the coming weeks but one regular did start as Rob Brantly made his Spring debut behind the plate. There were a handful of guys that could win bench roles including former Rookie of the Year, Chris Coghlan who went 0-2 with a run batted in. Jake Jefferies who has an outside chance of landing the backup catcher role following Jeff Mathis’ injury on Saturday went 0-2 with a run batted in.
