Video Breakdown: Jameson Taillon’s 10 K Outing

Jameson Taillon stuck out ten batters in his last start for Altoona.
By now, most of you have heard that Pirates #2 prospect Jameson Taillon had a career high 10 strikeouts in his second start of the season on Friday night against the Harrisburg Senators. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend this game live, so instead I watched the replay on milb.tv to see what was (and wasn’t) working for Taillon, who ended up taking the loss after giving up two runs in his six innings of work. Below are my reactions, inning by inning.
Before we get started, a disclaimer: Since I’m relying on video, I don’t have my typical vantage from behind home plate, making certain pitch movements hard to detect (change-up and two-seam fastball mostly), especially without the benefit of a radar gun to help determine which pitch was thrown. Also, the video included some incidental skips over a few pitches, so I definitely missed a few things I would have picked up had I been there live.
1st inning: 3 up, 3 down, 2 Ks.

Teen with Down Syndrome hits 3-pointers

Sports can make even the hardcore fan a little jaded at times with lockouts (NHL), scandals (Lance Armstrong) and controversies (Manti Te'o).

Every once in a while, though, along comes a heartwarming moment of purity that serves as a reminder about the real meaning of the games.

One of those special scenes played out late Wednesday afternoon in a middle-school gym in Rochester Hills, Mich., when a 13-year-old boy born with Down Syndrome got to live his basketball dream.

With about two minutes remaining in the first half of an eighth-grade game between Van Hoosen Middle School and an opponent from the nearby city of Troy, Owen Groesser walked to the scorer's table to check in.

The students from Van Hoosen immediately started to cheer and chant his name while holding up signs they'd made for him.

"Let's go Owen... Let's go Owen ... Let's go Owen."

Shortly after Groesser took the floor, his coach and teammates called for "The Owen," a play designed just for him.

Royals Farm Report: April 17

Triple-A
The Omaha Storm Chasers (Pacific Coast League) have started off another very strong season going 9-3 over the first week plus. The Storm Chasers are an even more impressive 7-1 while playing at Werner Park. They will look to defend their Pacific Coast League Championship and certainly have the talent to do so.
Who’s Hot
The offense has carried Omaha early in the season and a pair of former Naturals, Clint Robinson and Derrick Robinson have been right in the middle of things. Clint hit a pair of home runs in the team’s most recent series against the Albuquerque Isotopes and is hitting .320 on the young season. Derrick spent the first few games hitting in the number two spot in the order behind Jarrod Dyson, but since Dyson’s call-up to Kansas City has moved to the lead-off spot. Derrick has scored nine runs on the young season, driven home four, stole four bases, and is hitting .364 at the top of the lineup for the Storm Chasers. On the mound Jeremy Jeffress has gone 2-0 wi...

Fireside Chat With Larry Mackey: Uganda Lacrosse And Service

Lacrosse All StarsFireside Chat With Larry Mackey: Uganda Lacrosse And ServicePassion and excitement for lacrosse in Uganda!
We recently brought you an interview and update centering around Uganda Lacrosse, and how the game is really growing in Africa for the first time. The sport has been embraced, and in addition to all of the great work that Fields Of Growth are doing, it has really made a big difference in a couple of Ugandan communities. And just like any service oriented project, the first trip to Uganda was only the beginning.
Fields Of Growth is now helping a Huntington (Long Island) native, Larry Mackey, get over to Uganda to serve, and we got to sit down with Larry for this very special Fireside Chat to learn more about his intensely personal upcoming trip to Uganda.
Larry will be running lacrosse practices and volunteering in the local village as part of his two week trip to Uganda. He leaves on November 29th and will return on December 13th. Once he is back, we’ll b...
