The 2013 Colorado Rockies have a chance to win division

De La Rosa continued to surprise on Wednesday. As bad as the Colorado Rockies were playing two weeks ago, they suddenly have re-emerged. On Wednesday afternoon, the Rockies rode Carlos Gonzalez and Jorge De La Rosa to a 4-1 victory, and a series win against the Diamondbacks. It might be time for the critics to admit it, myself included. This Rockies team might be for real. The main reason this team might be able to go the full six months and stay in contention is simple. When things go bad, they respond by playing better. They don't give in. They believe that they are good. The Rockies went 10-18 in May of 2012, effectively ending any chance they had of respectability. In May of 2011, they won just eight games, going 8-21. With that track record, it is understandable why the skepticism was at an all-time high when the Rockies started off May with a 5-9 record and seemed to be in free fall mode for the third straight May.During the bad streak, the offense, not the starting pitching,...

Wilin Rosario delivers walk-off 10th inning single as Colorado Rockies keep standings close

Wilin Rosario was the hero on Tuesday night. From goat to hero in the matter of a night. That is the story of Wilin Rosario on Tuesday night. The catcher laced a single down the right field line, scoring Carlos Gonzalez from second base after the Diamondbacks had walked Troy Tulowitzki in order to pitch to Rosario. The 10th inning single scored Gonzalez to give the Rockies a victory and put them a Wednesday matinee victory away from being tied for first place.Rosario's clutch hit comes the night after being heavily criticized for his lackadaisical defense behind the plate. Jon Garland threw two wild pitches in critical moments on Monday night, however both pitches were very block-able, and ended up costing the Rockies. There is no one who suggests that Rosario is a great defensive catcher. The issues are clear and apparent. However, his bat makes him one of the best hitting catchers in the big leagues. He is good for 30-35 home runs and puts the ball in play enough not to be consid...

First-place D-backs continue trip in Colorado

After taking two of three from the Marlins over the weekend to grab sole possession of first place in the NL West, the Diamondbacks will try to win their third straight series as they visit the Rockies for a three-game set.

The Rockies have been one of baseball's surprises thus far, coming into the week at 23-20 and just two game back of the D-backs for the division lead. The teams have already played seven times this season, with the Rockies taking two of three when the teams met at Coors Field a month ago. Here's a look at where the teams stand entering the early-week matchup.

Pitching matchups: Monday -- LHP Patrick Corbin (6-0, 1.52 ERA) vs. RHP Jon Garland (3-4, 4.89). Tuesday -- RHP Ian Kennedy (2-3, 4.88) vs. RHP Jhoulys Chacin (3-3, 4.07). Wednesday -- RHP Trevor Cahill (3-4, 2.48) vs. LHP Jorge De La Rosa (5-3, 3.58).

Who's hot for the D-backs: First baseman Paul Goldschmidt turned the early-season MVP talk up a notch with a 6-for-13 series against the Marlins over the weekend. He did

Colorado Rockies blow six run lead, season in a tailspin

Jhoulys Chacin blew a six-run lead for the Rockies. The old saying in baseball is that every team loses 60 games and every team wins 60 games, it is what the team does in the other 42 games that defines their season.Of course, which 42 games those defining games are is for anyone to guess. In a season with 162 games, teams are going to win games that they should have lost, and lose games that they should have won. However, there are often a couple of games throughout a season that a team can point to as season-defining games. After the Colorado Rockies, losers of 10 straight games to the San Francisco Giants, blew a six run lead that they built on San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain, it would be hard not to think that the Rockies have officially shifted into non-contender mode.Sure, it was just one game. However, the Rockies are coming off of a horrible road trip, which saw them not only lose four-of-six games, but also saw them nearly get no-hit twice, and get completely shutdown o...

Chacin shaky in return from disabled list, Colorado Rockies must be resilient

Jhoulys Chacin made his return to the mound on Sunday. The test has arrived for the 2013 Colorado Rockies.Jhoulys Chacin returned from the disabled list on Sunday with a 1st inning thud, settled in for four very good innings, then struggled again in the 6th. There were flashes of the pitcher who has ace stuff, but the rust was certainly evident, especially in the early going. The Rockies ended up losing 8-3, with the offense only able to put runs on the board via the solo home run. With runners in scoring position the offense failed to deliver a hit, going 0-for-9. That, combined with Chacin's outing, along with two crucial passed balls by Wilin Rosario behind the plate, combined to doom the Rockies on Sunday afternoon. This early in the season, with the history that the Rockies have from 2012, and the way they have shown fight and battled back after tough losses, should make it easy for the team to wash this one off. At this point it isn't a trend that has gone on long enough ...

Rockies place Jhoulys Chacin on DL

The Colorado Rockies have placed right-handed starting
pitcher Jhoulys Chacin on the 15-day disabled list with a left lower back
strain, according to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post.

Chacin sustained his injury during the seventh inning of Friday night’s contest. Initially, it was thought to be an oblique injury,
which could have been more severe. There’s no official timeframe for his
return, but he’ll have to miss at least two scheduled starts since he’s only
eligible to be activated on May 5.

The Rockies have recalled right-handed reliever Rob Scahill
from Triple-A. Colorado hasn’t yet decided who will take Chacin’s place in the
rotation Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves. The team could be able to push
its starters back – buying them more time to make a decision – given the
inclement weather they’ve recently faced.

Prior to hitting the DL, Chacin had been the Rockies’ best
starter this season. The 25-year-old was 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA over h...

Chacin goes on DL with strained lower back

The Colorado Rockies have placed pitcher Jhoulys Chacin on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

The move is retroactive was retroactive to Saturday. To take Chacin's place on the roster, the team recalled right-hander Rob Scahill from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday.

Chacin was cruising Friday against Arizona when he stretched and grimaced after his 99th pitch. He grabbed his side after his 100th pitch and then left the contest.

Initially, the Rockies thought it might be a strained left oblique, but after reevaluating Chacin the next day the team said the injury centered on his back.

The hard-throwing righty is 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA this season. He was the Rockies' starter on opening day.

Scahill has made five relief appearances for the Sky Sox, going 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA.

Rockies’ Jhoulys Chacin exits with oblique stiffness

Colorado Rockies right-handed starting pitcher Jhoulys
Chacin exited last night’s game suddenly in the seventh inning after grabbing
at his left side, according to Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post. The Rockies
have since described the injury as oblique stiffness, and Chacin said after the
game that he felt something pull in his back and side.

"I don't know, it was kind of right in the middle --
could be my oblique, could be my back," Chacin said. "I just felt
something pull."

Prior to the injury, Chacin had held the Arizona
Diamondbacks scoreless over his first 6 1/3 innings. He threw one pitch to D’backs
outfielder Cody Ross, and quickly grabbed at his side. He threw another
fastball and proceeded to walk around the mound in obvious discomfort. The
right-hander was then removed from the game.

Chacin will be checked out today, and the extent of the
injury should become clearer. Both oblique and back injuries aren’t easy t...

Jhoulys Chacin injury will bring the Colorado Rockies their first test

The Rockies might get a big test if Chacin is out for a while.Seven wins in a row and the talk isn't about how this Colorado Rockies team is defying the odds.If the noise the Rockies are making wasn't muffled enough by the Denver Nuggets heading into the NBA Playoffs, it was completely muted when starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin reached for his back in pain after throwing his 100th pitch. The Rockies ace, the pitcher who everyone forgot was so good, was in the midst of one of his most dominant outings, when what looks like a strained oblique got in his way, and might set the club back significantly.Chacin had been phenomenal. He didn't allow a Diamondback base runner until the 4th inning, and was sailing along when the oblique injury occurred. His slider had the same bite that he displayed in the minors and showed briefly in the big leagues. It was more like a curveball with a 12-6 break than a true slider. Whatever the pitch, it had a ton of movement and was fooling Arizo...

Rockies' Chacin leaves game with injury

Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin was pulled from Friday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with an injury after throwing his 100th pitch, becoming the first Colorado pitcher to reach that number since last June.

The last time a Colorado starter reached the 100 mark in pitches was June 12, a stretch of 117 games, according to STATS. It was the longest string in the majors since records started being kept by STATS in 1988. Before the Rockies' streak, the longest string of starters not throwing 100 pitches in a game was held by Washington, which went 33 games from Aug. 31, 2011, to April 10, 2012.

The team had not yet announced the nature of Chacin's injury. Chacin was seen grabbing his lower left back after throwing his fourth pitch to Arizona's Cody Ross with one out in the seventh. He was replaced by reliever Wilton Lopez.

D-backs shut down by Chacin, Rockies

DENVER (AP) -- Jhoulys Chacin pitched effectively into the seventh inning and became the first Colorado starter to throw 100 pitches in a game since last June before leaving with an injury as the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 3-1 Friday night.

Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run homer and Chacin helped himself by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Rockies won their seventh in row and remained unbeaten in seven home games this season.

Chacin (3-0) was seen grabbing his lower left back after throwing his fourth pitch to the D-backs' Cody Ross with one out in the seventh inning. He was taken out of the game after a conference near the mound with manager Walt Weiss and team trainers and replaced by reliever Wilton Lopez.

The last time a Colorado starter reached the century mark in pitches was last June 12, a stretch of 117 games. Before the Rockies' streak, the longest string of starters not throwing 100 pitches in a game was held by the Nationals, who went 33 games from Aug. 31, 2011, to April 10,

Jhoulys Chacin on Ground Balls, Curve Balls, and Colorado

Jhoulys Chacin hasn’t thrown a curve ball yet this season. Don’t think he hasn’t noticed. “That was my strikeout pitch,” he said, while agreeing he hasn’t thrown it. But he used it more before the four-man rotation, before the team decided to emphasize ground balls, before he injured his pectoral muscle, and before he learned the benefits of contact. This year, he hasn’t thrown a curve ball.
The curve ball thing has been going on for a while. He threw the pitch 15.6% of the time in his debut and then that whittled away gradually to 6.7% last season. His strikeout rate fell from over 20% (and above average) to 14.3% last year, too. But as he threw the pitch less, he got more ground balls, too. At least until last year.
Last year, the Rockies tried a four-man rotation with a 75-pitch limit. “I really didn’t like it,” Chacin admitted. The 75 pitch limit was strict, and it was hard for the pitchers to compete with that number hanging over their heads. “But I learned,” said Chacin, “I le

He had a biting slider and a changeup that dropped off of the table. Chacin struggled with command, but those who watched him knew what his potential was. After showing signs of brilliance, while being overshadowed by the success of Ubaldo Jimenez, Chacin somehow managed to slip off of the radar for most baseball fans. He showed up to spring training in 2012 with a chance to be the ace. However, those chances were deflated when general manager Dan O'Dowd made comments that Chacin had gained too much weight in the offseason and didn't work hard enough. Eager to prove O'Dowd wrong, Chacin tried to pitch through a hurt arm. After struggling early, the Rockies discovered nerve damage in Chacin's right pectoral mus...

Chacin dazzles for Colorado Rockies in first start at Coors Field since return

The Rockies need Chacin to be the 2010 version.Jhoulys Chacin has arguably been the worst part of a terrible 2012 season for the Colorado Rockies. Before the season began, general manager Dan O'Dowd was on record saying that the righty, expected to be the ace of the pitching staff, was out of shape and that he was disappointed by reports that he didn't work hard in the offseason.Possibly in an effort to prove his general manager wrong, and not look bad, Chacin pitched through shoulder pain throughout spring training.
