Assume the Position: LF

Bad news and good news:
Bad News: The Cubs have terrible prospects at left field. There isn't even really a projectable major-league starter here (maybe Pin-Chieh Chen? Maybe?). It might be more barren than catcher.
Good News: The Cubs are loaded at CF and RF. It's extremely likely that one of those prospects could just slide over and play LF. Generally, that's how it works out. Who knows, maybe Vogelbach will play there if he makes to the big leagues (dying laughing)

Nelson Perez performs in the DWL

Nelson Perez, essentially a non-prospect, tore up the DWL. Good for him, I guess? Pretty hard to get jazzed about .732 OPS AA LF repeaters who are 25, but nice to see.

Top Performers of the Dominican Winter League
The playoffs for the Dominican Winter League (DWL) have begun — and, as such, the regular-season stats for the players in said League are final.
Here are the top performers of the DWL, per SCOUT (a metric explained below, but which, briefly stated, uses regressed inputs to help make sense of small samples).
Best Hitter (Overall): Hector Luna
Hector Luna, who turns 33 in February, isn’t a player about whom one is compelled to think very often — although, to his credit, he’s been slightly better than replacement level in 800-plus major-league plate appearances with five teams since 2004. Also to his credit, he was excellent in the DWL, posting a 29:30 walk-to-strikeout ratio while hitting seven home runs...

Kal Daniels’ Hastily Calculated and Alternate Career Path
As noted in today’s release of the ZiPS projections for the Washington Nationals, Bryce Harper‘s closest comparable at the moment, according to ZiPS, is former Reds outfielder Kal Daniels. As also noted in that post, Kal Daniels was a pretty excellent ballplayer between his age-22 and -26 seasons, during which span he posted a 16.9 WAR over 1,970 plate appearances — i.e. over five wins for every 600 plate appearances.
After that, though, injury — and the subsequent ineffectiveness it caused — stopped Daniels’ career rather abruptly, and he was done with major-league baseball after his age-28 season.
“What if,” one is compelled to wonder, “what if Daniels were — instead of to suffer th

World Series Odds Converted into Projections
Bovada (née Bodog) has published their early odds for the winner of the 2013 World Series. Odds for each of the 30 major-league teams are reproduced below. Also included are the break-even (BE) point (i.e. the likelihood of winning above which a team must have in order for a bet to be profitable) and a generic “projected” probability (i.e. what the odds suggest is the likely chance of each team winning the World Series) calculated by scaling the sum of all break-even percentages to 100%.
Note: the author has assumed, as appears to be customary, that the bettor gets his original stake back in a winning bet. So if the odds are 8/1 — as they are for Toronto — the bettor receives $9 in return for a winning $1 bet, ...

Detroit Signs Catcher Brayan Pena
The American League champion Detroit Tigers signed catcher Brayan Pena on Monday to a one-year deal “likely to be worth less than $1 million,” reports Tony Paul of the Detroit News. Pena, who was originally signed by Atlanta in 2000, played for Kansas City over the last four years, posting something like 0.5 WAR in a little over 800 plate appearances.
Gary Sheffield Is Jason Grilli’s Agent, Apparently
Right-handed reliever Jason Grilli, who posted a 2.06 SIERA and 69 xFIP in 58.2 innings with the Pirates this past season, signed a two-year, $6.75 million contract with Pittsburgh on Monday, reports CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. Of greater note, however, is this: Grilli is represented by former major-leaguer, the ve...

Three Transactions That Just Happened
Here are three transactions that just happened — where, by just, we are understood to mean “last two or three days.”
Arizona Signs Garrett Mock
Right-handed reliever Garrett Mock had some success out of the bullpen with the Nationals in 2008, posting an 89 xFIP- in 91.1 innings. He’s had no major-league success in the meantime, however. He did post a 68:28 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 61.2 innings between the Triple-A affiliates of Boston and Houston in 2012. Also, he’s been signed by Kevin Towers now, who has a reputation for identifying possible reclamation projects.
Milwaukee Signs Jairo Asencio
Right-hander Jairo Asencio was the most dominant reliever by a considerable margin in last year’s iteration of the Dominica...

Iowa
Rizzo left the game with a knee contusion as is listed as day to day. Soto went 1-4 with a 2B in his first game back and Brett Jackson struck out 3 more times.
Smokies
No Game
Daytona
Nelson Perez was 3-4 with a HR and The Greg of Rohan went 2-5. Alcantara continues to impress with his bat in a pitchers league and is hitting .291. Goldstein had a write up about him the other day but I don't have insider so I would imagine he said Alcantara has average speed.

Peoria
Javier Baez went 2-4 and stole a pair of bases as well. I didn't know he had this kind of speed but he has already accumulated 7 SB's and has yet to be caught. The kid can do it all. In low A. He also made 3 errors in one game so Dave Kaplan probably needs to remind him to focus.

Game 16 Thread - Wells vs. Cueto

Cubs break their 6-game losing streak on the strength of Maholm's pitching and a 2-out, 4-run rally in the 2nd. In the minors, Iowa loses 12-7. Sappelt goes yard, Rizzo goes 2/5 with 3 RBI's, Jackson 2/5 with a double and a K. Coleman pitched well enough, 6 IP, 2 ER and 7 K but 4 BB's. The bullpen blew up though, Corpas and Beliveau giving up 9 runs in 2 innings. It got so bad that Blake Lalli and Alfredo Amezaga had to finish the game. Tennessee won 4-2, N. Struck with the win (5 IP, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K). Antigua with 3 scoreless innings out of the pen and Hatley with a scoreless inning for the save. Ha (3/4), Ridling (2/3), Wright (2/3) provided most of the offense. Daytona won 13-2, Jokisch gets the win (5.2 IP/2 ER/3 BB/2 K). 5 doubles, 1 triple and a home run (Nelson Perez) were part of the offensive explosion. Peoria lost 2-1, but can't blame starting pitcher Michael Jensen who went 7 IP, 2 unearned runs, 1 BB, and 6 K.

Cubs Recap for April 19, 2012

Big nights with the bat for Anthony Rizzo and Nate Samson, but not a win in the organization.

@Marlins 5 - Cubs 3; A few brights spots in the game; the bullpen threw 4.1 innings of scoreless ball and they drew 3 walks off Nolasco. But Barney's bases clearing defense-assisted triple was the only big hit of the game and Samardzija was the Samardzija we all know and love. The one that can't throw strikes consistently walking 5 himself in 3.2 IP, while also giving up 8 hits.
@Albuquerque 4 (Dodgers) - Iowa 3; Travis Wood with the start and he gets 5 K's and just one walk in 6.1 IP, but also 9 H and 4 ER and gets hung with the loss. Offensively, it was Anthony Rizzo's world and we're just living in it. Two blasts, numbers 6 and 7 on the year, but it wasn't quite enough offense for Iowa. Dave Sappelt sums it up:
@SappySappelt6 Anthony Rizzo is a Monster this league is child's play for him
@Huntsville 9 (Brewers) - Tennessee 7; Not to be outdone b...

Sonny Gray and three relievers combined to throw a five-hitter as the Midland RiverHounds (Oakland A’s AA affiliate) defeated the Tennessee Smokies 3-1 on Field #2, and Jonathon Mota ripped a two-run home run and Juan Apodaca had three hits, but it wasn’t enough as the Sacramento River Cats (A’s AAA affiliate) outlasted the AAA Iowa Cubs 9-5 on Field #3, in Cactus League Minor League game action this afternoon at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

RHP Matt Loosen was moved up to the Iowa squad from the Tennessee squad and made the start for the I-Cubs, and LHP Austin Kirk was moved up to the Tennessee squad from the Daytona squad and was the starting pitcher for the Smokies, and although they both pitched OK (not great), the two best outings of the day by Cubs pitchers were LHP Eric Jokisch (who led all Cubs minor league pitchers in wins last season), and Tennessee LHP Casey Harman.
Jokisch “piggy-backed” with Kirk and threw 4-2/3 innings of shutout ball, and Harman threw two perfect innin...

Szczur Triples Smokies to Victory

Matt Szczur tripled twice, scored twice and drove-in a run, Justin Bour had two hits and three RBI, and Matt Cerda reached base four times on a double, two singles, and a walk, leading the Tennessee Smokies to a 6-4 victory over the Midland RockHounds (Oakland A’s AA affiliate) on Field #2, but the Sacramento River Cats (A’s AAA affiliate) took advantage of seven walks and bested the Iowa Cubs 9-6 on Field #3, in Cactus League Minor League game action this afternoon at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Just moved up to the Tennessee squad from Daytona, LHP (ex-OF) Kyler Burke got the start for the Smokies, and allowed two runs on three hits (two singles and a double) and a walk in 2.1 IP.
In addition to reaching base four times (in four Plate Appearances), Tennessee 3B Matt Cerda also committed three errors. So he had a full day.
The Cubs Boise/Mesa squad played a contest against the Langley Blaze (a Canadian junior amateur team, and Cub minor league INF Wes Darvill’s alma mater) on Field...

Cubs Minor League Camp Rosters

NRI RHP Marco Carrillo was the first cut from 2012 Cubs MLB Spring Training, and he arrived at Fitch Park Minor League Camp this morning.

In addition to the 62 players left on the Cubs MLB Spring Training roster (39 players on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster, plus 23 non-roster players signed to minor league contracts who received invitations to MLB Spring Training), there are presently 149 players at Fitch Park participating in Minor League Camp.

The players at Minor League Camp are divided into four squads that correspond to the Cubs four “full-season” minor league teams (AAA Iowa, AA Tennessee, Class-A Advanced Daytona, and Full-Season “A” Peoria), plus a 5th squad (known as “Boise/Mesa”) that represents the Cubs two short-season teams (Boise and AZL Cubs) that is gradually built from scratch during the course of Spring Training. (“Boise/Mesa” eventually will morph into the Cubs Extended Spring Training team next month).

Players at Minor League Camp are sometimes initially as...

Indians might have bat they're looking for

With the start of spring training about a month away, the Indians still hadn't acquired the impact bat they had hoped to get at some point during the offseason.

If and when that bat is acquired, it's possible it could be a first baseman, replacing disappointing former phenom Matt LaPorta.

However, should the Indians be unable to trade for or sign as a free agent a first baseman to replace LaPorta, Plan B remains LaPorta himself.

According to general manager Chris Antonetti, the Indians haven't given up on the 27-year-old first baseman, who was the top prospect in the package of prospects the Indians got from Milwaukee in the CC Sabathia trade in 2008, but has been a major disappointment since that trade.

However, Antonetti said LaPorta will have to win the first base job in spring training. The fact that LaPorta has a minor league option left means the Indians can still keep him in the organization without committing to him fully in 2012.

During the offseason, Indians' hitting coach Bruce
