Jameson Taillon and Neil Walker lead Curve to Mother’s Day victory

The Altoona Curve defeated the Richmond Squirrels in walk-off fashion earlier today 2-1. After second baseman Neil Walker tied the score with an RBI single in the eighth inning, Andrew Lambo walked and eventually came around to score from second when pinch-hitter Charlie Cutler hit a line drive to deep center that centerfielder Jarrett Parker couldn’t hold on to. Jameson Taillon got the start and impressed, pitching six scoreless innings, and allowing no runs with eight strikeouts in the no decision outing. All told, the Curve pitchers only allowed two hits in the game.
Jameson Taillon struck out eight batters today.
Taillon shows full repertoire in six solid innings of work
Jameson Taillon improved his ERA to 2.82 today by throwing six innings of shutout baseball. He surrendered only 2 hits, walking 3, and striking out 8. The only downside of Taillon’s effort was a bit of trouble with control, throwing 100 pitches and only registering 59 strikes in the outing. Nonetheless, he was able to over

Prospect Notebook: Lambo a Bright Spot in Altoona; Sadler Shows Promise

It was a rough week for the Altoona Curve, winning only one of their last seven games. The team continues to struggle offensively, a problem compounded by first baseman Matt Curry going on the disabled list with a right hand injury. On the bright side, Andrew Lambo continues to hit for power and Casey Sadler turned in his best start of the season. In addition, Jameson Taillon left his Tuesday start early after taking a hard grounder off his leg.
Andrew Lambo has seven homers on the year with Altoona.
Altoona offensive woes continue, but Lambo a bright spot
Statistically, the Curve have the worst offense in the Eastern League. They are cellar dwellers in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. This week, the team registered five hits or less in five of their seven games, scoring on average 2.43 runs per game. As a result, in spite of several good pitching performances, the team is losing much more than they are winning. Nine of the team’s 15 position players are hitting un

First Pitch: There’s No Reason to Keep Andrew Lambo in Altoona

Andrew Lambo should be in Indianapolis starting over Brett Carroll and Felix Pie. Photo Credit: David Hague.
At the start of the 2013 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates had a lot of options in the outfield. They had to make some difficult cuts at the end of Spring Training, cutting the hot hitting Alex Presley and Felix Pie in favor of Jose Tabata and Travis Snider. The outfield in the majors had some major question marks. Starling Marte wasn’t established, and Snider and Tabata had both seen their prospect stock fall. With question marks on either side of Andrew McCutchen, the team needed some depth in Indianapolis.
That doesn’t seem to be the case now. There’s a #MartePartay every night, it seems. Travis Snider is hitting for a .294/.368/.397 line in 68 at-bats, and only five of those at-bats have come against left-handers. He’d be in a perfect position to platoon with Jose Tabata, but Tabata is 1-for-20 against left-handers. That’s hiding the fact that he’s hitting for a .310/.412/.483 line in 29 a

Prospect Notebook: Vasquez, Curry, and Lambo leading the Altoona offense

Andy Vasquez has been a surprising bright spot in the Altoona offense.
The Curve lost their best hitter when Adalberto Santos went down with a hip injury April 15, and the offense has struggled for noticeable spells in the early season. Santos returned Tuesday night, so there is some optimism he’ll be able to pick up where he left off prior to his injury.
Andy Vasquez has been the team’s best hitter over the past ten games putting up a .417/.432/.556 line, followed by Matt Curry’s .316/.381/.500. Vasquez is a bit old at 25 and has never been all that highly regarded as a prospect, signing out of the Dominican Republic at age 20. His major problem has been plate discipline, so even at points when he’s hit well, his low walk rate and high strikeout rate have made it difficult to project him as anything other than an organizational player.
In a small sample size in 2013, Vasquez has a 6.8% walk-rate about double what it was 2010-2012, and he’s already striking out less so far. There’s not a l

One day, two wins: Taillon, Lambo lead Curve to snap four-game skid

The Altoona Curve picked up two wins today against the Richmond Flying Squirrels at People’s Natural Gas Field. First, Andrew Lambo singled home Charlie Cutler in the 11th inning to end last night’s rain suspended game with a 2-1 victory. Then, Jameson Taillon threw seven shutout innings to pace the Curve to the second win of the day, with Lambo contributing again, this time with two RBIs in the 4-3 victory.
Jameson Taillon had another good start for Altoona.
Taillon continues string of impressive starts
Coming off a ten strikeout effort last week in which he took the loss, Jameson Taillon got his first win of the season pitching seven shutout innings and surrendering only two hits and three walks to go along with six strikeouts. The effort lowered the big right-hander’s season ERA to 1.00, and so far this season he has shown why he is such a highly touted prospect.
The outing didn’t begin as sharp as the outcome suggests, as Taillon took 24 pitches to get through the first inning, walking two and thr

Minor Moves: Polanco to the DL, Lambo Activated From DL

Some minor league transactions that took place today.
**Gregory Polanco has been placed on the West Virginia disabled list. The outfielder left last Thursday’s game with an ankle injury, and hasn’t played since. I’m told that he is progressing well, and is expected back in a week, assuming no set backs.
**Justin Ennis has been transferred from State College to West Virginia.
**Andrew Lambo has been activated off the disabled list in Altoona. Lambo was rehabbing in the GCL after undergoing hamate surgery earlier in the year.
**Christian Marrero, who was acquired for Brian Friday, has been placed on the Altoona disabled list with a left abdominal strain.
