After sweeping the series with the Cubs, the Reds lost the series opener against the Braves last night, 7-4.
Bronson Arroyo had another rough start, giving up 4 runs (earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks through 5.0 innings. Alfredo Simon pitched 2 innings of hitless relief, but Logan Ondrusek gave the Braves their winning margin: 3 runs (earned) on 3 hits and 1 walk in the eighth. It was too late by the time J. J. Hoover closed it out without a hit.
Zack Cozart’s ears must have been burning, because he suddenly pulled out a 2-hole worthy performance, going 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored.

The Reds try to even the record against the Braves tonight. It’s the hot-hitting Homer Bailey (RHP, 1-3, 3.38 ERA) tonight against Kris Medlen (RHP, 1-4, 3.38 ERA). First pitch at 7:10 p.m.

In brief: 5-game losing streak

Last game
Can I just write *shakes head* here and be done with it?
The Reds were swept yesterday by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Friday they got a shaky start from Mike Leake, which maybe isn’t so surprising after all. Saturday they lost Johnny Cueto to what is still a mystery injury.
Yesterday it was another of those hit-the-wall kinds of games. Mat Latos was rocking a shut-out when he entered the seventh inning. Then Michael McKenry knocked a solo shot over the wall to lead off the inning. Two outs and two baserunners and another run later, Latos is out and it’s up to Logan Ondrusek. Ondrusek, though, couldn’t get out of the inning and his inherited runner to score, plus added one of his own. Not to worry! Manny Parra took over to allow the second generation of inherited runners to score.
And that was the prettier of the two innings. Jonathan Broxton…*shakes head*
The Reds have lost 5 in a row and have been outscored 14-34. Final score yesterday: 7-10. But don’t worry: I’m sure things...

Thursday's mixed bag of Reds news and notes

Well, Cincinnati's road trip to St. Louis didn't go so well. After taking game one of the series by scoring nine runs in the final inning, the Reds proceeded to get outscored, 15-1, over the next two games of the series.

I don't know what it is, but Busch Stadium has been a Bermuda Triangle of sorts for the Reds in the past decade. This last series did nothing to help erase that trend.

But as any baseball fan knows, there is always tomorrow, and tomorrow (Friday) begins a fresh series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. A trio of games versus the Buccos may be exactly what Cincy needs to get back on track.

Until then, enjoy a mixed bag of news and notes...

+ Dusty Baker wasted no time in plugging Logan Ondrusek into a game.
Reds place Marshall on DL with tendinitis

Cincinnati Reds left-hander Sean Marshall, who's been bothered for several weeks by left shoulder tendinitis, has been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The move was made retroactive to Monday, and right-hander Logan Ondrusek was recalled from Double-A Pensacola and was expected to arrive in time for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.

Marshall has appeared in one game, working a scoreless inning.

Ondrusek had a 7.59 ERA in 10 spring training appearances and was optioned to Pensacola the day before the opener. In three appearances in the minors, he allowed one hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Reds place Sean Marshall on disabled list, recall Logan Ondrusek from Pensacola

It seems as though the shoulder fatigue southpaw Sean Marshall has been battling lately has finally become too much to bear.

On Wednesday, the Reds placed Marshall on the 15-day disabled list due to shoulder tendinitis.

The move was announced just prior to Cincinnati's series finale against the Cardinals.

Logan Ondrusek will take Marshall's spot on the roster after beginning the season in Double-A Pensacola. Ondrusek will be in uniform this afternoon for the matinee affair and is available to pitch.

Marshall has appeared in just one of the club's eight games in 2013. Dusty Baker was taking a cautious approach with Marshall to let his 30-year-old reliever rest, but Marshall's condition has apparently failed to get significantly better.

Ondrusek appeared in three games for the Blue Wahoos and allowed no runs, one hit, and no walks in 2.1 innings pitched.

Ondrusek was 5-2 with a 3.46 ERA in 63 appearances with the Reds a season ago.

It’s Opening Day for the Major Leagues!

Ok, so I am actually typing this as I watch the Rangers at Astros on Sunday Night Baseball, so technically, Sunday is “Opening Day”, but today is Opening Day here in Cincinnati. It will be strange waiting for a 4pm first pitch, but I guess we don’t have much of a choice. I will be watching the game from the comfort of my home, eating snacks and hopefully watching win #1 of the season. Are any of you guys heading to GABP for the game?
The Reds roster took shape Sunday evening and it led to shaping of the minor league rosters. Logan Ondrusek was optioned to Pensacola in an interesting twist of things. That move pushed Ryan Dennick to Louisville. Dennick was slated to be one of the starters for Pensacola, so with his moving up a spot is now open. My guess would be that Josh Smith will move to the rotation for the time being and eventually head back to the bullpen later in the year. Jose Arredondo was outrighted to Louisville.
The Louisville Bats roster still isn’t official, and as of r...

Reds send reliever Ondrusek to minors

The Reds made their final bullpen moves on Sunday, sending right-handed relievers Logan Ondrusek and Jose Arredondo to the minors.

Ondrusek, who struggled with his control during spring training, was optioned to Double-A Pensacola. Arredondo, who appeared in 66 games last season, was sent outright to Triple-A Louisville. The Reds chose to keep left-hander Manny Parra, who signed a one-year, $1 million deal in February, and right-hander Alfredo Simon, who pitched in 36 games last season.

Reliever Nick Masset went on the 15-day DL, continuing his recovery from shoulder surgery last September.

The Reds designated infielder Jason Donald for assignment to the minors and selected the contract of infielder Cesar Izturis. Infielder Emmanuel Burris, catcher Corky Miller and outfielders Denis Phipps and Derrick Robinson were reassigned to minor league camp.

Reds, Ondrusek avoid arbitration with 2-year deal

Logan Ondrusek and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a two-year contract.

The team announced the deal Thursday night.

Ondrusek, a right-handed reliever, had filed for salary arbitration after going 5-2 with a 3.46 ERA and two saves last season. Teams and players are set to exchange proposed salaries Friday.

Cincinnati still has six players in arbitration: pitchers Homer Bailey, Mat Latos, Mike Leake and Alfredo Simon, and outfielders Shin-Soo Choo and Chris Heisey.

The 6-foot-8 Ondrusek is 15-7 with a 3.45 ERA in three major league seasons, all with the Reds.

The Cincinnati Reds left right-handed reliever Logan Ondrusek off the roster for their division series matchup against the San Francisco Giants.

The Reds announced their roster before Game 1 on Saturday. They are carrying 11 pitchers for the series, with fifth starter Mike Leake and Ondrusek being held out.

Ondrusek had the fourth most appearances on the Reds this season with 63 but struggled late in the year. He had a 4.76 ERA with eight walks and three homers allowed in 11 1-3 innings since Aug. 18.

Cincinnati also is going with just Ryan Hanigan and Dioner Navarro at catcher, leaving Devin Mesoraco off the roster.

Bullpen implodes as Reds lose 9-4 in series finale

Not much went right after the fifth inning for the Reds,
as Chapman and Ondrusek gave up their first runs.

The Reds (19-18) and Mets (21-17) got together for an afternoon bout on Thursday, with Cincinnati looking to sweep the brief two-game series. The big righty Mat Latos went against the knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on Weather Education day at Citi Field in New York. The Redlegs broke it open with a three-run fifth inning which gave them a 4-0 lead, before the Metropolitans rallied and ripped a gaping hole in the game to take a 9-4 lead over the next four innings, and that was the final score.

Here's the good, the very, very bad, and the notables:

The Good
-The Reds offense looked good early on, banging out four runs on eight hits, before everything went wrong.
-Latos drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, as part of the three-run fifth.
-Joey Votto blasted a knuckleball deep to right field for a solo home run (4) in the fourth. He finished 2-4 on the day.
-Ryan Han...

Game 34: Reds 3, Braves 1

The Reds continued their role as NLE spoiler tonight by knocking the Braves back into second place behind the Nationals by winning 3-1.
It was Homer Bailey on the mound to start things off against a formidable Braves’ offense. He worked 6.2 innings, allowing 1 run (earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks. Logan Ondrusek and Aroldis Chapman then came on to put in .2 inning apiece, with Ondrusek being the lucky one to be on the mound when the win came. Sean Marshall closed it out for the save.

Happy birthday to Logan Ondrusek

A happy 27th birthday goes to RHP Logan Ondrusek today. And what better way to celebrate than by counting down the last few days before reporting to Spring Training?

The tall right-hander out of Shiner, Texas is coming off a fine individual season in 2011. In 66 appearances he posted a 5-5 record, 3.23 ERA, and a 1.353 WHIP.

Dusty Baker will undoubtedly look toward Ondrusek to help in the middle innings of games once again in 2012.
