Jacksonville Jaguars Rookie Report Card: OTAs & Minicamps

The sun beat on the backs of the 90 football players hoping to make a lasting impression at Jacksonville Jaguars' minicamp this past week. For most of the them (29 new players will fill a roster spot on this team), rookie minicamp, OTAs and the mandatory three days last week, were an audition for another franchise.Gus Bradley. The Jaguars have more than five weeks off until they meet in the hot sun in Florida for another round of training camp practices that will eventually lead to a final roster of talent new head coach will take on the field.Among those players could be the eight rookies the team drafted in April. While most of the rookies were drafted for defense, there were also players drafted for size (Luke Joeckel), speed (Ace Sanders) and skills (Denard Robinson). Others like Johnathan Cyprien (defensive back) were drafted because they could cover fleet receivers down the field. And there are a handful of undrafted rookies who have left an impression on the coaching staff.H...

Jaguars select Luke Joeckel, Grade B

Joeckel was arguable the best player on the board, but was he the best for the Jaguars?
The Jaguars have a dominant left tackle in Eugene Monroe and a serious lack of a pass-rusher. In the short-term, this doesn’t help the Jaguars at all.
Monroe is a free agent at the end of the year, so I understand the thought process. But if you want Monroe, just sign him. Left tackles are worth paying. If they choose to let Monroe walk because they have Joeckel, this is basically a wasted pick.

Eugene Monroe, Jaguars Won't Talk Contract Until After 2013 Season

Left tackle Eugene Monroe may be the closest thing to a franchise centerpiece that the Jaguars have, but that hasn't led new general manager Dave Caldwell to talk extension with the offensive tackle and Monroe doesn't expect that they'll be talking any time soon either, according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

"I do [think about it] but my focus is on always getting better," he said today in the Jaguars' locker room. "Whether the deal is up, it doesn't dictate how I train because I'm the same way every day. I don't focus on it. We have a new system and I'm focused on soaking in all the new information and improving my game."

Monroe, 25, was the first-round selection of the Jaguars in the 2009 NFL Draft and was the team's starting left tackle right away. While it took some time for him to settle into the role, Monroe has developed into one of the better left tackles in the NFL.

Jacksonville Jaguars LT Eugene Monroe Leaves Practice Early with a Head Injury

The Jacksonvile Jaguars just had another setback as LT Eugene Monroe was carted off of the field with a head injury. It doesn’t seem to be serious, but it seems that the Jaguars are going to be cautious with this injury. Monroe is not likely to play against the New Orleans Saints on Friday, likely to be replaced by Cameron Bradfield. as a result, it seems like Cameron Bradfield will get another chance to face off against first string players. After taking his lumps against Justin Tuck of the Giants, he will now have to face off against Will Smith of the Saints.

Jaguars OT Eugene Monroe Travels To New Orleans

Jaguars left tackle Eugene Monroe left practice midway through on Wednesday after suffering a blow to the head. The scare was that Monroe might have suffered a concussion, but nothing at that point was conclusive. "He got hit in the head in an earlier period and we’re just going to make sure he’s fine," head coach Mike Mularkey said on Wednesday after practice. "I don’t think it’s anything serious but we’ll check it out. As far as I know he got hit and went in early." Monroe will be tested for a concussion and did travel with the team to New Orleans, according to Mark Long of the Associated Press, but his status for the game is still unknown at this point.
What do you do when your primary weapons are either holding out, getting in trouble with the law or failing to run routes and almost half of the guys who are supposed to protect you in the pocket go down to injury?
Whenever someone discovers the answer, be sure to tell Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Laurent Robinson, Cecil Shorts and Mike Thomas are the top receivers on the Jaguars’ roster behind rookie Justin Blackmon. The team recently released Lee Evans and added Demetrius Williams.
Like Evans, Williams also spent time with the Ravens. And like Williams, Brian Robiskie also was with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Jaguars.

Jaguars LT Monroe leaves practice with head injury

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without starting left tackle Eugene Monroe for Friday's preseason game at New Orleans.

Monroe left the practice field on a cart Wednesday after getting hit in the head during drills. Team doctors were checking him for a possible concussion, and coach Mike Mularkey says the results will determine whether Monroe plays against the Saints.

Losing Monroe would be the latest setback for an already shuffled offensive line.

Guard Will Rackley missed the preseason opener because of a high-ankle sprain, is still wearing a walking boot and will be sidelined at least another week. Backup guard Jason Spitz is out at least a month with a foot injury, and reserve center is John Estes is likely out for the season with a knee injury.

Jaguars, linemen shoot for consistency in camp

When the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton with their first two picks in the 2009 draft, it was thought the team had acquired bookend tackles for the next decade.

While that may still be the case, it hasn't happened yet.

Injuries have resulted in Monroe starting at left tackle and Britton at right tackle in the same game just seven times the last two years. All came in the first half of the 2010 season. Britton suffered a shoulder injury in the eighth game against Kansas City, and two days later was placed on injured reserve.

Last year, a back injury restricted Britton to only four games and three starts. Two came as a left guard and in the one game he started at right tackle, against New Orleans, Monroe was out due to a shoulder injury.

''I think that with Eben and myself in there, consistently healthy, without guys shuffling in and out of the line, I think (quarterback) Blaine (Gabbert) will be confident with that,'' Britton said. ''He'll be conf

Jaguars' bookend tackles look for injury-free year

When the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton with their first two picks in the 2009 draft, the team thought it had acquired bookend tackles for the next decade.

That may still be the case, but it hasn't been that way the past two years.

Injuries have resulted in Monroe starting at left tackle and Britton at right just seven times the last two years.

That could change in 2012. Both opened training camp injury-free, and even though Monroe has missed the last couple days due to a leg ailment, he should return to action by next week.

That's good news for quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who was sacked at least once in all 15 games he played in a year ago.

Jaguars' Monroe misses practice with ankle injury

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without starting left tackle Eugene Monroe for Sunday's season finale against Indianapolis.

Defensive tackle C.J. Mosley stepped on Monroe's left ankle in practice Thursday, and Monroe was wearing a walking boot Friday. He sat out practice and was listed as questionable for the game.

Monroe says the injury doesn't seem that bad and he expects to play against the Colts. If not, rookie Cameron Bradfield would start against Pro Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney.

The Jaguars will be without receiver Cecil Shorts (hamstring). Safety Dwight Lowery (shoulder) and tight end Zach Potter (calf) are doubtful. Fellow safety Dawan Landry missed the last two days of practice because of an illness, but interim coach Mel Tucker expects Landry to play.
