Latest Dolphins news on Dustin Keller, Jake Long, and Sean Smith

I think it’s safe to say that Day 2 of free agency wasn’t quite as exciting as Day 1. On Day 1, the Dolphins added Mike Wallace, Dannell Ellerbe, and Philip Wheeler, while resigning Chris Clemons. They also cut ties with Karlos Dansby and Kevin Burnett. On Day 2, the Dolphins spoke with players and most notably, brought in Dustin Keller for a visit. Perhaps the Dolphins lack of transactions has to do with them waiting on Jake Long and Sean Smith. Each situation is fluid, but it seems like we will have some clarification on each by this time tomorrow.

Jake Long
Long spent almost all day yesterday taking a physical with the Rams. Due to his recent injuries, the Rams want to be 100% sure that they are not getting an injured player, if the two sides agree to terms. The Rams took Jake and his wife Jackie out to dinner last night, which Jackie tweeted, was ‘great’. There were reports yesterday afternoon that turned out to be false, claiming that Jake and the Ra

Mike Wallace press conference highlights

The Miami Dolphins held a press conference this morning and welcomed back Chris Clemons, while also introducing Mike Wallace to the South Florida media. We’ll focus on Mike Wallace’s comments, because honestly, Chris Clemons was on the team last year and didn’t have anything too exciting to say. Before we get to that, the below infographic was posted on Dolphins.com and shows how the Dolphins new #1 receiver stacks up against other receivers in the NFL.

Dolphins get younger, faster with Wallace, Ellerbe, and Wheeler

The Miami Dolphins entered free agency with a lot of pressure to improve their roster. Jeff Ireland knows that 2013 is a make or break year for him….and on the first day of free agency, he showed that he is swinging for the fences. Shortly after the new league year started at 4pm on Tuesday, the Dolphins quickly agreed to terms of a deal with Mike Wallace. The deal is for 5 years and will be worth $60 million with $30 million guaranteed. The Dolphins plan to hold a press conference Wednesday morning to introduce Wallace.

The Dolphins weren’t done there. They actively pursued Jared Cook, the top tight end on the market, but ultimately lost him to the Rams. The Dolphins are still in the market for a tight end….more on that in a bit. News quickly leaked shortly after that the Dolphins had come to terms with a free agent of their own, Chris Clemons. Clemons signed a one year deal, meaning the starting safety combo will return in 2013. Clemons will need to sho

Dolphins Re-Sign FS Chris Clemons

The Miami Dolphins have re-signed starting free safety Chris Clemons to a one-year deal, according to league sources.

Clemons, the team's 2009 fifth-round pick, started 32 games in the four season he played for the Dolphins.

The former Clemson standout had his most productive season as a starting free agent in 2012, contributing 98 tackles and two interceptions in his first year being paired with strong safety Reshad Jones.

Clemons becomes the fourth Dolphins player the team has re-signed this offseason. Receiver Brian Hartline and backup quarterback Matt Moore re-signed last week, and defensive tackle Randy Starks had the franchise tag placed on him.

Clemons currently lines up next to standout safety Reshad Jones.Clemons grabbed a pair of interceptions and defensed four passes in 2012.
Dolphins Re-Sign S Chris Clemons

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Dolphins re-signed FS Chris Clemons to a one-year contract.

Clemons, 27, was a big contributor for the Dolphins this season. He tallied 99 tackles and two interceptions while playing in all 16 games.
Miami seems likely to lose free agent CB Sean Smith, but keeping Clemons at least maintains some stability in their secondary.

Dolphins CB Sean Smith, FS Chris Clemons Become Unrestricted Free Agents

According to league sources starting cornerback Sean Smith and starting free safety Chris Clemons will become unrestricted free agents at midnight, and it appears the odds of both returning to Miami are declining.

Smith, the Dolphins' starter the past four seasons, is viewed as one of the top cornerbacks on the free agent market.

Smith's size (6-foot-3), press coverage skills and durability should entice teams looking to upgrade their boundary cornerback spot. He'll compete with Detroit's Chris Houston, Carolina's Chris Gamble, Philadephia's Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie, Atlanta's Brent Grimes, Jacksonville's Derrick Cox, New England's Aqib Talib, Pittsburgh's Keenan Lewis, Tampa Bay's E.J. Biggers and Baltimore's Cary Williams for his share of the free agent cornerback market.

Dolphins Looking To Lock Up WR Brian Hartline, SS Chris Clemons?

The Dolphins have remained mostly quiet in their intentions on what to do with $43.9 million of cap space to this point, but The Miami Herald reported Tuesday that the Dolphins have "discretely targeted" both wide receiver Brian Hartline and safety Chris Clemons with the hope of signing the players to extensions before the league year begins on March 12.

Hartline had a career-high 74 catches for 1,083 yards in 2012 and would serve as an ideal No. 2 receiver if Jeff Ireland succeeds in giving Ryan Tannehill a top target this offseason. Clemons started all 16 games last season and registered a career-best 99 tackles.

Neither player should be considered a franchise cornerstone, but both can be pieces of the puzzle. And if the team's biggest goal right now is continuing the development of Tannehill, keeping his favorite target in town makes a lot of sense.

Dolphins Have Held “Extensive Discussions” With FA’s Brian Hartline & Chris Clemons

According to the Miami Herald, a league sources has informed them that the Dolphins have held ”extensive discussions” with impending free agents Brian Hartline and Chris Clemons.
The report adds that Miami could look to “kick-start” further negotiations at next week’s NFL Combine.
Clemons, 27, was a big contributor for the Dolphins this season. He tallied 99 tackles and two interceptions, but played in all 16 games. Pro Football Focus rated him slightly above average, so he stands a reasonable chance of securing decent contract on the open market.
Hartline, 26, was reportedly “irritated” after hearing the Dolphins initial contract offer. From all accounts, he had a much better season than most expected. He finished with 74 receptions for 1,083 yards receiving, but only caught one touchdown as surprising as that is.
The Dolphins have made it pretty clear that they have no intentions of overpaying their free agents, but they clearly would like to keep these two. We’ll have to see if t...

Dolphins Gameplan: Back to basics for Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins may be on a short week, but if you listen to the Dolphins’ players, they’re anxious to get back on the field. After a humiliating spanking on Sunday, the Dolphins can’t wait to get back on the field to show the rest of the NFL that the team that showed up Sunday, wasn’t really them. Kevin Burnett said “let’s play football, see what you’re made of’ when asked how the team will respond. Chris Clemons called the game a ‘must win’. Nolan Carroll suggested that the Dolphins might have become complacent and started believing the hype surrounding them. None of the talk matters tomorrow night. With the Dolphins weak playoff chances on life support, the team needs a win, anyway….anyhow.
To beat the Bills, the Dolphins will need to get back to basics. Run the football effectively…..Control the clock….Limit turnovers….Stop the run. Pretty simply, right? The Dolphins coaching staff have a tough challenge this week because time was limited. It seems as tho

Jets' Mangold in, Dolphins' Clemons out for MNF

New York Jets center Nick Mangold is active and will start Monday night's game against the Miami Dolphins.
A high ankle sprain cost Mangold two games before he returned against New England last week. He was limited during practice on Friday and Saturday.
The Dolphins will be without safety Chris Clemons, who was inactive with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Reshed Jones.
Miami running back Daniel Thomas was active for the game after missing a contest and being listed as questionable with a nagging hamstring injury.
