Philadelphia Eagles: Chip Kelly testing players’ versatility

WR Jason Avant is happy to play wherever his team needs him. Image via Sports-Kings.com.
We’ve heard much about Chip Kelly’s energetic and efficient style of running Philadelphia Eagles practice: the loud music, the nonstop pace. But Kelly has more tricks up his sleeve and is having his offensive players try their hand on defense in practice.
So far, TE Clay Harbor has taken turns at linebacker, “to be more versatile.” Harbor says that practice at the position is only for “emergency situations,” but could Kelly be trying to find other possibilities for Harbor to remain on the roster with three other tight ends on the Eagles’ roster, including Brent Celek and 2nd-round draft pick and Stanford standout Zach Ertz?
If we know anything about Kelly at this stage, it’s that he continues to keep us guessing.
WR Jason Avant took turns in the defensive backfield last week and is pleased to be considered in other aspects of the game. Avant has already demonstrated his versatility with his cont...

Could Eagles and Colts Make a Huge Draft Day Trade?

Could the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts pull off a big trade during the 2013 NFL Draft? Bare with me for a moment as I explain my reasoning for this crazy trade idea… Back in March, Colts owner Jim Irsay caused quite a stir on Twitter when he tweeted about the Colts landing a “whopper” of wide receiver. This sparked a firestorm of speculation that included the Eagles sending Jeremy Maclin over to Indy. Apparently, it wasn’t a trade the Colts were trying to work out, but rather a free agent signing (that fell through). However, Irsay did state that the team wants to add another wide receiver. They did end up signing Darrius Heyward-Bey to a one-year deal. However, DHB is hardly the “whopper” that Irsay was hoping for. The reasoning why everyone speculated that the whopper could have been Jeremy Maclin was twofold: First, Colts GM Ryan Grigson has strong ties to the Eagles due to spending eight years in Philly. The Eagles and Colts have made several trades since las...

Jeremy Maclin has gotten a "bad rap" as guy who avoids contact after a catch....it's getting out of hand.

I was doing a late-night jam with J. "Woody" Wood over at OTI when the subject of Maclin came up. We both agreed that Tommy Lawlor is one of our favorite Eagles writers. His latest article is entitled "The Chip Effect". If you haven't checked out his most recent remarks, take a gander:
	http://igglesblitz.com/

In the article Lawlor talks about how Chip Kelly may be the one head coach in a perfect position to get maximum effort and also downfield blocking out of our speedy wideouts DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

To my chagrin, Lawlor actually referred to Maclin with a pedestrian dig as "Self-Tacklin' Jeremy Maclin"...

Maybe this was just an example of Lawlor's wry sense of humor. Maybe he didn't really mean it to be vindictive.

But I was inspired to challenge the myth of Maclin as a guy who tack...

Eagles rumors: Philly not shopping Jeremy Maclin

There has been speculation that the Philadelphia Eagles are attempting
to trade Jeremy Maclin, but Geoff Mosher of CSN Philly reports the team isn’t
actively shopping the wide receiver.

Despite the fact that Maclin is entering the final year of
his rookie contract, a team source told Mosher that the Eagles intend to hang
on to the fifth-year pro.

Philadelphia made Maclin a first-round pick in 2009, but he
still hasn’t surpassed the 1,000 yard mark in a single season. He’s also dealt
with injuries, as he’s only played in a full slate of 16 games once.

Still, Mosher notes that the only way the Eagles would trade
the wide receiver is if “another team made them an irresistible offer.”

Maclin’s name has been tied to the Indianapolis Colts ever
since owner Jim Isray indicated that he was nearing a deal for a wide receiver.
However, Mosher notes that there have been no indications that the Eagles and
Colts have discussed Maclin.

There have been some rumors buzzing around that the Philadelphia Eagles are looking to trade wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.
According to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com, the Eagles aren’t looking to trade Maclin.
There’s some buzz out there that #Eagles are shopping Jeremy Maclin, some of it created by Colts owner Jim Irsay. It’s not true, I’m told.

Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin Says Lack Of Respect Among Players Hurt The Team

Jeremy Maclin’s career began with consecutive trips to the playoffs, but he’s never been part of a team that advanced past the first round.

“I think change needs to come from everywhere,” Maclin said, when asked if the Eagles’ problem had more to do with personnel or attitude. “I think we’re definitely a talented group of guys individually. I think the team unity probably wasn’t there this year. I think we’ve got to respect each other. If you respect somebody, you’re more willing to go out there and play for that person or play for a purpose. I think the lack of respect that maybe some guys have for other guys definitely hurt us.”

Maclin stopped short of saying the team quit, but he suggested that the roster Reid, Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie had assembled had a serious chemistry problem.

“I do think the lack of… I guess, how everybody viewed each other,” Maclin said. “I don’t think everybody viewed each other like a team should.

Eagles Shopping WR Jeremy Maclin During The Offseason?

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that the Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin “could be a potential trade chip in off-season.“
McLane adds that DeSean Jackson‘s $47 million contract extension makes it unlikely that any team would be willing to trade for him and the fact Maclin is a similar type of receiver could at least be enough for them to shop him around the league to see what they could get in return.
Maclin has yet to put together the breakout type of season that many believed he was capable of producing. Pro Football Focus actually has him rated as the No. 93 best receiver out of 104 qualifying players this year. The good news is that Maclin is still just 24 years old and will be under contract for a reasonable salary of $2.853 million next season. Philadelphia has done a great job of maximizing the value of their players in trade negotiations, so it seems likely that they would only consider parting ways with Maclin if they were able to secure a reasonable return.

Eagles might soon lock up Jeremy Maclin and Dominique Rodger-Cromartie

According to Eric Edholm of ProFootballWeekly.com, there’s a good chance the Philadelphia Eagles will soon sign both wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromarite to contract extensions.
DRC’s contract is up after this season and Maclin’s is scheduled to expire at the end of the 2013 season.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman hinted at the possibility that both players will get taken care of soon.
“We are going to be a draft-and-develop type of team that tries to retain as many of our own players as we can,” Roseman said. “We tried to do that in the offseason with Todd and Evan and DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy, and I think that’s going to be the model for the foreseeable future.”

Philadelphia Eagles to ‘mix and match’ at receiver to replace the injured Jeremy Maclin in Week 3

Image via GCobb.com
After losing center Jason Kelce for the season in their home opener against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2, the Philadelphia Eagles offense took two more hits on Friday when both King Dunlap and starting wide receiver Jeremy Maclin were ruled out of the Birds’ Week 3 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
While he overcame injury last week to play most of the Baltimore game, that will not be the case this time around for Jeremy Maclin. The wideout practiced on a limited basis on Thursday but was ruled out for Week 3 on Friday after no progress was seen in his recovery.
On missing the starting receiver, Andy Reid said
I’ve always said that if somebody misses then it’s another man’s opportunity. I expect the other guys to step up and play well.”
Reid went on to state that the team’s plan to replace Maclin will be through “mixing and matching” players. Riley Cooper is also out of Sunday’s game, but the Eagles found some great talent at receiver this offseason, includin...

Eagles Concerned With Jeremy Maclin's Hip Injury?

Philadelphia wideout Jeremy Maclin (hip) appears to be a concern for the Eagles as they worked out free agents Brian Robiskie and Demarco Sampson on Wednesday, according to Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer.Fantasy Spin:If the Eagles are concerned then fantasy owners should be worried. Maclin produced a touchdown in each of the Eagles' first two contests and works well with Michael Vick. This would be a huge loss for fantasy owners if he's out an extended length of time.

Breakout year for Eagles’ Jeremy Maclin?

Is Jeremy Maclin headed for a breakout season? If you ask the Eagles, he is. When the Philadelphia Enquirer asked Eagles coaches to name one player at any position who will make his first Pro Bowl this year, they “didn’t hesitate” to name Jeremy Maclin. A former 1st round pick, Maclin has never had a 1000 yard season, but caught 63 passes for 859 yards and 5 touchdowns in 13 games last season despite never being fully healthy. Now reportedly fully healthy, Maclin is definitely impressing at minicamp. He could easily have his first 1000 yard season this year. He could be a buy low player in fantasy leagues.
