Cardinals Activate RB Beanie Wells, Release LB Jamaal Westerman

The Cardinals activated RB Beanie Wells off the short-term injured reserve list and released Jamaal Westerman.
Wells (turf toe) was placed on I.R. with a designation to return on Sept. 26 and began practicing on Nov. 7. Before the injury, Wells had 29 carries for 76 yards in three games.
Westerman appeared in five games for Arizona this season and made one tackle.
Wells is expected to return to the lineup this weekend when the Cardinals host the Rams. Source: Pro Football Weekly Attached Thumbnails

Cardinals activate RB Wells, release LB Westerman

The Arizona Cardinals have activated Beanie Wells from the NFL's new injured/designated to return list, clearing the way for the running back to play Sunday against St. Louis.

Wells has been sidelined since sustaining a severe turf toe injury against Philadelphia in Week 3. The league's new injured/designated to return list required Wells to be inactive for eight weeks, which meant that he missed seven games. He returned to practice last week.

Wells' return will be a boost to a running game that ranks 30th out of 32 NFL teams. The time off also allowed Wells to rest his surgically repaired knee, which was still bothering him at the time of the toe injury.

To make room on the roster, the Cardinals released linebacker Jamaal Westerman.

Cardinals OLB Schofield done for season

Cardinals outside linebacker O'Brien Schofield tweeted Monday night that he will miss the remainder of the season.

I'm out for the season. I'm sorry Cardinal fans. But I will be back and stronger then ever. This yr was just a preview of why is to Come. O'Brien (@Ob_Scho) November 6, 2012
Schofield, a starter who is second on the team with 3.5 sacks and fourth on the team with 34 tackles, injured his ankle in Sunday's loss to the Packers in Green Bay. He was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday, and while the Cardinals did not release results, Schofield's tweet indicated that the results weren't promising.

The Cardinals' depth chart lists veteran Jamaal Westerman as Schofield's backup, but Westerman has just one tackle this season in limited playing time. Veteran Quentin Groves, who has 17 tackles and two sacks this year while playing primarily behind Sam Acho at the other outside linebacker spot, is more likely to move into the lineup.

A fourth-round pick in 2010, Schofiel

Dolphins waive Cunningham, Westerman

The Dolphins released defensive end Jamaal Westerman and sixth-round pick B.J. Cunningham. Cunningham, a wide receiver from Michigan State, and Westerman were part of the Dolphins' roster cuts ahead of Friday's 9 p.m. ET deadline to reduce rosters to the 53-man regular-season limit. Westerman joined the Dolphins in March when he wasn't tendered a contract by the New York Jets. The Rutgers product had 19 special-teams tackles for the Jets and 3.5 sacks as a backup outside linebacker. Teams can also begin forming their practice squad Saturday.

Dolphins cut Bell, sign two defensive players

Strong safety Yeremiah Bell was released by the Miami Dolphins, who also signed linebacker Jamaal Westerman from the division-rival Jets and re-signed defensive tackle Ryan Baker.

Bell led the team with 107 tackles last season, but was also bothered by a turf toe injury. Originally a sixth-round pick in 2003, Bell started all but one game over the past four seasons and has the reputation of being a big hitter. But the Dolphins will clear 4.3 million in salary cap space with the move.

Westerman was an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers signed by the Jets in 2009, and has started three of 36 career games. He had 3.5 of his 4.5 career sacks last season, and can also play special teams in Miami.

He had surgery after the season to repair a groin that troubled him throughout the year.
Baker was signed by the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie out of Purdue in 2009. He appeared in just two games, registering one tackle, last season.

Dolphins Agree To Terms With Free Agent LB Jamaal Westerman

According to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with former Jets linebacker Jamaal Westerman. The 6'3", 255 pound three-year veteran registered 32 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a pair of forced fumbles last season. Westerman is a low-risk, high-reward signing. It's unclear what his role with the team will be, but based on his performance last season, he should get a chance to work into Miami's linebacker rotation.
Jets Place Original Tender On Maybin; Mulligan, Cole, Westerman Now Unrestricted

According to Brian Costello of the NY Post the Jets have placed an original first-round tender on OLB Aaron Maybin while renouncing the rights to TE Matthew Mulligan (if you listen closely you can literally hear Jets fans cheering wildly), DB Marquice Cole and OLB Jamaal Westerman. None of these moves are particularly surprising, but these moves combined with the extensions of Sanchez and Pouha mark what will undoubtably be a busy start to free agency for Mike Tannenbaum. The Jets picked up Maybin from the trash heap of the Bills before last season as he was considered a bust during his...

New York Jets: Last Second Free Agency Considerations

The NFL free agency floodgates open at 4 PM today. Here are a few last minute thoughts related to the New York Jets before anything can become official later this afternoon -
1. Jamaal Westerman, Matthew Mulligan, and Marquice Cole weren’t tendered, leaving them unrestricted free agents. Mulligan is a goner, which is a good thing unless you are in favor of penalty yardage. Rex Ryan is a big Cole fan and he is a very good special teams player, so I would expect the Jets to make a strong push to resign him. Westerman could probably go either way, I am sure Greg Schiano will want to bring his former college player in for a visit to Tampa Bay. How hard the Jets work to bring him back, will likely depend on their luck bringing in other linebackers in free agency.
2. Bryan Thomas gave an interview yesterday to Jenny Vrentas of The Star Ledger about his desire to return to the team. It makes sense for the Jets to monitor his progress rehabbing from his injury last year and then consider b...

Jets LB Jamaal Westerman Underwent Surgery For A Torn Groin

Jets LB Jamaal Westerman, Rex Ryan's "designated pass rusher," just underwent surgery in the past two weeks over a torn groin, according to Jenny Vrentas of The Star-Ledger. Westerman played all 16 games with the tear, not realizing the severity of it until after the season was over. Westerman recorded 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Perhaps this helps explain why Westerman was not able to develop into the pass rushing force that Rex had initially declared him to be. Westerman is a restricted free agent now, so it will be interesting to see how the team deals with him after the poor season he had. Source: SBNation.com Attached Thumbnails

Westerman Regains Starting Role

Following a welcome home-esque performance by Jamaal Westerman on Sunday against the Washington Redskins, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine announced the linebacker has reclaimed his starting role in the base defense from Garrett McIntyre.
Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said Jamaal Westerman has supplanted Garrett McIntyre as the starting outside linebacker in the base defense. McIntyre had started the past three games. Westerman started against the Dolphins in October.
“I could say that,” Pettine said when asked if Westerman is ahead of McIntyre. “That’s good competition between those two.”

New York Jets: Westerman Provides Shot In Arm To Linebackers

The New York Jets have missed outside linebacker Bryan Thomas since his season ending injury in week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens. It has been clear the impact Aaron Maybin has provided to the Jets. Yet, he isn’t a traditional outside linebacker and is used specifically as a pass rusher, primarily out of a sprinter’s stance on the defensive line. The carousel of players attempting to replace Thomas began with Jamaal Westerman, then moved to Josh Mauga, and most recently to Garrett McIntyre.
After failing to lock down the job in his first attempt, Westerman replaced a benched McIntyre in the base defense starting in the second half against Washington. He responded with 5 tackles, a sack, and 2 tackles for a loss. It wasn’t his first batch of impact plays in the 2011 season, as he has 3.5 sacks so far and forced a safety against New England a few weeks back.
Despite lacking size, Westerman provides much needed speed to a painfully slow linebacker group. He also looked much improved...
