2013 Packers Position Group Analysis: Kickers & Specialists

Overview: To kick off the next series of evaluations on AllGreenBayPackers.com, the ALLGBP staff are going to be analyzing each position group starting off with the specialists. Overall, the specialists did a pretty good job keeping their names off the papers and blogs, outside of about 6 weeks of utter CROSBPOCALYPSE.
Where We Are Now
Here are the current suspects;

LS Brett Goode (Undrafted, 2008)
P Tim Masthay aka Ginger Wolverine (Undrafted, 2010)
K Mason Crosby (6th round, 2007)

So that’s where we are. Not much to report here; specialists are often drafted in the later rounds or not at all, and the Packers are no different, only using a 6th round pick on Crosby and picking up both Goode and Masthay off the free agent street.

Goode: Goode again finished the season ...

Packers Tim Masthay: 2012 Player Evaluation and Report Card

1) Introduction: After the disasters that were Derrick Frost and Jeremy Kapinos, Tim Masthay was a godsend. While Masthay will probably never be known for his big leg, Masthay’s forte is his accuracy and his “Aussie style” punts. Much like long snapper Brett Goode and Mason Crosby, Masthay was also the recipient of a contract extension this year, a 5-year $6.005 million contract, which settles down the kicking unit for the next couple years at least. Masthay has brought back consistency to punts and in stark contrast to the up and down season that fellow kicker Mason Crosby faced this year, Masthay was good from opening day to the divisional championship.

Packers Midseason Grades: Special Teams

Packers P Tim Masthay has been excellent in special team.
Special teams wraps up our midseason Packers grades report.
I feel like parent-teacher conferences are now over and it’s time for the student (the Packers) to try and find a way to get an ‘A’ on the final report card while the parents (Packers fans) keep nagging the kids to get their homework done and turn off the video games.
If you missed it, here are our grades for the offense and defense.
Kickoffs: A-
When the Packers are kicking off, it’s usually a good time to grab a snack or refill your beverage.
Out of Mason Crosby’s 47 kickoffs, 26 have went for touchbacks, ranking the Packers 10th in touchback percentage. When opponents do return it, they don’t go far, averaging only 24.4 yards with a long of 38.
This unit also forced a fumble that should’ve ended the game against New Orleans, but the refs botched the call.
It appeared that Crosby had at least one angle kickoff against the Cardinals where he tried to use the sidelin...

Masthay is Special Teams Player of the Week

Green Bay Packers punter Tim Masthay has been honored as the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in Green Bay's victory over Chicago.

Masthay is now the first punter to be named Special Teams Player of the Week in each of his first three NFL seasons. He was also honored with the award in Week 8 of 2010 and Week 13 of 2011.

In the second quarter of Thursday's win, Masthay tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal to tight end Tom Crabtree.

Masthay, 25, placed three of his punts inside the 20-yard line and had a net average of 42.0 yards per punt. With the dangerous Devin Hester back deep to return his punts, Masthay limited him to just eight total return yards.

Packers score TD on fake field goal

The first touchdown of this seasons installment of Thursday Night Football was scored by the Green Bay Packers against the Chicago Bears, and it was pretty epic.
The Packers scored the only touchdown of the first half off of a beautifully designed fake field goal attempt in which Tim Masthay popped the ball to Tom Crabtree who made all the right moves to scamper 27 yards into the endzone.

Masthay: 'I believed I had the leg'

GREEN BAY, Wis. This was it. One more try. One last attempt at making it in the NFL. For punter Tim Masthay, if he didn't stick in Green Bay after signing with the Packers in 2010, he was planning to put an end to his short-lived professional football career and figure out what career path to try next.

Two years later, while continuing to punt with great success in Green Bay, Masthay won't need to worry about the next step in his life anytime soon after signing a lucrative contract extension with the Packers worth more than 5.4 million over the next four seasons.

"In my mind, I was kind of thinking, 'I'm giving it this full go right here, and if I make it, awesome; if not, I'll move on,'" Masthay said.

Masthay began his NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts in 2009 after going undrafted out of the University of Kentucky. While trying to make the Colts roster, Masthay got married. But less than a month after his nuptials, he was waived by Indianapolis.

Punter Masthay agrees to extension with Packers

The agent for Tim Masthay says the Green Bay Packers punter has agreed to a contract extension with the team.

Agent Jonathan Rabinowitz says the deal is for four years. Multiple media outlets reported the move Friday morning. The team has not confirmed the deal.

Masthay originally signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent out of Kentucky in 2009, but was waived in August and was signed by the Packers in January 2010. He won a training camp battle to claim the starting job.

After steadily improving during the 2010 season, he set franchise records for gross (45.6 yards) and net (38.6) punting averages last season.

Reports: Packers, Masthay agree to extension

GREEN BAY, Wis. As the punter for the NFL's highest-scoring team, Tim Masthay doesn't get on the field very often. But when he does, the 25-year-old is very effective.

With Masthay set to become a restricted free agent after this season, the Green Bay Packers and their third-year punter have agreed to a four-year, 5.465 million contract extension, according to multiple reports.

Masthay punted only 55 times last season, and 27 other NFL punters were used more. In fact, Masthay had 50 fewer attempts than the league's busiest punter last season, St. Louis' Donnie Jones.

After going undrafted out of Kentucky in 2009, Masthay started his career with the Indianapolis Colts but was waived soon after.

Once in Green Bay, Masthay beat out Chris Bryan during 2010 training camp and has since solidified a position that had been cycling through a new starter on an almost annual basis. Jon Ryan punted in Green Bay in 2006 and '07, Derrick Frost took 75 percent of the punts in 2008, and Jeremy Kampin

The Packers signed punter Tim Masthay to a four-year, $5.5 million contract extension that could keep in Green Bay until the end of the 2016 season. Masthay received a $1.2 million signing bonus. He's entering the final year of his rookie deal -- which remains unchanged at $540,000 in base salary -- and could have become a restricted free agent in March 2013. The deal was signed on the first day of training camp but was not announced by the Packers. Masthay, 25, was 15th in the NFL in gross average at 45.6 yards per attempt.

4) Player’s highlights/low-lights: Masthay’s net average of 38.6 yards per punt was the best net by a Packers punter in 48 years. Lowlights have to be whenever Mashtay stepped on the field because, well, that meant the Packers were punting.

Masthay gives Green Bay another weapon

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- As many weapons as the Green Bay Packers have on offense, they have another in the rare occasion their high-powered scoring machine sputters: punter Tim Masthay.

Though quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the Packers averaging an NFL-best 35.0 points and ranked fourth in total offense at 405.3 yards, the Packers know they can count on their second-year punter to flip the field or pin opponents deep when necessary -- especially as the Wisconsin weather turns wintry.

"Tim's a big-time weapon," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday. "Field position is so important. Especially as we enter into winter football, it will be an even bigger emphasis. He's been doing a great job putting that ball inside the 10-yard line." rendering Masthay a spectator on many Sundays.

Masthay one of top NFC players of the week

Packers punter Tim Masthay has been named the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against the New York Giants. Masthay placed four of his five punts inside the 20-yard line in the Packers 38-35 win at Met Life Stadium. He had a net average of 44.2 yards per punt and allowed zero return yards. He placed four of his five punts inside the 15-yard line, including a 49-yard punt in the third quarter that was downed by Jarrett Bush at the one-yard line. The only punt that wasnt downed inside the 20-yard line was a 55-yarder from his own 20-yard line.

Masthay is the first player in team history to place at least four punts inside the 20-yard line in consecutive games since the statistic began in 1976. In his second season from Kentucky, this is Masthays second career Player of the Week Award. Masthay (two times) and Craig Hentrich are the only punters in franchise history to be named Special Teams Player of the Week.

Meet Packers punter Tim Masthay

Green Bay's punter Tim Mashtay was not needed on their last visit to the Georgia Dome. (Associated Press)
FLOWERY BRANCH — This Tim Masthay guy has the cushiest job in the NFL.
He’s the punter for the Green Bay Packers. On their last visit here, the fans at the Georgia Dome didn’t get to witness any of his work so I thought I’d at least post a picture of him.
He only had to punt once in last week’s 49-23 rout of Denver.
This season, he has 14 punts for a 40.3 yard average.
Seems like a nice kid. Some of the SEC folks will remember him from Kentucky. Here’s his bio.
But if special teams are going to be a factor on Sunday, the Falcons must force Mashtay into action and fix some of their own issues.

The Falcons have struggled on special teams, both in the kicking and coverage areas, through four games this season. With rookie punter/kickoff man Matt Bosher, the Falcons are last in the NFL in punt average at …
