Random Athlete Of The Day- Michael Sweetney

The 2003 NBA Draft is arguably the best lottery the league has seen, of course it wouldn’t be complete without Michael Sweetney. The power forward was born in Washington, D.C. and dominated at Oxon Hill and then went on to play at Georgetown. Right off the bat as a freshman, Sweetney averaged nearly 13 ppg leading them to a Sweet Sixteen loss against Maryland (Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje was also in his frontcourt). As a sophomore Sweetney shot a career high 56.7%, and finished with 19 ppg in a disappointing season with no bid for the Big Dance. The next season the big fella averaged 22.8 ppg, 10.4 rpg, and 3.2 bpg completely owning the paint.
After his junior season Sweetney ranked 7th on Georgetown’s career scoring leaders, fifth in career rebounds, and sixth in career blocks.

With Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade not falling to the number 9 spot, Michael Sweetney was selected by the New York Knicks.
Playing in just 42 games, Sweetney only averaged 4.3 ppg...

Sweetney been blowing up

You remember former NBA player Michael Sweetney right? Of course you do and I am sure the first thing that pops in your mind is his game, right?
Yeah I didn't think so.
What usually came to mind was his battle with the bulge and based on the photos below (h/t washingtonpost.com), it would seem he absolutely lost the battle.
Sweetney is currently playing in Puerto Rico (yes he is actually running up and down the court) and from the looks of it, it would seem he is thoroughly enjoying the Puerto Rican dish Pernil (pork shoulder).

Oustanding job there Sweetney! I take it you scoff in the face of diabetes and the grim reaper. How you manage to run up and down the court is certainly one of the greatest wonders of the world.
This definitely should be a warning to heavier set ball players in the league. Yes I am looking at you Eddy Curry.

Michael Sweetney One Wind Sprint From Returning To NBA

Been wondering what former Georgetown legend Michael Sweetney is up to? He’s actually alive & playing in the Puerto Rican league. That’s his current photo (left) and Sweets in 2010 (right). As you can see, he’s been cutting weight. He’s listed at 288 pounds. Of course that’s generous. This guy actually averaged 15 ppg & 25 minutes played per game in 2011. Does your NBA team need a big body down the stretch? Sweets is all ears. (via @JohnnyNBA)

Will Iverson join McCants, Diogu and Sweetney in Puerto Rico this season?

Not many years ago the debate was Allen Iverson’s future basketball Hall of Fame credentials based on his outstanding career with the Philadelphia 76ers that included NBA MVP honors in 2001 and 11 trips to the NBA All-Star game throughout his storied career.
Now the talk is, will Iverson join the likes of Rashard McCants, Ike Diogu and Michael Sweetney to play in Puerto Rico this season?
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Iverson and Puerto Rico’s professional basketball league are in discussions about Iverson playing in the 10-team “Baloncesto Superior Nacional” league, which begins its 30-game season in March.
The report goes on to say the BSN and Iverson’s representatives – namely Gary Moore – are attempting to arrange a trip to the islands that would hopefully sell the iconic point guard on the idea of using Puerto Rico has a spring board during his desired NBA comeback plan.
Iverson may not have any other choice.

Celtics waive Jamal Sampson, more cuts to come

Preseason, we hardly knew you.
With three days to go before the season opener in New York, the Celtics began the process of trimming their roster down. The first casualty was camp invitee Jamal Sampson, who saw the floor for only the final two minutes of last night's preseason finale. That leaves Boston with 16 bodies and 15 open roster spots. However, the Celtics are only looking to carry 14 players on the roster so that they could add a free agent during the season. That means two of the three remaining camp invitees—Gilbert Brown, Greg Stiemsma and Michael Sweetney—won't be with the club on Christmas Day. I'd be floored if Stiemsma (aka The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread) wasn't on the opening day roster. Out of all of the invitees, he has been the most impressive and looked the most natural on the floor. He hasn't done anything eye-popping or mind-blowing, but he's simply doing his job and that's the kind of player Doc Rivers is looking to have o...

Finalizing the Celtics roster

The preseason concluded yesterday with a win over the Raptors but now the hard part comes for the coaching staff and management. Deciding on the final roster spots, to complete a 15 man roster, is always a difficult decision to make. Only 12 players get to dress for games, but teams can carry up to 15 players. Typically teams opt to send players to the Developmental League (D-League) to get playing time opposed to sitting every game, usually sending young players.
We know who is guaranteed to make this roster, so I won’t dive into those players who will not be seeing a red tag in their locker (Major League reference). I want to take a look at the fringe players, hoping to make the cut and dawn a Celtics jersey for the up coming season.
The Celtics will have to make a decision on whether Avery Bradley or E’Twaun Moore will get to dress game by game. Only able to dress 12, these two youngings will battle it out throughout the season. Granted, if any injuries arise, I expect bot...

Comments From the Other Side - Raptors 12/21

Raptors fans are always good for a lot of comments. It seems most of them are set on having a terrible season and getting a top pick in the draft. But, they have plenty to do during games other than cheering for their team. They spend a lot of time whining about the refs and about Mike and Tommy. I think my favorite comment was this one: "Yeah, it seems to me that they just got a couple of random guys off the street. They sound like they work at the steel plant, and lack any real knowledge of basketball." I think someone lacks knowledge of basketball and it's not Tommy, who has 10 rings to prove just the opposite. I hope you enjoy today's comments from the other side!

I will be very happy if Bargnani elbows Garnett in the face and gets suspended for a couple of games to start the season. Would set the tone real nice.

Chalk up another loss.

Celtics Invite 3 More Players to Camp

The Celtics have already announced their intention to invite Pitt's Gilbert Brown to camp. Brown went undrafted but Danny called him right after the draft to let him know that the Celtics were still very interested in him and that he had a good chance to make the team. Brown is a defensive specialist whose offensive game needs some work.

In addition to Brown, the Celtics have also extended invitations to centers Michael Sweetney, Greg Stiemsma and Jamal Sampson. With just 6 players signed going into camp and half of those up for grabs in trades, Danny may just be trying to amass enough bodies for a practice.

You may remember Michael Sweetney from summer league and training camp two years ago. He was invited to attend training camp in 2009 but was waived before the season. The 6'8 center out of Georgetown was selected by the New York Knicks with the 9th overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft but his NBA career has been sidetracked by injuries and constant weight issues....

Celtics bringing Sweetney back to camp again

SB Nation is reporting that Michael Sweetney, Jamal Sampson and Greg Stiemsma have been invited to Celtics training camp.
This is the second go-round with Sweetney. He was a camp invitee back in 2009. I believe he spent the last few years playing in China.
Sampson is a 6-11 big who has played for 5 NBA teams. He spent the last two years in the Philippines and China. Greg Stiemsma is another 6-11 journeyman. You can follow him on Twitter.
