Spurs' assistant Brown wants to be a head coach

After almost 11 years on the Spurs’ bench, coaching alongside Gregg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs’ assistant coach Brett Brown says he’s ready to lead his own NBA team.

Brown got a taste of what it’s like to be in charge this past summer when he was the head coach of the Australian men’s basketball team at the London Olympics.

Brown has gathered a wealth of experience over his years as an assistant with the Spurs, but he says nothing compares to being the lead dog.

"The excitement of running your own program again and being a head coach again was exciting because of the responsibility," said Brown. "You live a little bit quicker life. Things are a little bit more significant in your own eyes because you're the person responsible."

As if Brown’s resume isn’t enough, he also has a raving endorsement from Coach Pop, who says Brown’s time as the Australian head coach was even beneficial for the Spurs.

 "The experience that he got...

Spurs' Brown hopes Olympics leads to NBA job

Brett Brown has been on the San Antonio bench for 12 years now, coaching under Gregg Popovich during a run of organizational stability that is rare in this day and age, and perhaps one of the biggest reasons the Spurs have been able to sustain such a high level of success over the last decade and a half.

Chris Finch has been more of a nomad, bouncing from gig to gig on a journey that took him to England, Germany, Belgium and the NBA's developmental league before he landed a job as an assistant on Kevin McHale's staff with the Houston Rockets last year.

The two American coaches got a chance to step out of the considerable shadows cast by their famous head coaches last summer and lead international teams on the biggest of stages at the London Olympics. Brown was the head coach for Team Australia, where he spent 17 years coaching before joining the Spurs. Finch led Team Great Britain and helped raise the sport's profile in the soccer-mad region.

Both were able to bring back strategies and informat

Report: Spurs' Brett Brown steps down Boomers coach

San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, Brett Brown, has stepped down as head coach for Australia's men's basketball head coach according to the Brisbane Times.

Brown, citing he can no longer commit to another four years as head coach, guided the Boomers to the 2012 London games where the team would eventually lose to Team USA in the tournament. It was a successful run in the Olympic tournament considering the team was without star Andrew Bogut.

"I inherited a strong Boomer culture moulded by many committed, outstanding coaches and players that have come before me," Brown said in a statement.

"My staff and I are confident that the current program is well placed to again be brought forward."

"I leave with fond memories of a group of players who played with a spirit and toughness that earned the respect of the global basketball fraternity."

"I am proud to have been their coach."

Brett Brown says he expects Mills to have bigger role with Spurs

After falling to the United States and being ousted from the 2012 London Olympics, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown, also head coach of Australia, caught up with Ross Lewis of the Western Australian after the game on Wednesday and discussed why he thinks his star Australian guard Patty Mills will have a bigger impact in San Antonio with the Spurs this coming season.
“I think he is and more importantly I think Pop (Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich) thinks he is (ready for bigger role),” Brown said.
“When you watch him grab a game and have 39 points (against Great Britain) when we’re down 15 against the host nation about to bumped out of the tournament (it’s impressive).
Brown also spoke of some of the off-season preparation Mills put in, in order to have such a good Olympic run.
“His level of commitment is tremendous. He dropped weight. He wasn't overweight to begin with but his skin folds and fitness level went to a higher level. We thought it would increase his ...

Spurs' Brett Brown: Patty Mills earned right to make shots

Heading into the 2012 Olympic Games, Team Australia were not a complete team and were facing the fact they will have to play without center Andrew Bogut. Without Bogut, Australia would be depending on San Antonio Spurs' Patty Mills to guide the team in Olympic play and according to head coach and Spurs assistant coach, Brett Brown, Mills earned the right to be the leader due to his hard work on the court.
Leading up to the London Games, Brown and Mills worked endlessly in the gym and Brown says Mills earned the right to make shots.
'People just wouldn't believe what he did with me in San Antonio the three months prior to coming to Australia and getting started again,' Brown said.
'We shot together a lot, more than I have with any other player and I've been lucky to be around some good players over my years.
'He's earned the right to make shots - he's come into this whole program thinner than he's ever been, his fitness is at a world-...

Spurs' Brett Brown likes Spain's chances vs. Team U.S.A.

Australian head coach and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, Brett Brown, knows first hand how good Team Spain can be in these Olympic Games. His team, along with Spurs' Patty Mills, faced Spain in pool play and lost 82-70 behind great defense from Spain.
And while the American squad is the hands-down favorite, many feel the Spanish team could hand the U.S. a loss including Brown.
"You step back and look at the depth of their roster, the history of the program, the age of their players. They are ripe to, in my opinion, have a legitimate chance of knocking the United States off."
Indeed Spain does have a shot at defeating the U.S.
They have the size with Pau and Marc Gasol, and Serge Ibaka. They have quick guards such as Jose Calderon and a solid supporting cast which includes Rudy Fernandez. This team has the chemistry, Olympic experience and the drive to not only capture Olympic gold, but prove Team U.S.A. isn't invisible as many point out. But while the U....

The Rundown: Spain’s defense suffocates Mills, Australia

San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills and assistant coach Brett Brown were back in Olympic action on Tuesday as Australia faced Spain, but facing Spain wasn’t any easier than facing Brazil for the Aussies.
Pau Gasol (20 points) and Spain played suffocating defense for two quarters that led to a 82-70 victory for the Spanish in Group B play. Gasol received help from Rudy Fernandez (17 points), his brother Marc Gasol (12 points) and other members of the Spanish national team.
Joe Ingles (12 points), Mills (11 points) and Matthew Dellavedova (9 points) did what they could to help Australia, but in the end Spain’s defense was just too much. Here’s the rundown.
First Quarter: Australia 19, Spain 14
Player of the quarter (AUS): Dellavedova/Team defense – Though his scoring (2 points) wasn’t a major factor, Dellavedova kept the Australians poised and productive by running the offense after Mills got into early foul trouble and was sent to the bench.
France fall to Australian Boomers at buzzer

The Australian Boomers have finished up their warm-up games for the London Olympics with a tight victory over powerful France, in Strasbourg. After the Aussies led 40-30 at half-time the French staged a comeback in the second half, culminating in a game that could have gone either way in the final minute.

After leading throughout most of the game, behind the strong play of Joe Ingles (16 points, 5 assists), Patty Mills (13 points) and powerful Aron Baynes (11 points, 10 rebounds), the Boomers saw their lead pulled back via Nando De Colo and Nicolas Batum, both of whom hit big threes down the stretch.

In fact, a De Colo three saw France draw even at 67-all with just over a minute remaining, putting the home team in a favourable position with a parochial crowd. Not to be contained was Baynes, who had shown off his brusing physique all game -- he put in a layup inside the last minute which game the Aussies a 69-67 lead.

Spain and Australia battle out in pre-Olympic duels

This week has seen two strong battles between Gold medal challengers Spain and medal hopefuls Australia, in Olympic warmup action. The Boomers travelled to Spain earlier this week, firstly to take on the host country in Granada on Tuesday, followed by a return match on Wednesday evening in Malaga. Whilst Spain came out trumps in both matches, 75-69 and 81-75, there was plenty for Australian head coach Brett Brown to be pleased about in his Boomers squad.

Not only did Australia lead throughout significant stretches of both games, but they pushed one of the world's top countries to their limits in front of parochial, sold-out southern Spanish crowds. That type of experience, leading into the Olympics is invaluable. It is also the type of warm-up match which has been hard for Australia to secure in the lead-in to some previous Olympic and World Championship tournaments.

After Game 1, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brown had mixed feelings:

Will the Australian Boomers survive Andrew Bogut's injury?

The Australian Boomers had the news confirmed yesterday that they dreaded was coming: star centre Andrew Bogut will undergo surgery and be unavailable for the 2012 London Olympics. The big man's ankle, which has been recovering from an injury sustained during the NBA season, whilst he was with the Milwaukee Bucks (he has since been traded to the Golden State Warriors), has not healed as quickly as hoped.
Bogut's ankle requires arthroscopic surgery. That will rule him out of recovering in time for the Olympics -- this is the second major tournament in a row where bad luck has beset Bogut, after he was unable to play for the Boomers in the 2010 World Championships of Basketball in Turkey.
The tough news really bites for Boomers head coach Brett Brown, as it means that he is yet to coach Bogut during his run as head coach of the Australian national team. On the other end of the table, Bogut has always declared himself as fully dedicated to the national team and intensely pr...

Video: Mills ready for Spurs’ system

Picking up a player this late in the season to help with the playoffs seems kind of pointless. No matter how talented, you can’t just stick a guy on the court, point him to the hoop and say “go!”
Luckily, the San Antonio Spurs know what they’re doing. When they signed Australian point guard Patrick Mills, they got someone who could fit right in. One of the Spurs’ assistant coaches, Brett Brown, is also the head coach of the Australian national basketball team. He’s familiar with Mills and his abilities, and their relationship also probably helped Mills get acquainted with the team (via woai.com).
There will be a lot of upside if Mills can get fully integrated with the system before the playoffs start in less than a month. The Spurs need the depth at point guard immediately with the sudden retirement of T.J. Ford.
We haven’t seen much from Mills yet, but once he gets to the point where he can put in solid backup minutes, he’s going to be a huge part of the any success the Spurs ha...

Patty Mills to join San Antonio Spurs

Word is, Patty Mills is about to join Australian Boomers coach Brett Brown, with the San Antonio Spurs. There has long been speculation that this would be a good situation for Patty to walk into, with Spurs Assistant Coach Brown there as mentor.
In addition to the Brown connection, Patty joins a line of famous Aussie guards in Spurs colours, namely Andrew Gaze and current Sydney Kings interim coach, Shane Heal. Mills has a similar game to Spurs starting point guard, Tony Parker -- encompassing speed and scoring ability.
More on the machinations at BlazersEdge.
