Storm Aftermath: Jamie McBain

It's about that time of the year where we will look back at the season that was for the Hurricanes by taking a look at the individual performance of each player. Last season I did this by showing how effective each player was at controlling scoring chances but I'm going to take a different route this time. Scoring chances are very important, but they're just part of an even bigger picture, so we're going to dig a little deeper with our player analysis this season. We're going to be looking at how they were used and how they performed in all three zones. This means looking at their ice time, special teams usage, quality of competition, zone starts and their performance by scoring chances, puck-possession, scoring chances and point-production. We want to be thorough as possible with this analysis so that everything is covered, so we're going to be looking at basically everything I've tracked along with data that is available on sites such as Behind The Net...

Explaining Jamie McBain's recent struggles

After going most of the season without a collective scapegoat, Hurricanes fans seemed to have found one in defenseman Jamie McBain. The entire team is struggling right now, but he has been taking a lot of heat from the fans ever since Carolina went on their brutal losing streak. The hate reached a new high after his brutal showing against the Winnipeg Jets two weeks ago where he was on-ice for two goals against, one of which he put in his own net. Most of the criticism he has been taking lately has been deserved since his mistakes are costing the team a lot more right now and he has the tendency to get caught in no-man's land more than others. He has also been on-ice for seven even strength goals in his last nine games after being on-ice for only seven in his first 20.

Like I said earlier, the entire team is struggling right now but McBain seems to be a step behind the entire team right now for whatever reason. Some say that he has never been good, but it wasn't too long...

Report: Carolina Defenseman Jamie McBain’s Name Coming Up in Trade Market

There’s a surprising name who has reportedly surfaced on the NHL trade market, and teams looking for help on the blue line are probably pretty interested.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Monday via Twitter that Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jamie McBain is starting to come up in trade discussions. Nothing appears imminent at this point, but according to Dreger, the Canes are open to trade offers.
McBain could be a strong option for teams looking to add a defenseman. He’s only 25 years old, and he still has another season left on his contract following this season. He would come with a salary cap hit of $1.8 million per year, according to CapGeek.com.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound McBain is averaging a little more than 19 minutes of ice time per game this season. That includes 1:37 of power-play ice time per game as well. McBain has 1-5-6 totals and is a plus-9 in 26 games for Carolina this season.

Carolina Hurricanes Jamie McBain scores on his own goal against Jets (Video)

Before taking the ice, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jamie McBain probably should have taken the day off since he ended up making a pretty memorable NHL blooper.

The Hurricanes took on the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night and as McBain was trying to clear the puck to other side of the ice, he swung at the puck and missed.

That miss caused Jamie's backswing to send the the puck backwards past Hurricane goaltender Cam Ward:

The Jets won the game by the score of 4-1 and well, McBain's swing and a miss will live on...

McBain scores on his own net with backswing

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jame McBain had some very bad luck against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night. He went to clear the puck after Joni Pitkanen broke up Jets’ forward Evander Kane’s passing attempt. McBain fanned on the first clearing attempt and then when he brought his stick back for a second attempt he fired it right past his own goalie. The goal ended up being the last one scored during the Hurricanes 4-1 loss.
Carolina's Jamie McBain accidentally scores on his own net

The good news: Jamie McBain scored a goal in his team's 4-1 defeat against Winnipeg. The bad news: Jamie McBain's goal went into his own net.

As McBain desperately tried to clear the puck from the front of his net, he swung at the puck, missed it, and knocked the puck into his own net when he brought his stick back to the ice. It's safe to say that Evander Kane, the player that was credited with the goal, might not ever score an easier goal in his NHL career.

There are accidents in hockey and then there are great, big blunders like this one. It's safe to say McBain was either trying to knock the puck into the corner or right his stick so he could wrist the puck out of the zone, but the end result was a shot on his own net that caught goaltender Justin Peters by surprise.

Have you ever seen someone try to shoot a puck that's never picked up a hockey stick before? Most times you'll see them whiff when trying to strike the puck, only to bring the stick...

Hurricanes D Jamie McBain whiffs on clearing attempt, scores on own net (video)

During the team’s sixth-straight loss courtesy of dropping Tuesday night’s tilt against the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 4-1, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jamie McBain suffered an epic whiff for the ages.
When trying to clear the puck out of the defensive zone, McBain whiffed horribly, missing the puck. As his stick returned to to the ice, he inadvertently propelled the puck backwards, past goalie Justin Peters, off a post and into his own net.
Blurg.

Ouch. I guess you could refer to McBain’s unfortunate play as McBain IV: The Fatal Discharge. You know, if you wanted to go with the easy reference to the last name Jamie McBain shares with the action hero in the film series starring Ranier Wolfcastle on The Simpsons. Which I do. And did.

Video: Jamie McBain scores unfortunate own goal

Tuesday night, the Winnipeg Jets sent the Carolina Hurricanes to their sixth consecutive defeat. They did so by effectively outscoring Carolina by a tally of 4-1. But one of those goals credit to the Jets came courtesy of Hurricanes defenseman Jamie McBain. The incident occurred as McBain was trying to clear the puck after Winnipeg forward Evander Kane forced a pass into the goal area. However, McBain completely missed, and knocked the puck backwards into his own net when he brought his stick back. The same thing happened to the slumping Hurricanes last Thursday when Jordan Staal fired a shot into an empty net against New Jersey.Rough week for Carolina.

Jamie McBain goes to Finland

Another Hurricanes player will be taking his talents to Europe as it was announced yesterday that defenseman Jamie McBain has signed with the Lahti Pelicans of Finland's SM-Liiga. McBain will not be in Finland for too long, though as he said that he only plays to stay there about a week to play in a few games in order to stay fresh for the upcoming season, whenever that happens. It seems that McBain is a bit more optimistic that the NHL season will begin relatively soon since he isn't planning to stay in Finland for an extended period of time, but that's probably more of a gut feeling than anything.
The Lahti Pelicans (or just Pelicans as they are referred to) are currently the third lowest ranked team in the SM-Liiga with a record of 7-9-0, and do not appear to have much NHL talent playing on their squad right now. The only regular NHL-er on their roster right now is San Jose Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi and the rest of their roster either consists of guys who were mo...

Hurricanes Top 25 Under 25: #5 Jamie McBain

There isn't much to say about Jamie McBain that hasn't already been gone over because he was the focal point of a lot of discussion among Carolina fans this year. He started off the year as a healthy scratch but he quickly made his way back into the lineup and the injury to Joni Pitkanen along with the eventual trade of Tomas Kaberle opened up a lot of new doors for him. As a result, Carolina fans got to see McBain at his best and at his worst plenty of times this season so there were a lot of different opinions of him going around.
You aren't going to find many people saying that McBain is an emerging star, but a good amount of Carolina fans see him as a key part of the Carolina defense corps since he has regularly played big minutes in his young NHL career. On the other side of the coin, you have people who see McBain as a defensive liability and a player who constantly makes them want to throw objects at their television sets because he always seemed to be involved i...

Hurricanes, McBain agree on extension

There was little question that the Hurricanes needed to keep defenseman Jamie McBain in the fold or risk losing the investment of playing time they've given him during a developmental stage.

McBain's continued growth on the ice will be one of the telltale signs during the coming season.

The Hurricanes and McBain, who had been a restricted free agent, agreed on a contract that will pay him 1.7 million next season and 1.9 million in 2013-14.

The Hurricanes like McBain's puck-moving ability, though at times finding him the right defensive partner has been an issue. But if the Hurricanes are going to run the type of system that they prefer, they need the kind of skill set that McBain can provide along the blueline. His work on power plays is among his strongest assets as five of his eight goals during the past season came on power plays.

At age 24, he could be part of the future core of the organization. He has completed three full professional seasons.

The signing of McBain for two seasons giv

McBain's extension the perfect pact for both sides

This afternoon, the Carolina Hurricanes re-signed promising defenseman Jamie McBain to a two-year extension. The contract is worth 3.6 million and will carry a cap hit of $1.8 million. Not only is the deal appropriately priced for both sides moving forward, but it also protects all parties involved.McBain made his NHL debut in style, bursting on the scene after a successful year in the AHL. Through 14 games, he scored three goals and 10 points. At that time, the Hurricanes were finishing up a dreadful 35-27-10 season but their late-season surge provided a silver lining for the fan base. McBain, as a former standout with the University of Wisconsin, looked like a building block for the future. But despite his early success, McBain's career trajectory wouldn't be without growing pains. With a full roster, the defenseman was challenged by legitimate NHL players which stalled some of that hefty production. Over the next two seasons, he would score an above average 15 goals and ...

Carolina Hurricanes D Jamie McBain signs two-year contract extension

The Carolina Hurricanes are staying afloat of all things defensively in their early offseason by signing defenseman Jamie McBain to a two-year, $3.6-million contract extension.
A prevalent part of the ‘Canes blue line, the 24-year-old led his team’s D-men in the 2011-12 season with 27 points in 76 games with eight goals and 19 assists. He also led with five power-play goals.
The press statement from the Hurricanes expresses the franchise’s satisfaction with his puck-moving abilities while being able to contribute offensively.
Ultimately, this is what the ‘Canes need to do to be able to try to get back in the hunt next season. With his cap hit of $850,000 of this past season, and going into a contract expiration, the Hurricanes are showing where they see the strengths in the team. While the need is great for blue line help for Carolina, they’ve shown they don’t buy into any high-priced name. Trading Tomas Kaberle to the Montreal Canadiens was a good indicator of that.
