John Jaeckel: Paradis Deal/What To Expect

Follow me @jaeckel

The Hawks made the "minorest" of minor deals yesterday, shipping Philippe Paradis, a player they did not intend to re-sign, to Tampa for a college defenseman named Kirill Gotovets.

Belarussian Gotovets is a small, puck-moving defenseman (sound familiar?) whose game is based on passing and positional play. In all likelihood, he will never play in the UC, but you never kn...

Chicago Swaps Prospects with Tampa Bay

The Chicago Blackhawks have traded Rockford IceHogs forward Philippe Paradis to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Cornell University defenseman Kirill Gotovets.

Gotovets was a 7th round draft pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and is currently playing at Cornell University. In 22 games this season Gotovets, has not registered any points. Over a span of three years, Kirill has appeared in 80 games for Cornell, scoring two goals and adding 13 assists.

At this point in Gotovets career it doesn't look too bright. He is added to a Blackhawks prospect crop that includes 16 other defenseman. Chances are, he ends up at the bottom of that list considering he is a 5' 10" proclaimed offensive defenseman who has dried up this season in terms of production at the NCAA level. The Blackhawks had to make this move because they were flirting with the 50 contract limit (they were at 50) before this trade so perhaps there is more to come at the deadline where they plan on adding another piece t...

Boy, that escalated quickly. The Grand Rapids Griffins beat the Rockford Ice Hogs 11-6 last night, which set the franchise record for most goals scored in a game. This was nothing compared to the unbelievable bench-clearing brawl that occurred during the second period. The Grand Rapids Griffins are the Detroit Red Wings minor-league affiliate, and the Rockford Ice Hogs are the Chicago Blackhawks minor-league affiliate. It appears as though the NHL rivalry momentarily spilled over into the AHL.This brawl was sparked when Griffins forward Riley Sheahan and Rockford forward Kyle Beach squared off at center ice. Prior to their fight, the last five penalties had been called against Rockford, and the score was 6-3 in favor of Grand Rapids; needless to say the Ice Hogs were frustrated. Before you knew it, everyone else on the ice had squared off, and then Rockford’s goalie Carter Hutton went flying down the ice to take on Griffins goalie Petr Mrazek. The Griffins players then spilled of...

Admirals Give Up Early Lead, Shut Down By Rockford

From the Milwaukee Admirals:
ADMIRALS STIFLED BY ICEHOGS
Ads Score Early, Held in Check Remainder of Game
The Milwaukee Admirals got on the board less than three minutes into the game, but were stifled by Rockford goalie Carter Hutton the rest of the way as they dropped a 3-1 decision to the IceHogs Wednesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
The win pushed Hutton’s career record against Milwaukee to 10-2 and came on his 27th birthday.
The early goal for the Ads came from Juuso Puustinen, who scored just 2:51 into the game when he collected the rebound of a Cam Reid shot and beat Hutton. Jani Lajunen also picked up an assist on the play.
Rockford tied it up at the 5:54 mark when Brandon Pirri scored from the top of the crease for his eighth of the season.
Andrew Shaw put the Hogs up 2-1 with the eventual game winner at 8:51 of the first period. Philippe Paradis held the puck in the right corner and sent a tape-to-tape pass to a crashing Shaw, who chipped the puck over the blocker of Ads netminder Magn

Jim Rutherford and drafting

Earlier this week, it was announced that Philippe Paradis was being assigned to the ECHL by the Chicago Blackhawks/Rockford Ice Hogs. You may remember that Paradis was the Hurricanes first round pick from the 2009 NHL Draft and was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs later on in the year in exchange for Jiri Tlusty. Seeing how Tlusty has emerged as a top-six player and is currently playing well overseas while Paradis has struggled at just about every professional level, I think most would agree that the Hurricanes won this deal by a landslide. This did get me thinking about what kind of shape the Hurricanes prospect pool would be in had they kept Paradis and how Rutherford and the Canes scouting staff has had a lot of tough luck when it comes to drafting during their tenure.
Would you believe that since the year 2000, there have been only eight draft picks by the Hurricanes who went onto play 100 or more games for the team? Would you also believe that behind Eric Staal, Niclas Wallin...

Hurricanes Top 25 Under 25: #9 Jiri Tlusty

It is weird to think about what this list would look like if it was made starting last season. Had I done that, there is a good chance that players like Zach Boychuk would be in the Top 10 while Jiri Tlusty would be towards the bottom of the list. It's a year later now and while Boychuk has still yet to make his mark in the NHL, Tlusty did just that last season with a 17-goal, 36-point breakout campaign. Tlusty was primarily a fourth liner and AHL tweener before last season, so the expectations for him are usually pretty low, but one thing that's often forgotten about him is that he is still pretty young and has been slowly improving over the last few years.
It may seem like Tlusty is older because he's been in the league for awhile but he only turned 24 in March and seems to have finally solidified himself as an NHL-er now. Unfortunately, he will likely be seen as a "draft bust" by the larger media because of his draft slot and the Leafs possibly rushing him ...

Jiri Tlusty's breakout season

When Jim Rutherford traded Philippe Paradis for Jiri Tlusty back in 2009, not that much was made of it. Tlusty was known as one of the many "busts" of the Toronto Maple Leafs during the John Ferguson Jr. Era and it didn't look like he would be more than a fringe-NHL player. Fast forward to 2012 and Tlusty is on-pace for a career high 17 goals and has shown some of his first-round skill at times. What a lot of people are wondering is if Tlusty is finally coming to his own or if this year is a complete fluke. As of right now, things are still unclear.
It is easy to forget that Tlusty is only 23 and isn't near the prime of his career, so this season could be him continuing to progress as a player but he's been given a lot more opportunities to succeed this year than he has in the past. Tlusty's always had offensive talent but he's never been given a chance to show it during his tenure with Carolina. Before this year, he was usually put on the fourth lin...
