Capitals Acquire Genoway, Deschamps

Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee made a couple of minor league transactions yesterday. First, he acquired defenseman Chay Genoway from the Minnesota Wild for a 7th round draft pick. Genoway is a left-handed offensive defenseman who has posted 4 goals and 19 points in 53 games for the AHL Houston Aeros this season. Genoway, 27, appeared in 1 NHL game last season with the Minnesota Wild, but he spent most of his first professional season with the Aeros, posting 7 goals and 36 points in 72 games.

The Morden, Manitoba, native will ply his trade with the Hershey Bears for the rest of the season, but has a cap-friendly 2-way NHL contract that runs through the end of next season should the Caps need to call him up. Genoway is McPhee-sized at 5’9, 177, and McPhee brained, as he was WCHA student-athlete of the year and 1st team all-star as a senior at North Dakota in 2010-11. He also follows in the footsteps on Alexander Semin: he doesn’t fight often...

Justin Schultz Expected To Become A UFA: Burke Calling?

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has already acquired two of the prospects that he drafted while serving as the GM of the Anaheim Ducks in defenseman Jake Gardiner and centre Nicolas Deschamps, now it appears as if Burke will make every effort to sign another former Burke draft choice in defensive prospect Justin Schultz.
TSN’s Bob McKenzie is reporting that Schultz has officially de-registered from the University Of Wisconsin, which should make the highly regarded Schultz an unrestricted free agent in time for the NHL Entry Draft in June, although he wouldn’t be able to sign an NHL contract until July 1st.
Schultz was Jake Gardiner’s defensive partner at the University of Wisconsin where they enjoyed good chemistry both on and off the ice.
While nothing has been confirmed, there are rumors circulating that Gardiner and Schultz would like to play together at the NHL level, which has led to plenty of speculation that Schultz ears will be wide open should Burke call wit...

Marlies beat Bulldogs 7-2 in AHL outdoor game

Greg Scott scored twice to help the Toronto Marlies beat the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday in the American Hockey League's Outdoor Classic.

A crowd of 20,565 attended the game in sunny, 25-degree conditions at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

''It was great fun to watch our guys be so excited before the game,'' Marlies coach Dallas Eakins said. ''They were like little kids, amped up. And then when they saw that the place was full, they were really excited.''

Nicolas Deschamps, Mike Zigomanis, Drew Paris, Marcel Mueller and Joe Colborne also scored, and Ben Scrivens made 19 saves for the Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs' farm team. Dany Masse and Louis Leblanc scored for Hamilton, the Montreal Canadiens' affiliate.

Brian Burke Deals Luca Caputi To Ducks

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has pulled the trigger on another deal with the Anaheim Ducks. This time Burke has sent Luca Caputi to Anaheim for former second round (35th overall) pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Nicolas Deschamps.
Injuries and a lack of fit with the Maple Leafs organization have conspired to deflate whatever opportunities he might have had with the Maple Leafs of late. Known as a gritty player with some marginal scoring punch, Caputi has been a victim of the Maple Leafs strong depth at the AHL level, forcing him to watch countless players get their shot with the big club while he continued to tough it out with the Marlies.
Truth be told, Caputi has been out of the loop for quite some time, having last played for the big club for a total of seven games in 2010-11. In 35 career NHL games Caputi scored three goals to go along with six assists for a total of nine points.
In Deschamps, Burke gets himself another big body centre (Deschamps stands at 6’...

Ducks acquire Luca Caputi for Nicolas Deschamps

ANAHEIM, Calif. The Anaheim Ducks announced Tuesday that the club has acquired left wing Luca Caputi from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for left wing Nicolas Deschamps.

Caputi, 23 (10188), has appeared in 21 contests for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season, collecting 2-1=3 points with 10 penalty minutes (PIM). The 6-3, 200-pound winger split time with the Maple Leafs and Marlies in 2010-11, appearing in seven NHL contests with the Leafs, going scoreless with four PIM. In addition, Caputi collected 1-4=5 points with 30 PIM in 13 games with the Marlies in 2010-11.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Caputi made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008-09 and scored his first career NHL goal Feb. 3, 2009 at Montreal (Carey Price). Caputi appeared in a career-high 23 NHL contests with Pittsburgh and Toronto in 2009-10, scoring 2-6=8 points with 12 PIM. He was acquired by Toronto from Pittsburgh with Martin Skoula in exchange for Alexi Ponikarovsky on Mar. 2, 2010.
