Odds & Ends: Padres, Orioles, Coste, Nationals

Here's a few links to help you through another baseball-less night...

ESPN's Keith Law says that firing VP of scouting and player development Grady Fuson was a good move by new GM Jed Hoyer and the Padres. He notes that San Diego's drafts have been among the worst in the game over the last few years, although they did change course last year.
Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun says the Orioles need a power hitter at one of the corner infield spots, and mentions...

Always a Phillie

A few of the good guys from last year's championship team aren't in red pinstripes today, and they weren't in the Phils clubhouse for the champagne showers. One of them is Chris Coste, who as we all know suited up for the Astros in this series and had a great view of his former teammates celebrating their third straight division title. Although he's not on the roster right now, he still earned a piece of that title, and we're fortunate that his great baseball story reached...

The Smallest Violin Plays for Chris Coste

Chris Coste had it pretty good in Philadelphia. He was freakishly old for a rookie, which gave him plenty of fodder — and a title — for a book that became relatively popular. He’s been contacted about turning his life story into a movie in the vein of Vince Papale. For a catcher with a [...]

Roy Oswalt Beats The Diamondbacks 1-0 On A 4 Hitter

Roy-O pitched to Chris Coste, who, in my opinion, is a MUCH better receiver than either Pudge or Q - very soft hands. He threws a TON of curveballs and that curve was most definitely working just FINE tonight - only one ball was well hit all night.
Lance Berkman set the club record for first baseman assists with (by my count) 9. And both Kepp and Miggy made really dumb errors, which caused Roy to have to throw 8 extra pitches.
Good thing that Roy (and Hawkins and Valverde) pitched as well as ...

The Coste of Doing Business?

The Cubs placed catcher Geovany on the 15-day DL today with an oblique strain, retroactive to last Tuesday. Soto suffered the inujury taking batting prractice before Tuesday's game at Wrigley Field.

It appears that Soto's injury is worse than orginialy thought, and he could be out until some time in August. And with the way oblique strains can affect hitting, he might not be back even then.

I can't say this for sure, but I think it's fairly likely that the Cubs put in a waiver claim on catcher Chris Coste, who was put on waivers by the Phillies on Wednesday. That's why no corresponding roster move was made when Soto was placed on the DL today. The Cubs expected/hoped to acquire Coste off waivers. Unfortunately for the Cubs, Coste was also claimed by the Houston Astros, and because the Astros have a worse record than the Cubs, they would win a waiver claim.

Which puts the Cubs back to Square One...

They can either bring up a catcher from Iowa (probably Chris Robinson), or try and make a trade for a veteran catcher, which might take a while to execute.

Report: Chris Coste designated for assignment

The 36-year-old catcher will write a new chapter in his long and storied career, which will begin in earnest with the Houston Astros, according to a report. In four seasons with the Phillies, the veteran catcher hit .282/.339/.440 with 23 homers, making a name for himself as a 33-year-old rookie who defied the odds and exceeded expectations by becoming a solid option for the Phils behind the plate. Recently, his chances had diminished with the addition of veteran catch-and-throw backstop...

Not sure what this means for Humberton Quintero, but the Astros have picked up catcher Chris Coste. I think Coste was a player that Ed Wade dug up when he was at Philadelphia.

Chris Coste released, claimed by Astros

The writing was on the wall. Chris Coste had to know that the Phillies, who were keeping three catchers on their roster for some inexplicable reason, were eventually going to get rid of him. Coste hadn't started a game since June 27th and was relegated to pinch hitting duty, getting only two at-bats so far in July. He had to know that, sooner or later, he was going to be on his way out the door. And that day has come. To make room for the return of Raul Ibanez, Coste was designated for as...
